Are these fruit trees planted far enough from each other?

Hello everyone!

In the one part of my yard, I have 3 fruit trees, all DWARF sized, planted side by side in a row together.

I have a

Dwarf 2 in 1 Plum

Dwarf Plumcot

a Dwarf Surecrop Pie Cherry

The first is the Plum, then about 10 feet away is the Plumcot which is in the middle. However, the Cherry, which is last, is only about 6 1/2 feet away from the Plumcot. IS that too close for them? I know the Cherry is on the smaller dwarf size because it is also considered as a good tree to plant in a container.

The cherry has nothing next to it on the other side. So do you think being only 6 1/2 feet away from the plumcot would be ok? How close have any of you ever planted 2 drawfs together? I know it is probably better that they were about 8 feet apart, but do you think the 1 1/2 ft difference will really hurt anything?

Christy: Don't sweat your spacing. Some of us have similar trees closer, some much closer. If you summer prune they won't interfere with each other. Even if you don't prune much they will still bear about the same as at a farther spacing. So pruning regularly in summer is the key.

Scott has hundreds of fruit trees of all kinds planted about 3 ft apart. I have many at 6ft by 8ft. I'm currently planting at 2ft by 8ft and plan to go closer.

I'm experimenting with planting even closer than that. I've got 3 low chill cherries planted in a 4 foot diameter hole. I also got 4 Mexican avocados planted in about the same space, so we'll see how they all do in the next several years. I've got other trees planted between 5 and 8 feet distance from each other too and they are doing fine.

Judith: Peaches are self fertile so plant it wherever you like, preferably in a sunny location with well drained soil. Just for consideration of tree size and pruning, 15-20 ft apart if you have lots of room. But they can be closer if you are short on space. The Fruitnut

It's true. The fruit will be of variable quality and the seeds won't be true to type they will be hybrids. If you are going to plant self pollinating use only self pollinating of the same hybrid type. If you aren't using self pollinating then you will need different types to cross pollinate. In this case, people usually pick a type of persimmon because they like it's taste and so a similar tasting persimmon that ripens earlier or later than your favorite as the cross pollinator makes sense. In my case I was recommended, if I remember right, a Yates or a Prok, by this nursery: http://www.nolinnursery.com/Persimon.htm He is a Ag graduate from UK with many years of experience. So if I was like you I and wanted two trees I'd buy 2 Yates or 2 Proks. You should buy 1 or 2 or the same variety if they are self pollinating. I'm only buying one so I don't have that problem. I have a Black Gum (aka Black Tupelo) in my yard already and it's you've seen one you know they are closely related to persimmons. I'm not sure it they can 'cross pollinate' persimmons like donkeys & horse can cross breed though. Really. I understand trying to do things 'on the cheap' - believe me, I'm tight. But you don't want to do seedling fruits of these species. Seedling apples/pears will eventually become very big trees, unless you're prepared to do constant, diligent pruning - fine if you've got unlimited space, but the typical residential yard can't really accomodate more than one standard apple, and you'll be waiting 10, 12, 20 years for them to grow through their juvenile period before you ever find out if the fruits they will produce are tasty enough to eat. You'll be far better off choosing grafted specimens of varieties you like on a rootstock suitable for your site. A grafted/budded selection will bear fruit in less than half the time you'd be waiting for your seedling to begin fruiting - and you'll know what the fruits will be like beforehand. Pomegranates are easy to grow from seed, but typically, most seedling pomegranates do not produce top quality fruit. Better to purchase named-variety selections, propagated from cuttings. Most poms are zone 8(maybe 7) hardy - zone 6 is gonna be real iffy - but you might well succeed with some of the Russian selections, like Kazake and Salavatski. Cherries - I dunno. Hard to beat a budded/grafted variety like Montmorency, though I've seen some seedlings of that one that were pretty close, in fruit quality, to the original.

Need more details before realiable answers could be formed, What cultivar of Cherry tree are you planting? Which root stock is the featured cherry tree grafted onto? What is your USDA temperate zone? I am wondering if your location must be quite mild or even more often cold than moderate if your Sunset zone is only a 2 or 3. Is this an ornamental cherry tree, or a fruiting variety. If not ornamental, you might get more reliable answers if you post your question on the fruit trees forum.

Thanks guys for making me feel better! If I had a lot of property, I would have them all over and not worry about how close they are, but since I do not, I wanted to try and get a 4th tree in the same area, so in order to do that, I had to plant the cherry closer to the plumcot.

I am sure it would take several years for them even to come close to each other, but when they do, I guess I can just prune them so they do not touch.

Right now, I have fruit trees in the ground and containers since the ground is not diggable in certain places. So using the containers for those places lets me have more trees. The ones I have in containers ( a few dwarf apples, another pie cherry, a 2 in 1 sweet cherry, a peach , all dwarfs) I have in 21-24" containers. I hope they are big enough as a final container size.

Anyway, back to the subject, I want to maybe put another pie cherry next to the cherry already planted, and will probably have to be 6 feet or so away like the others.
