What dining table shape do I need?

Here is our floor plan. At the moment I have a 48 inch round glass and wrought iron table with 4 chairs in my Formal Dining room but I just don't like it and would like to go with something a little more formal looking. Obviously I can't go very big but I'd like to seat 6 people. Any thoughts?

I did some mockups and you could do either. Round would allow for a bit more room. However, it depends on the size of chairs you are wanting. Let me know and I can do a mockup for you.

An oval might be nice and it looks like you'd have room to expand it into the great room should you need to serve more people.

geokid, I forgot about Young House Love's kitchen...I've seen theirs before. It looks great. I'm afraid their kitchen is bigger than mine though. wendyb, your space looks wonderful. In the pictures it doesn't look cramped at all to me. You might have more room widthwise and less room lengthwise than I do. I can see how traffic patterns could be a challenge. If we go with a rectangular table I'll probably run it lengthwise in our space. I looked around the web for a while yesterday and I came up with this photo which looks like similar space and layout to what I have. This has a round table, but I'm not sure what size it is (I think I'd be looking for somewhere in the 44-48" range). It has both chairs and barstools: I also found this one which has chairs similar to what I've ordered. Mine are the armless version though and mine have wood legs not chrome. Also, this space is quite a bit larger than mine. I definitely like the chairs with this style of table:

Ok I'm convinced to a 60" round, hopefully with drop in leafs for extra seating. I spoke with the table maker today and he's on vaca until Saturday so we'll touch base early next week and finalize plan/start the actual build. After all the recommendations I'm thinking too that I'll only purchase 6 of the chairs and use my existing wooden ones for extras. We aren't big entertainers and would mostly have just another couple to host but this will provide a slightly more cost effective solution for when we do entertain more. @maggieq & @cyn427 @jjam - thanks for the chair info! Yikes about the experience with the Hudson chairs, esp for how pricey they are! I've heard such mixed reviews about the overall quality of RH, either wonderful or awful, but I've been coveting the Martine for so long that I'm cautiously willing to give them a try... And hope at worst I could have them brought to a re-upholsterer for future modification over buying fresh set at that time. Thanks again everyone, this has been Hugely helpful! :-)

Your new buffet is quite charming in style and you will find yourself enjoying the functionality for dining & entertaining with it too. I love the mix of painted furniture with wood. Is the current table solid wood or is it finished with a wood laminate top? The dining chairs are timeless. The seat cushions are easy to care for with grandkids yet can loose their shape overtime which are easy to replace. You can mix woods but it must be done very carefully. The table and chairs do not need to be as dark as the buffet top but they do need to have those chocolate brown undertones. The photo is a little dark so it's hard to confirm the exact wood species of the buffet top to work from for color. But hopefully this design information will guide your direction. I would recommend either a solid color fabric, or a very soft, subtle pattern (almost tone on tone). The fabric on the chair seats and the chair backs already have quite a bit of detail, and the wood shutters bring in some texture as well, so I think your drapes should create a simple but elegant backdrop. My favorite look for drapes are ones that are fairly close to the wall color, (could be a tone or two lighter or darker) and that are hung from as close to the ceiling as possible, ending just above the floor (floor length, but not puddled). If you have enough room on both sides of your windows, extend the rod past the width of the windows by about 10-12", so that when the drapes are open, they can hang straight down with the inner edge just meeting the window, and not actually covering it. I personally love linen drapes, but if you want a little more bling, consider an edging like a Greek key in gold, or a silk drape that has some sheen). Double or triple the panels on each side, for a full look. Here are a few looks to consider. Going with a higher contrast drape, like a blue or green from your chair fabric or art, could look quite good too, but I'd still stick with a more solid color look. You can probably do a 54" diameter table with a leaf or two in order to accommodate guests if required, but that room shape is dictating a round table to begin with.

I agree with Beverly that the room shape calls for a round table. You could also go square with a leaf or two, to allow you to seat 6 when needed.

It does seem that round is best but I think the oval at least looks a little more formal. I'm trying to go with French country in my house so I am on the hunt for something nice and unique on Craigslist that would work but I want it to also fit the space and not just fit because of the style alone. I tend to shove a square peg in a round hole when I see something I love and want to buy and I'm trying really hard not to do that. This house is just not my style at all, super traditional looking with red brick and white trim and I'm trying to add some "me" in here and so far it hasn't worked until I came up with the French country twist. I think that could work. We shall see. Thanks for your help and LOVE the mockups!!

The oval or the round would work with your French Country look - either stained or painted.

Oval or round double pedestal and extra leafs. You could expand and have more options for comfortable seating where legs won't get in the way and the double pedestal will keep it solid for expansion.

I guess the choice would depend if the OP chose dining chairs that could fit under the table??

You think this would be too small for the space? 42x42 round or 42x60 with leaf.

If you go with a double pedestal and at least two leafÃ¢ÂÂs you will have more options. I wouldnÃ¢ÂÂt buy a single pedestal without seeing it in person with a leaf or two inserted. That way, you can lean on the ends to see if it goes wiggly wabbly.

42" round is a bit too small.

Saw this 48" round table in person and it could be a good transitional piece for your home.

Oh yes - much better! I remember having a single pedestal base a long while back and with the leaf in it was always so wobbly. I'll try and find something like that (beverly27) for sure. Thanks, you guys!
