Finish choice on crown molding and trim?

Which do you have on your crown molding and trim?eggshell, semi-gloss or satin? Are certain ones used for different styles like traditional vs contemporary?

I'm not sure if there's a right and a wrong or if one sheen is more suitable to a different style. I know that my preference is satin but a lot of people prefer to go with a semi-gloss.

the painted crowns are semigloss.
the natural wood ones are gloss.

You can attack it from a couple of different angles... If the crown is all the same, then you can consider it all "room crown", and you can then paint it all creamy white. I have seen instances where the crown is all the same and the color simply transitions to blue at the soffit-to-cabinet crown miters. Your choice. I prefer to make the two crowns different though, making the cabinet crown smaller than the room crown. With the cabinet crown minor to the more major room crown, cope the cabinet crown to butt into the room crown. Paint the room crown white and the cabinet crown blue. Much depends on the size and styles of the crowns, etc, how they meet up, how they relate, etc. But it really boils down to your personal preference. The good news? It's only paint. Easy to change if you decide to change your mind.

Ceiling, Trim & Crown Molding.. Should the color match?

We always put some sort of color on the ceilings but it's always light. In 3 rooms we used the same wall shade on the ceiling.. light gray, vanilla latte & a grayish green. I've found the vanilla latte (Glidden) is a good ceiling color and have used it in other rooms. In our dining room we used a Behr color called French Bread on the ceiling, then a custom color on the walls with a green crown molding. Our bedroom is the only room with a lighter color crown & molding but the paint is darker. I think it's a matter of preference. You have to find what works for you.

For a heavily trimmed room, I do prefer a painted wood baseboard that flows with the door/window casing and the ceiling crown. For paint-grade trim I use poplar, primed all sides, and a semi-gloss paint. Poplar mills well, holds a crisp edge, and takes paint well. My personal preference. You can do marble base, but an all marble wall-baseboard-floor can sometimes look bottom heavy. Depends on what's in the room to break it up, or the style of the room. In a modern or minimalist style, all marble might be preferable. In a more traditional room, the wood base might look better. As far as cleaning or durability, in typical residential, the wood-versus-marble base should not be an issue. Both will perform well. If you can look through inspiration photos, you'll probably be drawn to one look more than the other.

@JuneKnow it was one of the things I discussed in detail with my house plan designer to make sure we have room for 4” trim around every door and window. We are doing 10’ ceilings so lots of room up there. It sometimes feels like every question on here turns into what should have happened or negative in one way or the other. Even if I had never thought of trim before now, which I had, what I should have done is not beneficial at this point. I have my beams for my family room and coffered ceilings on the plan . I’m talking about picking out which trim exactly works with the style I’m looking for and deciding what walls to put accent molding on etc. not whether I should now add a cathedral ceiling.

I was thinking of going with the satin too. My walls will be matte. Not sure if the semi-gloss would be too shiny for me? Is satin in between eggshell and semi-gloss? Does satin still have enough shine, without being too shiny? Also my doors that will be painted the linen white to match trim and molding of course I will do same finish. But with 2 doors in the room semi-gloss or satin? Is there a big difference between the 2? Also my walls will be a dark warm color not sure if that makes a difference?

I like my doors, trim, crown, etc in semi-gloss and walls in matte. I find semi-gloss easy to clean, specially around door knobs.

when i have painted myself, i have always used semigloss on the trim...

but, we had a lot of painting done a few years ago and the painters used an oil based satin finish on the crown/trim and i love it-not shiny and has a super smooth finish and is very easy to clean...

White semi-gloss for the trim and beadboard, eggshell for the walls. The trim isn't shiny at all, and having semi-gloss makes it easier to clean.

Our painter said he always does the same as Oakleyok - semi gloss on trim and doors and eggshell/satin or flat on walls. We had him do the eggshell satin on our walls and it looks nice and the walls are not shiny just a nice sheen and the wood work is sprayed with a oil based paint and it is not shiny but has a nice feel and look to it.

I am not a fan of flat/matte wall paint but it does hide wall imperfections better. It does look nice but I don't like the feel of it to touch.
