My daughter has a studio apartment that is primarily gray, and she is using teal and purple as accents. I also like the idea of yellow.

I'm not a yellow or orange person, so turquoise or pink to go more feminine, navy or deep red to burgundy to go more masculine. I would like purple with one of the other bright colors.

How about something fun like a neon green? Or use a turquoise and hot pink or cranberry as accents.

Thanks everyone for your awesome ideas! I plan to paint the room either a pale gray or tan(which do you think is best?) The accent color that I need I will use for pillows, curtains and accessories. This will be an executive studio apartment catering to probably more men. I was thinking of using black furniture and black appliances, silver for the lamps and wall accessories but I know that gray can be a little boring if you use too much. Should I throw in a little dark brown for like the garbage cans and orbs to liven it up a bit or is that just too much?

Especially when a room is so neutral full of gray, you should think about adding wood tones and textures to keep it from being too flat and cold. You could also add metallics like chrome for a spark of jewelry in the room.

Take a look at the paint sample below. It's BM Smokey Taupe and it's a gray-tan tone which is beautiful. I like it because it's modern yet warm. I find too much gray to be chilly looking.

Pale pure grey walls (go for a highly diluted "nothing but black" paint, nothing with hints of tan or blue, with a lot of silvery metal.

And find or make some round accent pieces in intense saturated jewel tones. Rich ruby-red, intense amythest, or vivid teal ...

And work with textures: Grey and fluffy, grey and quilted, grey and coarsely woven are all going to add richness to the apartment without visual clutter.

You could also go for clear medium pastels: rose pink, "Tiffany" blue, medium violet, spring green ... make sure they are clean and not "muddy" colors.

Great advice! I love the idea of orange with these tones, that would at least warm it up a bit. Gray, black and silver can be a bit cold. I also love the idea of ruby red, that may be a better choice for a masculine feel. You guys are great! Thanks so much!! I'll send pics when it's all done.

Since it's a small space how about keeping most of the walls light and adding an accent wall with some texture looking repositionable, removable, alternative wallpaper I think this is on Modenus but may be elsewhere). That way you could keep an open feel but add interest with the walls with wallpaper and the rest with cool wall art. You could give the illusion of more space. When or if you decide on a reusable wallpaer color just add some pillows of that shade to your bed. To further that idea add some interesting lighting, some that shines up and some that shines down (mix it up) and have dimmers. Have a wall with art that has painting lights.
