Kitchen Island needs Spicing up

I have a kitchen island that is completely functional, but needs help in the form department. As you see below, it doesn't have any finished look about it (look at the back- just plain). Has anyone ever trimmed out their island or does anyone know how it can be done? What should be done? Can my island be SAVED?! My head is spinning! My blood pressure is rising thinking about my island!! Please help!!

Could you put on moulding to match the panels on the doors, so that it looked like two panels on that side?

If you want to get fun, hang a collection of colorful artwork on there!

"I'm starting to think that color/tone of the tiles have changed over time - maybe because of a seal or wash or something? The first picture above taken several weeks before the herringbone fully installed is a lot more muted without the orange tone so much. Wonder if there is something that could "mute it back" to how it looks in the first picture? Yet, this could also be a result of more lights. A large window was installed since the floor tile and cabinets were purchased. " Yes, the difference that you see is because of the lighting. When I was looking at the pictures earlier, would venture that your first photo was taken with lighting from inside, likely a warm white incandescent (or it could be another type of bulb that is made to "read" as a warm white incandescent.) Your second photo shows as more of a natural light or possibly with flash...regardless, the light is coming more from the front in the second photo than in the first and the direction of where light hits will change coloration as well. Anyway, I think that the dark IKEA cabinet fronts are a great idea. I think they will work well with the flooring since it's not very likely that you'll want to change that.

Yikes! This is what makes people scared to use color, when decorating! Not all color will look like this...and even this would have been much better if used on the chair and throw cushions. Maybe some red vases or even a red border on the rug.

Wow. The guys on that inspectors forum seem to take great joy in finding interpretations making something illegal. So you might have some trouble getting it past your local inspector and would need to ask beforehand. It looks to me like it should meet the intent if you had enough of them to match the standard fixed receptacle requirement, and if the UL testing covered the specific type of installation. I don't see why they are comparing this to an extension cord from another room. If the UL testing covered the flexible cord as part of the device, I see no added hazard. You aren't going to overload it, walk on it, or trip over it. Some of them even seemed to be ok with the safety of the cord, but wouldn't count it as meeting the requirement for a kitchen counter. Seems to me if you have the required number always available for use, how it is connected is unimportant.

One more thing: as you walk through the space with chalk lines, etc, mentally prepare a meal, set the table, clean up afterwards, load and unload DW, entertain, etc. IOW, imagine yourself doing all the things that you normally do in a kitchen and make notes of what works and what doesn't. Oops, two more things. =) If you haven't already, do a tally of your kitchen items, grouping them by use and measuring how much space you need to store them. That will also help you narrow down which plan works the best for you and determine cab dimensions. I used blue tape to mark drawer sizes on my counters and set things inside the imaginary drawers to make sure my planned drawer sizes were sufficient. Here's the planning stage for my casserole dish storage: And here is the drawer in my remodeled kitchen: It takes time to do the above but it is so worth it, IMO. If I hadn't done this, I could have ended up with a drawer an inch narrower and not realized that it wouldn't hold my casserole dishes until I was putting things away. How aggravating!

You could paint the island a different color than the rest of your cabinetry to make it pop. You could install bead board to the back or run simple simple moldings from top to bottom to create a paneled effect. You could extend the counter top out behind it and support the overhang with nice chunky furniture legs... maybe even build some shelves between them. You could buy one of those plaster stencils and plaster some kind of large decal on the back and then paint it to look like the stone in your back splash.

Or any combination of these :) there are many possibilities!

Find a new island that you think would look awesome in your kitchen, and then try to recreate the features about it that you love.

I like the fact that your island is simple, I would put a silver bowl on it and let it be. Your kitchen has a lot of visual interest going on, ornamenting the island further could make it too busy, imho.

I read mitchdesj's post and thought he hit the nail on the head. A silver bowl. Your kitchen is really nice. My eyes went right to your cooktop backsplash. I like the island not standing out. Can't tell if you have a base molding on it but I have a wide base molding on mine and the cabinet part is plain and I was told he could add a molding later. But now that mine is in I like it plain. I get comments on the granite. You have such a nice kitchen.
