I would not use that paisley with that curtain print. What color palette are you shooting for?

The color palette I'm shooting for (I think) is pretty much in the mock-up. Neutrals & colors in golds & oranges. Maybe some other spice color or the right red or even the right pink for pillows. Maybe a gray.

What do you call a color scheme where the colors are close to each other on the color wheel, an analogous scheme? That's what I'm trying for. I don't want to go color wheel opposites -- too jarring.

That is an absolutely gooooorgeous room.

I don't care for patterns on sofas, but I like to change things around too much. I love the curtains, but I don't care for the sofa fabric with it. I'm guessing, though, that the fabric, once on the sofa, will read fairly solid.

Do you need curtains to cover that great view?

I think the paisley may not read much differently than what is on there now, in that colorway.

I like mixing prints, but I'm not sure about those two--maybe they don't have enough contrast in tone? I'm sure others will chime in with advice about that....

I just wanted to say I love your wall color and that decorative chair, and those windows are terrific. It's a great place to be starting from :)

That's what the fabric store saleswoman said. And pal thinks so too (whew!). All the magazines have solid sofas w/ patterned pillows these days. I love that look, but I just think a pattern would be more practical. Plus that's my coffee & tea drinking place :)

I just used that Robert Allen fabric in charcoal to make drapes for my son's room. I love the way they turned out. I mixed it with and orange duvet, gray walls and bamboo shades. I'm currently working on a charcoal gray boxpleat bed skirt to finish the room.

I'll be honest and say I don't like the paisley you've picked for your sofa, but I like the other components. Sorry.

I like both the paisley and the curtain print, but not together. The curtain print is too modern/geometric for the paisley. But the paisley is quite beige and monotone, so I think you'd need some colorful accent pillows and more color in the curtains.

From the changes you're making, I'm guessing you're moving from formal/traditional to a bit more relaxed/transitional but what's the feel you're trying to achieve in the room?

Or a more neutral colorway of the two lower fabrics, but something with some heft.

I think the curtain fabric is also not the right color for the direction you are headed.

Off the top of my head, the curtain pattern in much more contemporary than the sofa fabric and the style of the room. Eclectic is good, but I don't see them working good together.

Yes, the contemporary/traditional clash is bugging me too. I do like the curtain color with the wall color. But haven't seen it in real life, so am not committing.

Haven't seen any other stock panels that bowl me over though. And I don't think I can afford custom, not after spending on the upholstery.

Palimpsest, I looked at the red colorway & liked it also. It had a lot of tan and some green in it too.

Here's another mash-up just for perspective. From the LR you can see the olive foyer, and I thought the paisley kinda spoke to the beige wallpaper in the DR. There are some strong colors going on already, which is why I wanted to keep the LR palette tight.

homeagain, you MADE those drapes? Wow, they look great! Sharp lookin' room too.

I think though, its taking any relationship to the wall color away. If I do the squint test, all of the finishes and fabrics are about the same value and the wall color seems to be random with it. Does that make sense?

The drapes are still not working so I would pick either the sofa upholstery or the drapery and work from there. I think I would like to see the addition of some olive hued elements in the room to provide a better flow from the other area.
I'm also not sure about the muted tones and the brighter orange color working together in this combination.

Palimpsest said it better. The wall color seems random so I would work on finding a pattern like Pal suggested in the paisley and then work from there.

Here's the palimpsest variation. Hmmmm -- some possibilities there!:

I think too one of the reasons I lean towards a yellow or gold for the drapes is those big windows are filled with green colors most of the year from the woods outside. Spring, summer, & fall I keep thinking the room needs some yellow to balance all that orange & green. Not so much in winter when the view is gray tree trunks & brown grass (then I want a pink!).

I love the dark paisley Pal picked out. You'd never see any spills on it. I have a paisley sofa and I'm a klutz, so let's just say it's worked out great. :)

I have always loved your gorgeous room. The overall effect right now looks like it needs some contrast. I think it's crying for some blue to play off that gorgeous wall color. Some blue along with some warm wood tones and crisp linens would look right at home there.

I have that Robert Allen fabric in your original curtain choice in a coordinating pattern, and it is a very unusual mustardy-brownish color. I think it's meant to go with other RA fabrics, and might end up looking like the orphan in your room.

The palette I suggested is much more specific to the wall color although I think you could change to certain green or gold toned wall colors as well as a neutralish wall color.

