Looking for ideas of a tranquil yet sultry bedroom

We are building a home and after seven years of having babies in our bedroom, our bedroom will become a space reserved for just dh and me.

I am looking for inspiration ideas of a room that is relaxing, peaceful and restful, yet conveys romance.

We are starting with new furniture; a clean slate.

Have you looked at any of the Barbara Barry designed rooms. You can find some ideas on the Baker Furniture website. She is one of their designer furniture lines. Her rooms are classic and timeless. Not necessarily traditional more transitional.

Have you ever thought of using a poster bed with bed curtains?

I don't know how large your room is but I think a pretty sofa or comfy chair w/ottoman is charming and tranquil.

When you say you are starting with NEW FURNITURE, do you mean NEW to you or brand new? By that I mean are you using vintage/antique furniture or bedroom furniture bought out of a new furniture store?

This may be a dumb question but are matelasse covers heavy? I was looking at some of those too but I never even heard that name before I came to the forum. I really don't know what I'm doing as far as trying to layer a bed. You can see the bedroom going in and out of the main bathroom so I'd like to get this room looking decent. My goal is to have all the rooms in order so the doors can stay open. lol Tina - Thanks for the suggestion. Deep down I knew the vellux wasn't probably very desirable all by itself. You're right about the solid cover and patterned folded down. I do like how people combine different fabrics but I don't really know what else would look right with it. Also don't know if that would really be for me, iykwim. I did a search for the pick stitch and I like how it looks. I'm thinking either the white or sandalwood would be best. I'm leaning towards white but would that end up being too stark? You're saying you'd also get the pick stitck shams? Do you sleep on those type of pillow cases? They're just for pretty right? whenicit, Thanks, but I need LOTS of help! The other advantage to the 2nd layout in BR1 is that the headboard is rather high and if I put it along the wall, it won't block the windows which would probably be better. I'll see about adding seating when I get the beds assembled. We may have room and it would give me a project to scour antique shops. That is what I'm planning on doing for a nightstand in the second bedroom. A little shabby/chic, beachy. I was going to look through some "Real Simple" magazines for inspiration. I'm not sure exactly what I want yet, but I though a "weathered" table, perhaps in a fun color, would go nicely with the iron bed. ajsmama, Thank you for the suggestion on BR1. I agree that swaping the nightstand is much better. On BR2, I think I could move the dresser closer to the door. The only think I actually don't like about the dresser in that position in general is that I'm not fond of the look of it from the side, but no mater how far forward or backward it is, I'm going to have that problem... I'd space them out. I have those in my family room and prefer them spaced apart. Mine are 3-4" and if I weren't too lazy at the moment, I'd walk upstairs and measure...lol.

Are these bunks your own college kids will sleep in when they are home for vacations, or overflow for their visiting friends? My son is a college freshman and has brought a couple of friends home for a weekend when there was a concert here they wanted to see. Something like that would have been useful...but I certainly don’t expect to be entertaining crowds of young adults so often I would need to designate a bedroom as a bunk room. In fact, I don’t even think those guys slept in our guest room or even the floor of my son’s room, they all just crashed on the playroom floor, lol! And those top bunks are so close to the ceiling! Gives me claustrophobic anxiety just looking at them! :) Of course, if your home is at the beach all bets are off and you probably WILL be hosting tons of kids all the time, If you go with this, I think you are left with the bottom right corner for the bunks as you certainly don’t want to block that large window. You could make the closet smaller (which just sounds so WRONG to even type...who makes a closet smaller? :) ) but I don’t think you have to if you use that configuration. I would definitely do some amazing window treatments with gorgeous fabric bc that will be you focal point when you walk in. If you need an alcove for a tall dresser, you can reduce the size of the closet, and put the dresser in the bottom left. I’d leave the closet in the top left so as to keep the window centered on the wall. Hope this makes sense!

newdawn: We have an iron bed and nothing else. We are open to new or used furniture, whichever will help give us the feeling we are after. I really like the chair and ottoman idea and we will have space for one.

We went with a rather large closet(large for us!) so that we can keep bedroom furniture and clutter to a minimum. We would rather have our closet in a chaotic state than our bedroom....LOL!

I just had to chuckle, I thought you better be careful though with the sultry part or there might be more babies back in that room someday!

I think a lot of Candice Olson's bedrooms might fit this style. Very clean lines, a little sparkle, nice lighting.

Newdawn-I wanted a poster bed with bed curtains. I thought that would be the most wonderful escapist indulgence. DH said absolutely no way. So we ended up with the bedroom furniture he liked best and the living room/dining furniture I liked best. You win some, you lose some, but on a cold winter night, I still wish I had those bed curtains.
