I have used and love Benjamin Moore Stonington Gray. Very nice, light true gray with nary an undertone (at least to my eye). I had a friend that was doing a gray nursery, painted the entire thing BM Silver Dollar, hated it and then used Stonington Gray. It was a winner! Here is a pic of it in my last kitchen. This is the only pic I could find. Don't mind the cake...but it was delicious!

The recipe is Ina Garten/Barefoot Contessa. It is called Strawberry Country Cake. It is really good and not hard to make. Here is a link:

And one more thing about the cake, I think she uses too much sugar in her whipped cream - I would cut that in half. It also makes two 8" rounds and you only need one. You can freeze the other one for up to 6 months. Enjoy!

I just got a sample of Stonington Grey for our home office, and it looks purple! I am going to put a second coat of the sample on tomorrow.

On the other hand, I am definitely going to sample the cake soon :).

I've tried Stonington and it's a fairly true gray. Gray Owl is lovely, I just put it in the laundry room of the house I sold and had sampled it in the guest room too. But it will read softly blue gray in some lights. Check it out in the kitchen in the "For The Love of a House Blog" to see what I mean. My local Pottery Barn has Cumulus Cloud over on a wall near a bed display. It seems like a perfect light gray to me.

I have also heard (somewhere) that Horizon Gray is a "true gray" but I've never used it.

OTOH, I think Stonington would be fabulous in our MBR.

Hopefully beekeeperswife will see this thread and chime in with the color grey in her old homes bathroom.
She had it paired with pink and it was gorgeous.

I remember Bee's bathroom! It looked so pretty with the pink towels and I remember her orchid. Hope she chimes in here.

Here is BM's Stonington Gray in my daughters north facing living room. She tried at least 6 different grays before finding one that didn't show purple or blue undertones in her space:

We used SW Silverplate in our recent bath remodel. We painted the ceiling Full Moon and the Vanity Butter Up.

I can't help with color but I can verify that cake recipe is delicious. I will be making it later this month for my birthday.

Layla from The Lettered Cottage decorating blog painted her kitchen in Gray Owl cut by 50% and it is beautiful. Could definitely see that in a nursery with pink.

I don't like the Stonington grey for our office, but I do like in the MBR.

I painted a nursery gray last year and went through a ton of samples. Stonington Gray looked blue in my nursery, and Gray Owl looked green. Revere Pewter was too beige. I also tried Behr Dolphin Fin and Edgecomb Gray. Inspired by bee's bathroom and her (and other GW'ers) recommendations, I got a sample can of BM Nimbus and it ended up being the perfect shade of gray. I loved it so much I painted our main bedroom that color.

Here's Nimbus in a nursery (paired with yellow and BM White Dove beadboard):

Behr Dolphin Fin 790C-3 is a nice true gray. I'm using that and other colors on the chit ...Irish Mist and gorgeous gorgeous Granite Boulder. On the same chit is Silver Drop 790C-2 which is lighter than the Dolphin Finn (both are nice). I would post a picture but for some reason photobucket will not let me sign in on my phone.

all color reacts to the environment. no color will read the same in different spaces -it's just not going to happen. so the "perfect" gray you find in one room can look completely different in another.

your daughter needs to get a few samples mixed and paint a decent test patch (i do at least a 4x4' square) in the actual room. most of my home is painted in different grays -and it took a lot of samples to get everything just right.

Kate is right! In other rooms of my sons house I used Behr porpoise, it has a purple undertone but in his space and lighting it looks gray but a gray that takes pops of color nicely. When first picking chits I viewed google images of rooms with gray but even that is only so much help due to the various differance in a rooms lighting. I would check out the Behr chit with the silver drop and dolphin fin though.

You guys are the best! She read your suggestions/comments/recommendations and I I am happy to announce that our little miss will be residing in a .........(drum roll please) Stonington Gray room!!

DD did say it had a very slight blue undertone with the blind open but she is quite pleased with it. It is going to look even better when the furniture arrives this week and all the bedding and accesories are in. She is two hours away so all I have seen are cell phone pics, but I think it looks great.

Kate and Jterrilynn - you are so right - the surrounding environment (light, trees, etc) definitely affect color.

I will see if she can post a picture when she gets the room finished. She is much more tech savy that her mother :).

Glad she found her perfect color! Stonington gray is a nice shade and was on my original list. Looking forward to the pictures!
