Thanks, Mary Lu. It looks like yours isn't doing what I was afraid of. I was afraid the fabric would stick out too much from the door and look bad or obscure the doorknob. I'm glad I went ahead and ordered the fabric.

I don't have any pictures, but my Mom had curtains on a simple rod at the back door in our home. If you hem them just at the bottom of the window as Mary Lu did you'll have no trouble with the hem getting in the way.

You might want to put weights in the bottom hem, which would help to keep the curtain hanging straight down and prevent it from getting in the way when closing the door.

I used to have curtain on a similar door. It looked like Mary Lu's except mine had a rod at the bottom too. They were shear and it gives it a tighter look, and the curtain don't billow out every time the door opens.

Depending on the weight of the fabric you have coming, another option may be to make a rod pocket on both the top and bottom of the fabric, and either use small cafe rods screwed to the wood just above and bottom the window, OR use tension rods, which may fit within the trim of the top and bottom of the window frame itself.

I used to have that type of curtain on a window from my entry porch to my pantry, and it prevented the curtain from flapping, getting dirty etc...Sorry I don't have a picture.

It sounds as if she doesn't want the bottom rod.

Thanks, all. I really don't want the bottom rod because when I've had those, it has been difficult to open and close the curtain. I really prefer to have the view clear as much of the time as possible, as the sun is only a problem when it's in the process of setting. All the rest of the time, it makes it so much easier to see what the kids are doing in the yard, if my neighbor is home, etc., if the window is uncovered.

That's why I thought the rod with clips and rings might be ideal, so the curtain would easily slide open and closed.

The fabric is just cotton quilting fabric. I plan to line it and I may use somekind of interfacing to stiffen it. I think the idea of curtain weights is a good one, in terms of keeping any billowing to a minimum.

I also thought about using swing-arm rods top and bottom, and doing two panels that open and close like shutters, but that seems more involved and more likely that one of the kids would get poked in the eye that way...

A very simple solution is a thumbtack! Leave the hem open on the side, put a thumbtack of similar color between the folds of the hem, stretch the fabric straight down and push the tack into the wood. Voila! No billowing. Invisible. Curtain remains completely moveable. Works like a charm.

I used Velcro to stick the outer edge of each panel to my metal doors. It worked perfectly. I no longer have curtains on my doors so I don't have a picture..sorry. What I find works better than the curtains is the built in blinds that can be attached aftermarket. I LOVE them.
