help with stairwell lighting

I have no decorating sense and could use some help with my choice of stairwell lighting. I have a 3-level townhome with a center stairwell. the home is nothing fancy, but I have redone my kitchen and baths in a simple/modern design with granite, stainless appliances and brushed nickel faucets. the rest of the house is basic white.

the current stairwell lights are builder's gold lantern style with one 60 watt bulb in each. one semi-flush at the front entrance and one hanging two feet from the top floor ceiling. (the other stairwell landings have recessed lights)

What is the current style for stairwell lights? I don't want anything as large as a chandelier. I would like something simple but classy, with 100 watts of light. is that a good amount of light?

my kitchen ceiling light is this style and I like the simple style.

would something in this style be good for the semi-flush at the door? the entranceway is 3'x6', so I don't need much light.

does anyone use flush mount lights like these any more? they seem very institutional to me. http://www.kichler.com/consumer/products/detail/7003NI

and then what type would I hang from the top floor? would a pendant work like this?

any advise would be very welcome!

thanks.
