PIC Olive green plaid fabric/floral area rug/ baybronze olive pa

I found a plaid fabric which seems to compliment the fireplace and furniture.

The area rug was for the entryway but I think I like it over the carpet in front of the fireplace.What do you think of this rug? Can I use a colorful print picture on the wall and it won't fight with the rug?? It doesn't have to be this rug, I just brought it home last night for the nuts of it. There was a contemporary style I also liked, but I prefer flowers.Can I put the contemporary one in the entyway if the colors flow?? The rugs will be about 5 ft from each other. I'm considering painting all the walls bay bronze, and making side panels. We are considering bookshelves? how high should we build them?? to the ceiling? Paint them off white trim color?? Portable or built-in??

I think I'd like an arch on them.

I now moved the rug to the tiled entryway for fear of being one of the 25 Decorating Mistakes,carpet on top of carpet!!
Think I'll roll it back up and wait for your opinions, TIA..

Well, I was going to say I really like the rug, but I didn't know about the carpet on carpet decorating mistake :)

Southernfrenchie - Thank you! Very pretty space and those curtains look wonderful with that paint! I finally went to Lowes yesterday and grabbed paint cards of: LA Russet 6 LA Summer Pudding Waverly Tomato Red Waverly Cinnabar Eddie Bauer Crimson Glidden Terra Cotta Rose. I grabbed a few actual samples from comparing my BM paint cards and going by what I knew of the colors. Ha, when I got home I realized I grabbed such similar colors it's not even funny. Waverly Tomato Red looks like BM Burnt Peanut Red and similar to Raspberry Truffle. Glidden Terra Cotta Rose looks like the color name and is similar to BM Tucson Red. The color would work but it's not how I'm picturing the room. LA Russet 6 is a nice color. Similar to Currant Red. The other names above, the cards look very similar to ones I already have. I'm finally at my point of walking away for now. In the end I'll probably end up going with MR or CR. And just for giggles.. MR top, LA Russet 6 middle, CR bottom.

I think if you use the pink striped fabric, you're going to need to add more pattern-likely floral. At a minimum add tassels! I'd paint that settee a soothing aqua color and try to find some different floral fabrics. I've been gathering things for my DD's wedding, and I've found that the linens section of Goodwill has been a life saver-so has the evening gown section. I'm doing a boho/morrocan theme-also richly layered but in very vibrant colors. Fabrics for what I've been looking for run an average of $20/yd, so I had a brainstorm. I've been finding sequined skirts & dresses, prom dresses in satins & organzas-for next to nothing. For one very large pillow, I found a tiny (maybe size 0) dress that slid right over the pillow so I'll just have to stitch up the end and top-for $3. Anyway, that is where you need to hunt for fabrics to decorate with. Clothing is always cheap at yard sales and thrift stores. I'd really start with the settee and drapes before moving on to the hutch. Get the feel for the room. You need to add more fabrics and patterns-I'm afraid that pink stripe on it's own is WAAAAY too 80's shabby chic for the look you're going for. Mixed with other prints, it'll be fine.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! Between your responses & the 'Show Me Something Ugly' thread I'm having some great feel good moments! Usually I'm not a cottage type of person but this seems to be just the right amount of it for me. I do tend to lean more towards a masculine, dark, den-like interior but this is a really nice change for the warm season. I can't believe how much lighter the rm. feels. DH even commented on it. Kim & Teacats - I could get absolutely lost in that artwork. Remember when you were a kid & you could stare at a painting forever weaving a story in your head about being in the picture? That's how I felt looking through them. Parma - Paris is on the floor in my hallway looking for a ticket out! Tina - I'm really looking forward to checking out those sites - thank you! I really like the idea of a mini-check pillow & will keep my eyes open for some. Bungalow House - were you the one that rents & bought a dark leather chair that you weren't thrilled w/ in the end because you couldn't quite make it cottagey in feel? If that was you I hope this helps. I was thinking of that person while doing this. I moved the darker olive curtains to the office/ play space across the entry hall from the LR. It seems to have worked really well as there is now the same green color flow from rm. to rm. but w/ a different intensity so I am very pleased at that happy accident. I picked out an olive green wide stripe wallpaper for the upper 1/2 of the vestibule walls so when you walk in you'll see the lighter green walls of the LR to one side of the entry & the darker green curtains & off-white walls of the office to the other side of the entry. Des - the light curtains are from IKEA & were about $25 per pair & are 118" I believe. They come w/ their own hem tape. I need 108" also & I won't spend $100's of dollars on window treatments for a home that I'm not staying in. I think that I'll leave the B&W's where they are. DH's grandfather did the pic of the bird over the desk so if I rummage around my in-laws attic I may be able to find something of similar size to put on the blank wall.

