I finally found the bath dresser

I finally found an antique dresser to convert to a vanity for the guest bath. I'm sorry I won't have a photo till it's delivered week after next.

Just when I had given up hope that I'd find the "perfect" piece, there it was. My neighbor and I took a road trip 40 minutes out of town to a samll town that has rows of antique shops. Oh my I was in heaven. So much to see, but so little time and money. HA! Some of the items were so inexpensive and in excellent condition. When I see beautiful antiques like this for cheap prices it makes me wonder why anyone would go buy new furniture for twice the money.

Many antiques have clean lines and are not all ornate and foo foo. I think a lot of people see them as "grandma's" furniture, but the fact is most aren't. The very best part is they are 100% wood and no particle board or laminate.

Forgive me, but I don't even know what style the thing is. I was so excited I forgot to ask the lady who owned the shop. When her husband delivers it I'll get some information from him.

What's so wonderful about this piece is it's already finished. It also has it's original mirror attached. Oh, I can't wait to show y'all.

This couple refinishes everything before they put it up for sale. To refinish I would have had to pay what the piece cost.

Now here's the best part, I only paid $500 for it. It was $595 and I was able to get her down to $500!!

Finding this piece has lessened my stress level considerably. I now have all "mandatory" fixtures picked out so I can relax now and buy those other items that can come "in time."

She also had a beautiful corner china cabinet that I really wanted, but that was a bit too pricey for my pocket right now.

A dear friend of my has a dresser/vanity in her bath and it is just beautiful. You have good taste. So glad you found it . Can hardly wait to see it.

Congrats on finding the dream piece!

I think that a lot of people do equate antiques with a certain 'grandma' look, and many of them can feel that way. I also think that some people believe because the furniture is old it is well-made, which is not necessarily the case, either. And some people want a different look than what is out there that they can find.

Interesting that they refinish everything. I have always heard that you shouldn't refinish an antique or its value is diminished - perhaps this only applies to really valuable collector pieces (you know, the things that are worth thousands of dollars that get found in an attic and are from 1787), not just older nice furniture pieces?

Can't wait to see what you bought! I bet it will be great!

cat ky, what happened when you tried the tsp? It did work for me, but this was icing on the cake and what the tsp didn't remove, this has. The bathroom I gutted out had white hexagon tiles with white grout. I didn't find the Grout 66 when I cleaned that grout but the tsp did a great job. Maybe you didn't do it strong enough? Use a good stiff grout brush? I see someone is selling it on Ebay but no idea how old it is because it mentions it as a previous name which changed. I suggest if you have a Dal Tile near you to call and see if they carry it, and if so, if they will sell that to you since they normally don't sell to individuals. They may know where to tell you to get it if they can't. Otherwise, call the company, they should be able to tell you who sells the quarts, which is what I bought. Also, go to your local hair supply store, I went to Sally, and get the applicator bottle with the fine tip and use that to apply it to the grout. Look at the tips, some are cut finer than others. Unfortunately, there's no cap, so whatever you don't use, just dump back in the original bottle. Here is a link that might be useful: Grout 66

LOL Ya'll are funny. I got so many comments on my bad photo taking I took it off to retake them. So I'll post pics here: I suppose I should have typed between pics....what you're seeing is the master bath :P I took a close up of the glass to show how cool it is :) We had it made for us so no one has glass like it. It's super thick and while in the big pics you see inside the cabs due to use of flash, you really can't see into it (as you see in the glass only pic). It's really just another texture. The room inspiration was my collection of medievil manuscript pages. The "art" is dated between 1350 and 1700. The majority is mid 1400. I love the soft coffe stained tones you get with antique papers. The cabs might appear black, but they're actually a rich chocolate cherry, just like the croc tile. The cabinets are Omega custom. Since they do whatever you ask for, the design was whatever I wanted LOL I went with 27" deep lowers and then it has the little jut out. The cabs have pull out drawers inside for my daily routine. I also have the little pullouts for toothpaste, soap etc., as well as toe kick drawers, tip outs, blah blah...every inch of space is used LOL People always ask about the tub...you can easily get into it by stepping up on the step, sitting down backwards (bumm on deck) and swinging your legs over to drop down into the seat that is inside. We did plan on a bigger step (one that flipped out) and we planned on using grab bars, but really they're not necessary. Frankly the tub (while it calls out for nekkid adults and good wine) is most often occupied by our 3 year old. He loves having water to his neck (he's not left alone in there obviously) and the bubbles that the air jets make. Not to mention that the water is recirculated into a warmer so it never gets cold...again not that I'd know...but given his two hour splash session...I'm guessing it works for him :) Oh and it's NOT dark in the room. The shower has it's own light inside. The room is quite well lit and gets so much sunshine that I took the pictures late at night to get them without too much shine (which made people think the room is dark). We sit on the edge of a lake and have huge windows everywhere so the room is constantly light and bright. Our wall finish was done by an artist to mimic the travertine feel, but not be specific.

