How about a tall flowerpot w/ a piece of glass or wood for a top? If you can't find a glazed one in the color you want, the terra cotta or plastic ones are easy to paint. The home "box" stores carry small dimension table tops already made w/ routed edges.

Or how about one of those glazed ceramic oriental garden seats? I've always wanted to find one of those to use as a side table in my sunroom.

I'll be honest, I am not seeing the barrel in that room.

What about using a metal plant stand, and adding a round platter or tray on top of it? I did that in my LR, and it works perfectly as a small side table in a tight spot. If not a tray, a round framed mirror would be cool, too.

syllabus, thank you for the idea. I thought about the ceramic pot - but I have one on the other side of the room with the manzanita branches in it and wanted something different beside the chair.

I also thought about one of those concrete pedestals that are used as plant stands or table bases, but I don't want anything that overhangs the edges too much because I am afraid my cats may jump up there and knock the top off. Most pedastals I have seen are tall and rather tippy. The slate has some variation in surface so furniture placement can be tricky.

What about one of these - they are a little wider than a plant stand, but not overpowering? Of course, these are from an expensive furniture store and I am hoping to find one in a consignment shop. I did find an Ikea round plant stand out of wood and another from Bombay out of wood - but have been looking for something with the four legs. I can also find lots of little square tables, but none that are round - I am sure something will turn up.

Oooo, I didn't think about all those legs - good point patricia43. I think that was why I originally thought of the barrel as it was a filled in shape for that space. But perhaps a barrel is too informal.

What about the vase then - perhaps one a little darker and more shapely - first is the one I have for the manzanita across the room? Second is one from ebay but is too small, but I like the shape better. I like the color of the last three quite a bit - they are from Italy of course - no way I'll find them anywhere, but perhaps something similar. Seeing their color makes me think I should have a darker accent in the room as a whole - decorating seems to be never ending with me. I think I will be darkening the chair a bit though anyway, but will wait till I get something for beside it.

I think you can go to the home centers like Home Depot and buy concrete column forms. They are round tubes of a heavy cardboard like material. If you can get your hands on one of those and get a piece the height you need, then prime and paint it or decoupage with cool paper. Add a tray on top and you are done.

You might also consider a round wicker hamper. Paint it black, fill it with some rocks to make it stable. You could add a tray top, or just use the hamper top.

Or, consider getting a couple of the large terracotta pots that hold the big plants, put the first one upside down, stack the other on top of it right side up. Use some good adhesive to put them together if you want them more stable. Paint them espresso, highlight the rims with pewter paint or rub-n-buff. Add a tray on top or inset a terracotta saucer painted to match. Right where the two pots meet, it might be cool to wrap a band about 4 inches wide of silver armature wire that you can get from a craft store.

You should be able to find those pots and saucers at a garden center or home store.

What do you want to use the table for? A lamp for reading or just a place to set a glass or a book on? What is the feel of the room? The drapes & pillow look a little formal. Do you want a casual or formal feel to the corner?

Have you considered....
Finding a great basket for a base & adding a wood or glass top. The texture of a basket would compliment the cane.
A small covered ottoman. Easy to make any size or shape.
Take a collection of "coffee table" books & stack & add a glass top to as protection.
If you like the garden route-- how about a birdbath w/ a glass top added. Don't laugh at that idea 'cause I've done it!

les917, thanks for the ideas. I'm familiar with sona tubes for concrete columns, I actually have a couple of the tubes left over from when I redid the post anchors in my barn last summer. But the sona tubes are smooth surfaced and I was hoping for something a little more curvy or textured. Saw a wicker stool/pedastal at World Market last week, but wasn't sure about it's shape in the space. I will have to purchase a few items and see how they look in the space by taking some photos - I seem to do better choosing by taking the photos and placing them next to one another and cogitating on them a while to see how they "fit" in. I will have to check at the nurseries and improvement centers to see what I can find in ceramic pots.

syllabus, I would consider a bird bath - even the pedestal, because those pedestals are often fluted or more ornate than just a smooth surfaced tube. I am, however, looking for something round or oval rather than square, so the books and such won't work for that - the rest of the room has so many squared lines I am looking to soften it a bit in there. I will definitely be checking out he birdbaths though - because I had neglected to look at them previously.

Maybe a small skirted table?

That's a great idea to do a skirted table if you have lovely fabric for a round cloth that makes your area wonderful. Another thing about round leg tables with cloths, you can hide all kinds of things underneath them. Don't ask me how I know that. :)

mango wood stool

Not sure I would do a skirted table in your room. I think it is the wrong feel for the space. And if you sit a skirted table by the blue, very traditional chair, I think it will create a corner that looks out of sync with the rest of the room.

