What order should I do these upgrades?

We are wanting to do several updates to our new house, but I'm not sure what to do first. We plan on repainting the entire interior, replacing all the lights, replacing all baseboards, doors, and trim around the doors, add crown molding in some rooms, replacing the tile in the kitchen and possibly replacing the wood floors (the wood floors would be last due to $$) I know we will do the lighting first but then should we paint or replace all the trimwork next? I'm assuming there is a proper order to this and wanted to check here first for some guidance.

I would recommend this order:

1. replace lighting and any wiring
2. replace the tile
3. replace trim, add crown, and prime them
4. replace doors, and prime them
5. replace floors, but don't finish them
6. paint
7. sand and finish floors

I would install but not finish new floors. Then do the wiring work. Then, I would:

1 Paint ceilings
2 If you are keeping the door framing, but only getting new door slabs, paint the frames first. Unhinge doors and paint them separately.
3 Paint walls
4 prime and paint trim and crown molding before it's installed. Touch up only after installation
5 Replace tile
6 Sand and finish floors
7 Install new lighting, assuming you are talking about fixtures.

There are some photos here... The spores are bright orange, not yellow and very powdery. If you look at the photos you can actually see little raised bumps. Every fall I go bargin hunting at the local nurseries looking for prennials I refuse to pay the full price for and a couple of years ago almost every Daylily they had was covered with rust, so yes nurseries can be a source of rust. If you decide to speay make sure you use a systemic. The first time I had it here I used a contact spray which looked like it was working but the rust kept coming back. I eventually gave up and let it run it's course. I am in Zone 5 so winter kills it. I had it in 2005, 2006, and 2007. I have since changed my buying habits and have not seen it again. I no longer buy from people in the south or areas without the extended cold spells it takes to kill it. If they buy new intros from the south I get them to send my plants out as early as possible to avoid their new plants sending it here. It is unsightly but I cannot say it has actually killed any plants here. I am sure it set some back and they did not preform as well the following years. Leaf streak can look like rust, look for the little RAISED bumps and the orange powdery spores. I was out in the garden this morning and saw 1 case of leaf streak that made me check to make sure that's what it was so even though you have seen rust a quick view of any miscolored leaves tends to make you think about it. thanks for the tips...I spent half a day at a local showroom looking at these units and asking questions. I've narrowed down my choices, and I'd love to go Wolf/SZ all the way, but the price delta is quite significant since the builder seems to have some sort of special deal with viking...and these end up being significantly cheaper than wolf even though msrp may be comparable. FRIDGE - We're going with the SZ built-in 48" :). The local store prices are better than what the builder offers. Has anyone been able to negotiate better pricing from their local dealers? RANGETOP - I went to the showroom yesterday and looked at these. The salesperson said the Viking Professional range tops have been re-engineered so they don't have the previous written about ignition problems. Has anyone installed these recently, and can you comment on this? I do a lot of Wok cooking, so I like how the Viking Pro 6 burner has one 18K BTU burner. Wolf stops at 15K (or 16K?) BTU. But I also bake a lot, so the low simmer on Wolf is appealing too. BUILT-IN GRIDDLE or SEPARATE - Has anyone compared and used the built-in griddle versus the separate add on? I know there's a separate griddle plate available for Viking, not sure about Wolf. How are the results using this compared to the built in version? I can get the Viking Pro (VGRT536-6B or VGRT536-4G) for $1500 less than the Wolf (SRT366 or SRT364G). That's a huge price delta. For the same price, I'd pick Wolf, but with a $1500 savings on Viking...I'm torn. Any thoughts from those who have these units? 30" DOUBLE WALL OVENS - I've narrowed my choices down to the Wolf E Series or L Series and the Viking Professional Premiere Electric with Knobs or Touch. Viking Knobs vs. Touch - Does anyone have experience with these two options/variations? Wolf E vs. L Series - I like the look of the E series better, but prefer the double convection in the L series. I've never had a double oven, so I'm wondering if I would mind one convection, and a second non-convection. For those that own an E series, do you even wish you had 2 convection ovens? Finally, the real reason I'm torn is because the Wolf units are $2000-2500 more than the Viking Professional Premiere double ovens. Is that worth it? Or for this price delta, would you consider going with Viking? (I really wish our builder had a deal with Wolf/SZ instead of Viking. It would make my life so much easier....).

I agree with the above, and I'd add that you should tear out the ceiling and repair the plaster before you install (or refinish) wood floors. We did the wood floor refinish first and then repaired the plaster and I bought numerous canvas drop cloths to protect them from the falling bits of plaster and grime!

Construction order is usually different than decorating order.

Do the most permanent part first.

Wiring first.
Then tile.
Paint last.

If at all possible, always paint last. It isn't always convenient from the "worker's" perspective, but consider this... if you don't like the paint color, it's easy to change. There's a million colors to choose from. OTOH, if you don't like the tile color, you're in trouble.

Although, if you paint before you do the floors, you don't have to worry about drop cloths ;-) This works better if the floors are really going away soon after you decorate them with paint splotches.

I remember a few years ago, when I decided to put up wallpaper in a powder room. I also decided to put up white ceiling trim.

I deduced that it would be easiest to do things in this order:

Put up the wallpaper.

Paint the trim while it was down.

Cut the trim.

Put up the trim.

My husband went ballistic. He could not understand how I could put up the wallpaper first. His reason: If we hired contractors, they would put up the wallpaper last.

It was SO difficult to make him see that the contractor's process was not the easiest process for me. I mean, really. Of you have the opportunity to paint the ceiling trim BEFORE you put it up, who wouldn't do that?

Sheesh.

I'm standing by my order of things. Construction first, as mclarke says.

The only detail I should have mentioned is that baseboards are last, when you are installing floors, so they come out of the critical path of replacing trim and go with floor installation. If you are not replacing the baseboards, you should pull out and replace the shoe mold when you do floors.

I went through the exact renovation project about 4 years ago and pretty much followed Bronwynsmom's order of events.
One thing I would add - prime and paint your new trim and doors before installation. Once the trim is installed, there will be some caulking needed, etc and touch up paint can be done then. Make sure you paint EVERY caulked area or you will have a mess. And of course, baseboard last.

What order should I do these upgrades?
