Are these fruit trees planted far enough from each other?
Comments (3)Thanks guys for making me feel better! If I had a lot of property, I would have them all over and not worry about how close they are, but since I do not, I wanted to try and get a 4th tree in the same area, so in order to do that, I had to plant the cherry closer to the plumcot. I am sure it would take several years for them even to come close to each other, but when they do, I guess I can just prune them so they do not touch. Right now, I have fruit trees in the ground and containers since the ground is not diggable in certain places. So using the containers for those places lets me have more trees. The ones I have in containers ( a few dwarf apples, another pie cherry, a 2 in 1 sweet cherry, a peach , all dwarfs) I have in 21-24" containers. I hope they are big enough as a final container size. Anyway, back to the subject, I want to maybe put another pie cherry next to the cherry already planted, and will probably have to be 6 feet or so away like the others. Thanks again for easing my worried nature! Christy...See MoreHow far is too far for vacation home?
Comments (34)We seriously considered purchasing a home about an hour and a half away, in good weather. In the winter, it could take hours and hours. An old historical home in the high country at 6100 ft elevation. In the end we decided it was much cheaper to rent the cabin for a week a year, buy investment property closer with a positive cash flow year round. Of course, this is California and NOTHING is cheap. An extra $1600. a month house payment just didn't make sense. But we were tempted until we learned the house has been for sale for three years. LOL. We'd have to keep it permanently on the market if we ever hoped to sell it again. So much for those high country Gold Rush towns in the Sierras that we love so much. Also, once you own a property, those vacation weekends quickly turn into work weekends. We decided to keep it as a vacation spot....See Morehow far is too far?
Comments (15)Well, urine itself is sterile, but what comes in contact with on the way out is not necessarily. This is a close-to-verbatim quote from one of our vets. They wanted to do a catheter draw on one of our boys and I asked why I couldn't just bring a sample. I doubt it would be harmful - like QQ noted Bear G drank his own (and I'd bet after days in the while to resort to that...not entirely sterile once its in the jug)... Oh, and if you get stung by a jellyfish that is tried and true to reduce to pain and stinging. But if it is not NECESSARY to come in contact with... well, the cat didn't have a choice, did he? Not cool in my book....See MoreHow far is too far for Peachtree cross pollination?
Comments (5)Most trees that require cross fertilization - peaches do not - don't even need to be in the same garden!! It is more related to the distance the pollinating insects, usually bees, will travel to find pollen. And that can be an extended distance.....as much as a quarter mile!! If you live in a fairly urban area, it is often not necessary to plant pollination partners for apples and pears (and sometimes cherries) as there are often suitable trees growing nearby. In more rural areas or on larger properties, if the trees are planted within 100' of each other, cross pollination should be adequate. The short answer is that the trees do not need to be immediately adjacent to each other but just within a reasonable distance for the bees to travel....See MoreHappyladi
