My century home looks like a babies nursery! please help!

I posted this in "paint" but it was suggested I post it here as well. Maybe your creative minds can help :) I have a century home with dark wood original trim...the front of the house has a livingroom, and an adjoining sitting room (would have been the "parlour"). I've painted the main room SW Rainwashed - this basically BM Palladian Blue's twin sister. My dilemma is what to paint the adjoining room...it is currently light yellow (the lighter version of BM Vellum). The two together look like a nursery! I've added punches of orange to the blue room and need something that works next to it. Please help! This pic is the closest I can find to what I have, but mine is a bit more blue-green: http://www.decorpad.com/photo.htm?photoId=66538

Oh boy. I'm gonna sound like a broken record here, but I think your yellow needs to be richened up a bit. If you want to stay with a yellow tone, go with SW Ivoire. Or you can do Kilim Beige or Softer Tan. Wool Skein, Rice Grain, Netsuke, Popular Gray would also be considerations.

Would you consider carrying the blue into the sitting room?

Could you post a photo of the two rooms?

boopadaboo, for sure there is no rush on their own rooms. All our kids have slept mostly with us for a few years except #5. She does not sleep well with us (took awhile for me to figure this out) so she is mostly in her crib. But as others have said, most kids do not spend tons of time in their rooms, esp if you live in a 2 story. I also think room sharing is fine-- or it better be because most of my kids have to share. :) My objection with the original room was more of a worry of the future, LOL, that it seemed like it was trying to appeal to adults. Sometimes children are seen as small adults (and then unrealistic expectations are set). A room does not have to be garish to appeal to children-- on the contrary. I am assuming unfairly, however, that these parents will view the child as anything other than a child. I' m still worried about that mirror, though.

You guys are the best! She read your suggestions/comments/recommendations and I I am happy to announce that our little miss will be residing in a .........(drum roll please) Stonington Gray room!! DD did say it had a very slight blue undertone with the blind open but she is quite pleased with it. It is going to look even better when the furniture arrives this week and all the bedding and accesories are in. She is two hours away so all I have seen are cell phone pics, but I think it looks great. Kate and Jterrilynn - you are so right - the surrounding environment (light, trees, etc) definitely affect color. I will see if she can post a picture when she gets the room finished. She is much more tech savy that her mother :).

If you are in a warm area of CA, a dark roof will make your home hotter in the summer time. Just something to consider. The house already looks better by trimming back the plants to expose the entire arched windows. One thing--the little tree in front of the large window on the left--what kind of tree is that? It's planted very close to the house. It might not be a problem now, but it could be a big problem later and become expensive to remove. Trees, even small ones, should not be planted any closer than 10' from a structure. I think one idea to consider is to paint the front door a light color. The entry way looks like a dark cave in the above photo. A light colored front door will draw the attention to the door and away from the windows. It's really a pretty house. New landscaping will make a dramatic difference.

We have the flor squares in our living room. Dh wanted to get them because you can pull them up individually to clean them if something gets spilled. But I wouldn't recommend them. They don't stay together all that well, despite the stickers underneath. And sand and such goes between the cracks and scratches the floor. And because of the cracks in between and no rug pad underneath (the recommended installation method), I am afraid to clean them in place with a rug cleaning machine for fear of further damaging the floor underneath. So I will have to pull them all up and clean them all individually and piece them all back together. I have been postponing this task. . . . All rugs are bad for allergies.

I have a smilar set up in my house my livingroom is dark grey and the adjoining sunroom is blue. I matched the walls of the sunroom with my sofa to add continuity in the large space. Can you take a color from your sofa and bring it into the palor? Here are pics of my rooms. sorry the 2nd shot is really bad, took it just now with cell phone to show the wall color and I can not seem to resize it on PB today.

I really like SW Ivoire. I am actually considering this color for my kitchen to make my cream cabs pop a little more. Good choice if you want to play it safe.

I think the blue would be pretty in both, but if that is too much I would consider the suggestions made by Interior Stylist. Our last house was Kilim Beige to the point of overkill (or shall I say, OverKilim Beige, bwhahahaha) but I did get oodles of compliments on my paint color.

Oh my goodness - you are all amazing at this! I can't wait to stop by the paint store to pick up chips for all of your suggestions! Jeana these options are all fantastic, and the Kilim Beige might fit exactly what I've been imagining to add that richness compared to the BM Summer Harvest...But I will consider them all. I'll try to post actual pics on the weekend, and pics of the finished product when it is freshly painted. Roarah, you place is lovely! The gray would be very dramatic with my dark trim, but with white trim it is beautiful :)

p.s. Roarah, your suggestion to bring the sofa colour into the adjoining room is great - the Kilim might accomplish this....