The issue that I have with a powerful wall color and all neutral furniture is that it seems "backwards" to me since I like the contents of the room to be more important visually than the wall color. Sure you could pull the wall color in with accessories, but that, to me, seems a weak link.

I have only skimmed others post. But I think you have fallen in love with the paisley and want to use it? Maybe recognize that and save it for somewhere else.

I would never in a million years paint a wall pumpkin, but I think it looks great. I do agree though that you have given all the visual weight to the walls and you need to restore some to the sofa. I think you need not just a saturated palette there, but a print.

mtnrdredux: That paisley is one of those head vs. heart things: heart's saying oooohh! & head's saying "meh...but it IS 50,000 Wyzenbeek rubs, it'll wear like iron!" It could look either frumpy or fresh, depending on what else is done in the room :( When I get back, I'll take another look at the red colorway per pal, zoecat's fabrics, & something with olive in it ala htnspz's idea.

jjam, I do have some blue things in the room. Just small touches because blue & that orange are so vibrant together the room practically shakes.

deeinohio, mustardy brown is better since the wall orange is a burnt orange. Clear yellows don't work.

WOW~~your room has great bones!! IMO, because of the room's size, I would do something more dramatic, rather than 'play-it-down' w/the neutrals you posted. I love the brighter colorway, especially the paisley! ;o)

Beautiful room. The wall color is not a color I would have chosen, but it works well in your space. I don't like the paisley fabric, but I think the fabric for the drapes works really well.

Instead of a pattern, I'd consider a neutral grey sofa for your space and bring in some patterns/color via pillows that you can change out if you tire of them. I'm seeing grey to balance out the abundance of warm/orange tones in the room. (homeagain, I love your grey/orange combo - well done on the room!) A couple ideas:

Having a neutral transitional sofa will tie the elements of the room together and pillows and a throw can provide unexpected color.

This goes against one of the GW orthodoxies of choosing a palette, but the GW method is based upon indecision or a lack of commitment.

If you do all neutral fabrics and finishes with a powerful wall color. It's not really a color scheme. Adding accessories in the wall color may tie it together, but since the wall color and the related accessories Both could be Anything--it's not a scheme.

If you want to be able to do a color switch with accessories and accents, fine, but the strongest way to have this scheme is a tied-together palette including the wall color, since that will make the room hang together. All neutral may be a bit dull (not necessarily) but thats where the colored accents can come in.

Say you don't want to commit to the red/orange paisley for fear of not wanting to commit to the wall color...Well:

These may not be exactly right but even in the limited Farrow and Ball palette, I pulled Eight various shades that could work with that sofa as a wall color.

One review at Ballard said that the color of this print IRL is much darker than monitor shows. Would something like this be a curtain possibility, if the color is truly deeper?
I could see it with spice colors scattered about the room, and one block of olive. The cream/taupe paisley just doesn't have the oomph that the other rooms have, as I recall.

I agree that the drapery panel that you posted doesn't quite go with the sofa fabric. But I'm wondering what initially attracted you to the crate & barrel drapes... Are you trying to incorporate more contemporary/transitional elements into the room? Or was it the color? If you want to bring more contemporary elements in, then I'd suggest a textured solid or stripes for the sofa instead of the paisley, & a contemporary patterned drape (I don't like the color contrast of the crate & barrel pair with yoru wall color, but )and removing the skirt from the sofa when you have it reupholstered (assuming that's what you plan to do with the fabric, vs. buying an entirely new sofa). The darker paisley is lovely, but very traditional, and seems like it would be hard to coordinate with a contemporary drapery pattern.

Alternatively, if you love this particular paisley, how about having a darker textured sofa (maybe the darkest color in the paisley which looks almost brown) and then using the paisley for accent pillows? I agree with Palimpsest that the dark color of the walls would work better with a deeper colored sofa.

I would do a solid for the curtains and possibly coordinate the pillows for the couch with them (not match, but be along the same family). If you pulled the one of the lighter tones from the paisley, I think that would work really well.
I'd also make sure you have a pillow or 2 in a similar color to the wall (which I do see echoed in your rug).
If you don't need privacy/insulation for the windows, I'd consider sticking with white sheers (or off white if that is the trim color). Your views are great!

Awm, do you remember Parma, who used to post here? She ordered a medallion/suzani print linen from Ballard for her office in her house. It had all the colors you need, in the right distribution. Did you ever see it? I cannot find it on the Ballard website, but it may be in the catalog.
