Window Treatment 911!

I would love some input on the best way to treat these corner windows in our bedroom overlooking the lake. As you can see (hopefully!) we want to keep the view, but also warm up the room in winter. We are in the woods so less need for privacy here.

This is an arts & crafts shingle style house and I want to keep it simple, not fussy/ nor pricey! Draperies that meet in the corner? shades?

I don't want sheers or anything fluffy (husband not a fluffy kinda guy!)

This is a masterbed room and its all about the view of the water.

What a beautiful view!!! I wouldn't want to block that off in any way...or cover your lovely windows. My vote is for panels that meet in the corner. Can't wait to see the rest of your photos!

Thought I'd also mention that my 10 year old just walked in the room and said "those windows are awesome!" Guess that's another vote for not covering them up. :o)

Thank you for those responses. I like both roman shades and valances but am reluctant to sacrifice the daylight they require because the lower half of the window is covered pretty much always with a "cafe" curtain (otherwise the neighbours look straight in). I've had mostly a top and bottom rod-pocket curtain, each half the height of the window, and am just flat-out tired of the look. So I am experimenting with different lengths on the two rods, as well as using pinch pleats, decorative trims, or something to quench the thirst for something ornately Victorian. But I am glad to hear that I'm not the only one "staying within the lines." Maybe in Victorian times they didn't care because the mouldings were no big deal, since everyone had them. I have used different types of rods inset into the frame, and for the cafe portion have in a couple of cases put a fancy rod with finials (I love finials!!) across the centre of the window, extending across the moulding, to hang the "cafe" part from. It seems to be particularly the mitre on the moulding that I like to have visible. Those are some cool links, and have helped me to articulate one thing I've been thinking about, which would be something like a shoji screen but using fabric instead of rice paper - maybe sliding panels instead of those cafe curtains. Not purely period, but maybe credible if I use the right fabrics. Our windows aren't original anyway (just the mouldings), so I don't mind messing with the frame a bit. Stay away from Smith and Noble. Stay far, far away. I ordered 6 shades. I paid Smith and Noble to come measure. When the shades arrived, 5 of the 6 were about 1/4 to 1/2 inch too wide for the windows. I asked to return the shades to get my money back. Turns out their "satisfaction guarantee pledge" means that they won't give you your money back, no matter what. They insist on coming back to re-measure, but a) I can't take time off from work again for this, and b) why would I want to run the risk of further screw ups and hassle? Their customer service staff come across as Soviet-style bureaucrats. Evidently, Smith and Noble could care less about disappointing their customers and engendering ill will. I guess my next steps are to file complaints with the BBB and my state's attorney general, as well as dispute the original charge with my credit card company. I'll probably send the shades back to the company's president for good measure. Keep in mind that Smith and Noble's "partner sites" (i.e. sister companies) include Ballard Designs, Grandin Road, Garnet Hill, TravelSmith, Frontgate, and others. You can rest assured that I won't be giving any of them my business in the future either.

If you are going to use drapes, you will need to hang them at the same spot on each window or it will look odd. I would do fabric shades on each window area. The fabric will give you the softness you want, but eliminate the issues with the beam.

@mimimomy Height from the floor to the lowest point of the arch of the outer side of the windows? I would guess about 7-7.5 ft as the overall ceiling is 10 ft. I can measure when home. Do you need full coverage for privacy? Not really but would prefer to be able to have the option for a darker room, and the option to wander around in underpants as needed. We don't have any 2-story neighbors behind us, and there's a wood fence between our lots. I can't picture how any sort of half-covering would look..... What style would you like to go for? Looking to head toward a more contemporary look? More traditional? This is our family room (e.g., casual living room; we have a separate formal living room). I generally prefer transitional/traditional with some relatively contemporary art/decor.

The Arts and Crafts movement was all about aesthetic simplicity and pride in personal handiwork. I would go with simple shades.

The windows are gorgeous and should not be covered up but you mentioned you wanted warmth in the winter and only drapes really give that feeling, so I second the first suggestion of drapes that meet in the corner. I would just make sure that when they're open they don't obscure any of the woodwork. By the way, I love the subtle tone of your wall color.

Roman shades. You can keep them up when you want the view, and if they're well lined, they should keep out the odd breeze, I'd think. And they're right for the period.

I wouldn't do roman shades, or any treatment that requires individual windows to be dressed, because of the view. Each window would lose too much of the view with roman shades or any blinds.

I would love to see lined drapes in a heavy linen, that you can pull back from the windows when you want to appreciate the view and that pull to meet in the corner when you want that cozy feel.

Thank you for input! Yes, solid lined drapes that meet in the corner with a larger return at the edges so view isn't blocked is what I also envision. My sewing skills are not up to lined drapes that homemaker wisely suggested but perhaps I can enlist my sister-in-law when my budget allows for this project. We will live with it as is for now but you will hear more from me as we progress - the entire house needs GW input on rugs, furniture placement and colors Thanks everyone!
