Picture Placement

I picked up these paintings from the framer today. My original plan was to put one over each of the tables and put a mirror above the sofa. I am now thinking putting them side by side above the sofa might be better and use something smaller on either side above the tables. What do you think?

Together over sofa or separated over tables/lamps?

I think your original plan of over the lamps and a mirror over the sofa is the one. Love the paintings!

Nice paintings but the vase on the floor is telling me it wants to live at my house. LOL .................Love it :D

I have the same situation, only its in my living room, only my window may be more off center than yours. Because of that I treated both sides differently in that I put different things on both sides of the wall, but I did make them equal distance from the window and that seemed to look better. I tried identical prints on each side and it just didn't work, but I think that was due to the window being very off-center.

Oh, they're lovely! Am I reading that right -- $10 each? WOW! What a bargain! The subject matter is perfectly fine for a stairway landing - or anywhere else you want to use them, for that matter. I'm one who does not believe that we must limit ourselves to only certain subjects in certain rooms (I think that's an outdated and needlessly restrictive concept). Put them wherever they will bring you the most pleasure. Well done in purchasing them! I hope they bring you much enjoyment.

Sorry for the picture heavy page. :-). I have trouble expressing at certain times in words. So the pictures attempt to speak for me. Thank you Deborah for reminding me of creating the more soothing lines that I'd forgotten that Olychick told me about Olychick not sure if you're following this but you have helped me immeasurably. I have gone back several times over what you have said and that has been greatly appreciated and keeping me or editing. Yayagal I found this at a second hand shop. I guess it didn't suit the other person's decor or something like that. I was happy to pay the under $100 for it as it really makes me smile. Thank you for the compliment on it. 1 pink mountain thank you the compliment on my tchotchkes. I kept only my favorites when I purged many many many many things. Thanks also for your help with understanding why the smaller pieces don't work very well. When I'm up close to the fireplace I can see the pieces I love it's very hard to understand why they shouldn't be there. We are now looking for something more solid and structured but not sure what maybe some thick blue or black candle holders?

Two prints, matched over the 2 cushions in the sofa appear too repetitive in shape IMO. If you do a mirror I would recommend a metal starburst style that will add some sparkle & texture to your room, and a round shape for interest, but not actually reflect anyone's image. Having a regular mirror reflecting your image when you walk into a room is very disconcerting to many people.

I think those lamps on the side tables are too small for the scale of your furniture and your room. When you position lamps next to seating, especially for reading, the bottom of the shade should never be lower than your shoulder. These small lamps are accent lamps that can be placed on top of taller cabinets as ambient light for a room.

I would recommend some art glass lamps or ceramic base lamps that provide some color for the room and then position a pair of some type of art on either side above the lamp tables.

A simpler clean mirror would be better than that starburst thing...the paintings don't need any competition! And the current lamps are lovely, no need to change them. I hope you will show us what you decide to do, cheryleb.

Looking at the rendering ... I don't see the point of buying art and then hiding it behind some large lamps.

I also think the lamps are too small. I would buy much taller lamps and use the two paintings over the sofa. They are too big to use over the side tables. For the right scale the mirror would have to be enormous.

Perhaps you could use the two paintings over the sofa and find four of some thing smaller to stack two vertically over each end table. And taller lamps.

Thanks for the input everyone. I think the picture I provided is deceptive. The lamps are actually not small as the bottom of the shade is about 6" higher than the top of the sofa back. It is probably because the ceilings are 10' on this wall and the side tables are about 30" tall that give the illusion that the lamps are low.

I ended up putting the pictures over the sofa as they seemed a bit too large in scale for over the end tables. For reference, each canvas is about 30" square plus the frame so they would have been wider than the tables they were above and that seemed a bit off to me.

I do like the idea though of adding some width-horizontal interest to the wall. Some smaller prints that wouldn't compete with your artwork hung above the end tables would balance things a bit.

Q for Beverly, I'm seeing those starburst things Everywhere all of a sudden. And I personally think they look horrible! Just as bad as they looked in the 60's in a lot of suburban ranches. Don't you think these are a trend that are going to wear thin very quickly?

mlveaving, they have been trending for a couple of years and I'm seeing less of them being suggested here on GW, so we're heading for the downside of the trend!

I do think the starburst mirrors are a trend, but cheryleb was talking about placing the prints behind the lamps & a plain mirror over the sofa which can be a disaster when reflecting the image of people walking into a room. In addition, the room needs another shape happening. So on the spur of the moment, i reached for an easy option. I'll try to do better.