The table near the chair will be used for a drink and as an accent for that space.

mareda, small skirted tables are a great idea, but I don't think I would like that look in this room. Below is a photo of the whole room (as it was a couple of weeks ago - but chair is moved back to the left side of window rather than the right). The room is more contemporary with only this side chair as an accent. I feel skirted tables fit better in more traditional rooms, although the ability to add some different colored fabric and softness is beneficial in lots of circumstances and as patricia43 said - you can hide lots of stuff.

les917, thank you so much for the link, you always have such good ones. I do like the shape of the mango table, but am now thinking something with a bit of color - rather than more brown in the room - I feel the wood would be lost on the slate floor. The mango table has a similar sheen to the one I was mentioning I saw at World Market the other day. It was a barrel shape but is made out of wood, was smooth, and opened up with a small lid on top but is flat so a drink could be placed.

Last night I had a vision (I see I am becoming obsessed with decorating when I have visions at night - uh oh - the bug has bitten) about getting a inexpensive pottery vase and covering it with mosaic glass - I was thinking of the amber glass that came out of my front window - see photo below - I had told a stained glass artist she could have it - but another no show for a free item. Perhaps make the whole thing with amber glass but add in an occasional blue tile or contrasting piece of glass. Maybe cut the glass in long strips so it doesn't look so busy - I am thinking out loud here. Below is a drawing I drew quickly to explain what I am thinking of.

Can you picture the long strips in the gold and the little black squares in an irridescent blue glass - what do you think? (I know a lot of work). I am going to a studio today to sign up for a glass jewel box class and I will ask them if this is feasible.

I just have to find a form to adhere the glass to. Plywood would do and I could make a wooden top so stuff could be stored in it. I could build it an octagon shape so it wouldn't be square. I would change the top so I could put a top on it or a small platter as les suggested earlier. Now I just need about 40 hours in each day to do this.

Does anyone understand what I am trying to explain? What do you think?

Mosaic Form Mockup and Amber Glass

I never saw the photo, but see you're right that a skirted table just wouldn't work at all. As much as I try to keep up, I miss a lot because work just gets in my way. I hate that! ;-)

mareda, the photo was in another post, so you probably wouldn't have seen it. Your idea was actually a very good one - just not something I wanted for this room. Someone else might have decided differently depending upon their taste in decor.

I wanted you to see what I got today at a consignment shop, though. I couldn't wait to actually make something with the glass, because who knows how long that would take me. So I purchased the bottom half of a bird bath and will paint it to blend a little more and will add a top of a tray to something. I couldn't resist showing it - in all its rough and "as found" glory. DH said - what in the heck is that? He thinks there is too much in the room - but the room is actually kind of bare - perhaps it is small accessories and maybe I need to accent with larger ones.

Anyway here it is - it is solid concrete and really heavy - and thanks to syllabus for her idea to look at these:

I need a top about 16 or 18 inches in diameter for my bird bath pedastal. Pier I and World Market have round chargers and metal serving dishes, but won't go there till next week.

I do have these two non-fired ceramic bowls that are about 16 inches in diameter and low like a bird bath shape. I was going to mosaic the inside of the bowl as a decorative piece, but then I thought I could use one of the bowls for the top of the bird bath. Then I would need a piece of glass for over the top of it to make it flat. Here is a photo of the plain ceramic bowl and the sea glass pieces and glass baubles I wanted to use to mosaic the inside. I also have some aqua tile I can cut up I saw at HD the other day and bought a few (39 cents each). For the bottom of the bowl (underneath - to keep more smooth) I would put silver leaf or gold leaf (fake not real - like cigarette or gum wrappers decopauged). Then I would put clear glass over the top of the bowl and afix it all to the top of the pedastal.

Actually, to show you what I mean, I just found this bowl on the internet and having the bottom mosaiced looks kind of nice too. See last photo.

I am going to do all this in all my free time ! HA ! - What do you think?

Springville: great find! I really like your idea to mosiac the bowl & add a glass top... but think about this...

At Lowes/Home Depot you can buy stain quality round & square table tops to finish off as you desire. They aren't expensive & have nice routed edges. A hole drilled into the center of one of these would fit over the "plug" of the stand. Or you could use a smaller drilled block of wood over the plug & attach the table top to that. I can see you doing a mosiac on the wood top & then attaching that to the stand. I'm thinking that the bowl w/ a glass top added to that might make it too tall to be used by the chair.

I love the thought of your making such a unique piece for your home!

syllabus - thanks for your advice. You and I are thinking along the same lines. I already thought the table would be too high if I used the bowl and the design in the bowl would be wasted if I covered it with glass.

Today I happened to be at HD and got a 18 inch diameter round piece of wood that I plan to mosaic. I also picked up some little glass mosaic tiles at HD that were in stock which I will develop into a design. We shall see how this all turns out. Will keep you all psoted.