I've made so many exciting changes. I love my new colors, greens, browns, accenting with rust, and will post pictures soon. Sorry,furniture arrangement remains the same. I bought two round oversized wood tables,and a matching oval coffee table, painted walls Old Salem Gray, added a couple area rugs,living and entryway, finished sewing interlined plaid drapes last night,now I am trying to decide how to hang them, added a couple embroidered flowery pillows, seems like the list goes on and on. I need to paint fireplace brown yet, buy new lamps, a picture, and accessories. Do you like either of these ideas...built in shelves with , cabinet doors possibly painted Whitall Brown, same color I plan to use behind the tv or the Floating Shelves painted brown. I don't really like the paneling look on the builtins but I thought the brown cabinets below to match the brown above the fireplace would work ?? These are the shelving /bookcases INSPIRATIONAL pictures I think will work. Do you like them?? Thank you so much for inspiring me to make CHANGES...I've been waiting to move, and now I love my "new home"..well not really, but I'm feeling in style now with painted walls!! Will post entry, living and kitchen pics soon. Today I am sewing my patio door drapes, in a fabulous multi colored stripe. I just LOVE the area rug -- and it brings the sitting area together! It IS a bit more traditional -- but might work with a more contemporary rug in the entry -- if the colors do work together. Try the two rugs -- and then simply walk around the whole area -- and see if the combination works!

Is there any way to move the sitting area back from the fireplace/TV a bit -- at the moment it does appear to be a bit crowded there ......

I do really love the colors and fabrics you have chosen -- can't wait to see the remarkable change that painting the walls will make!! You must post LOTS of pics! LOL!

As for shelving -- build them right to the ceiling and paint them in the soft trim color. IF at all possible -- add closed cabinets on the bottom -- and then open shelving at the top. That will give you space to stash electronic bits-and-pieces and hide the cords. Plus you can never go wrong with a bit more storage space in a TV room!!

I always wonder about those lists; I wonder more about the people who invent them than the rules they invent. I like the area rug and think it works beautifully with your furniture and fabric.

I'm struggling with a paint color, trying to match the olive green color in the fabric. Today I may try a sample of BM Providence Olive, I did not like Bay Bronze. Is anyone familiar have with BM Providence Olive color?? I'm also embarrassed to walk back into the paint store for my fourth sample, not counting how many times they adjusted them, hate being the PITA customer. :

You might want to check out Olive Branch also. I bought a sample of it and it looks pretty. I got way more than four samples, so no need to be embarrassed yet :)

Is that a Target rug made in China? It looks like one I bought during their "Global Bazaar" last February. I loved it. Six months later it started to stink like wet dog. High humidity makes it worse, but it's really about the jute backing and the latex between the jute and the rug fibers. The latex is breaking down. You can see white powder under the rug.

If it's a Target rug from China you might want to reconsider. I can't even bear to have it in the house anymore. It's a beautiful rug other than the stinky issue.

I'd get rid of the rug and put in a coffee table with some weight.

Where is the fabric going again? It matches the fireplace so well, that I thought it was part of the mantle - tiles.

The rug is Kensington Chocolate ,made in USA, distributed by Oriental Weavers of America, purchased at Lowes. If we stay at this home another year maybe we will be putting in a wood floor which we are currently doing in the bedrooms. I need the open floor space for my grandson, so I can't put a coffee table in at this time, there would be no place to play!!! The tiled entryway still needs a rug, should I buy the same rug in a smaller size??
Thanks for everyones suggestions, I'm still thinking..I'm bummed that I lost my fabric sample for the panels while shopping and my fabric is on backorder. Hopefully it is the right choice for panels, I doubt I'll find something better shopping, but I'm enjoying the search.

I have an OW rug and it has held up nicely.

Honestly, I just don't like the looks of the rug where it is. Is it too large for your foyer? If your grandson plays in that area, then it will just become a pain, The rug will start riding up when he plays on it. It will show all kinds of lint. Also, a rug on top of another rug causes a tripping hazard for everyone!

Your couches could use some color, so how about a couple of pillows on each, instead of the rug?
