Leather sofas and pillows that stay up?

How do you get pillows/throws to stay up on leather sofas? I'm having the hardest time getting them to stay up. They always end up flat on the seat. I need the pillows to bring in color to my cream colored sofa. There was a thread on a similar topic maybe a year back but I can't seem to find it. It said something about attaching a grip to the back of the pillows..Anyone remember?

Any other ideas?

You can get down pillows, which will sit in place because they are squishy rather than stiff like foam pillows. I remember the other thread, and I believe people suggested attaching a piece of rubber shelf liner or something like that to keep them from skidding.

If you can roll that pillow up under your neck and be comfortable while lying on the sofa, it's (1) too stiff, (2) hard looking against leather, (3) won't remain in place.

Thank you all so much for the advice and information. I think you're right that I really need to sit down and think about this purchase more, rather than just jumping in feet first because of the "good deal". It sounds like if I like it enough to be the largest thing in the space, it will work with what I have and it will be a great quality piece. But, if I find myself doing this for the deal, then maybe I should reconsider and look elsewhere. Thank you, my3dogs for the pictures of the H&M September sofa in a darker color. I have to say, I'm liking the style a lot more seeing it in the darker color. Though I do still have similar concerns about the "heaviness" of the sofa. Wow, runninginplace, that's a really lovely sofa. I thought Thomasville was on par cost-wise with H&M. Maybe I need to do more searching locally to see exactly what is available and what I can find on sale. That's a great point about the fact that I'm considering the "life" of the sofa in my house.

I think the idea of any Brown, or any Taupe being a Neutral and that it will go with anything is something that will date current decorating trends. Genuine leather (just like granite) was Out of fashion for some time because of the popularity of synthetics during the mid-century period. My parents had a custom suede sofa that aged very poorly (it was brown and ended up with bluish black shiny wear marks on it) --the company paid to recover it, and offered black leather, and my parents picked black Naugahyde for it's bullet-proof ness. (Still in their house). Leather has become much cheaper, because the ways of processing leather all the way to processing the Dermis to look like the hide by coating it and painting it, and embossing it --has made "Leather" accessible at all price points (although the Bycast leather process I described can't be called "leather" in some countries). So the big, *relatively inexpensive "leather" sofa may be something that says early 2000s, as well as the "neutral" color of the sofa, being shoehorned into a room full of other colors.

I was going to suggest down insert pillows as well. No problems with the pillows on both of our leather sectionals. The two oblong decorative pillows on our bedroom bench (slick-coated leather) kept sliding when I tried to sit them upright. But I "plumped" the down filling in them until they stayed put, and no problems since.

Thanks les and patricia! patricia, i presume u meant "if u can't roll"..
I will have to try the down pillows. I'm going crazy constantly rearranging the throw and the pillows. I should try the shelf liner trick too.
My problem with the squishy pillows is that they lose their puffed up look too soon. I'm not sure the ones I tried before were down filled.

Yes, down pillows. They work well on leather.

I have pillows that are covered with faux leather. Looks like leather, but has a nappy surface, almost like suede. They seem to "stick" to my leather sofa pretty well. I would guess that suede or faux suede would work even better. I think I got my pillows at JC Penney, probably in early 2005.

If you don't want the whole pillow covered in suede, perhaps you could make covers that are mostly fabric but have a suede stripe, to help hold the pillow in place.

I really had never thought about this. It's never been an issue for me. I have leather and I just had to go in and check. Our pillows are down. Sometimes I wish they weren't so squishy but more firm, but I guess that's one reason they stay on the sofa. Also they're an Ultra Suede with a bit of a nap so maybe that helps too.

I have the same problem. It doesn't bother my husband at all, but I am straighening the pillows a lot.

Thanks for pointing out the Suede option- uxorial and mush. As for the down, is it better to go for the highest down/feather ratio? I'm worried that 100% down while softer might not retain the shape in a few months. I guess i should just get a few and try it out. thanks everyone.

I don't know what quality feathers or down my needlepoint pillows are, but I never have a problem with them and some I have had for years and some were given to me by people who had owned them for a while and yet they all seem to keep their form very well.