Somehow I missed this thread. Boy, can I empathize! My house is a converted church and we have 4 (FOUR) closets in 3000 sf. 3 are the size of small coat closets, one is a bit larger. And, there is only a small galley kitchen, no pantry. Yes, this does make it hard to organize!!! Though this house is roughly 3X the size of our old one, there is less than half the storage space. There is only so much stuff you can get rid of! Of course, we spent all our $$ on the house, so remodeling is not an option in the near future. I put cabinets over the toilets - big enough for hand towels and washcloths and shampoo, etc. I keep the rest of the linens under the bed (in rolling drawers.) I still have to keep the vacuum cleaner behind the sofa (and my guitar underneath)! We have a large laundry room and I'm trying to figure out how to make better use of that space. What is frustrating is that there is space that we don't really use, but I'm not clever at trying to convert this space myself. The house is all windows, too, so that really cuts down on available wall space; the third floor is an attic conversion - very steep walls and not conducive to practical storage. If I had a nickel for every time I've banged my head up there! I did buy a couple of big melamine cabinets (garage quality) to store stuff in, and that has helped a little. Glad to know that I'm not the only one with this problem! I spend a lot of time on the home decorating forum and just drool over those new houses with big pantries and huge walk-ins. Homebuilder, very cute. You're not afraid to tackle a painting/finishing project, are you? Me, I'm terrified of redoing furniture. Scared I'll screw it up. I'm glad mine came already finished. Made another purchase today by phone from the same dealers I bought the dresser. When I was at the shop I noticed an antique wash stand, was looking at it, then was distracted and didn't go back to finish deciding. Well, I talked to the owner by phone today and she said she still had it. I asked her to come down on the price and she did by $50. When I get it I'll post some photo's. I plan for it to go in the small hall we have that leads to the guest bath and seperates 2 bedrooms. It will look great with an antique replica of a pitcher and bowl a friend is giving me as a gift for my new house. Oh boy, I have the hall and guest bath furnished!!

Fabulous! Can't wait to see the photos!!! I just love it when people find a beautiful and quality piece of furniture "on-the-(relatively)-cheap." :)

les, they don't paint the objects. All of there things looked to be in original stain and in good shape. The piece I'm getting is the original finish, but I think maybe the man buffs out the bad scratches, etc. and then does some touch up and maybe applies some poly. He works on the drawers too because the drawers were easy to open and close. Not like a modern drawer is, but you know, not sticking. The only flaw I found on mine were 2 on the out edge of the mirror. I'm not sure if I should look into having that repaired or just leave it to add character to the piece. None of their furniture looked unstable or very worn so I suppose they start off with good looking pieces and it doesn't take much to make them look great.

You're right, if some of those priceless items are touched the value goes down. I saw one such item yesterday at another shop I visited. It was a really beautiful huge armoire, but someone had painted it and well, it took away from the antique factor for me. The only flaw.

I had forgotten just how huge some antiques are. You need a really, really big house to put some of these pieces. I saw some china cabinets and buffets that were easily 10 feet long and one was 108 inches tall. I remember that because they actually had a sign on this object telling the dimensions. I thought to myself, how the heck do you move something that big and mirrored!! Looking at all that old furniture brought back memories of my childhood. We had all those huge pieces because we lived in huge houses with tall ceilings back then. That was the norm in N.O. It's going to be nice surrounding myself with some of these furnishings in my new house. Bringing back some good memories.
