Wondering about Tolix dining chairs

I saw the Tolix Marais A chairs featured in an article in Traditional Home magazine and am wondering if anyone here has them or has ever sat in them? They are made of galvanized metal and can be ordered from Design Within Reach. Looks like they are not available locally so I am reluctant to order anything I can't see first. I am on the search for sturdy and comfortable chairs for kitchen/great room area. I also like jurors chairs, also seen them called bankers/schoolhouse style chairs. I am thinking of having a table made by a local Amish store, kind of a trestle with an Arhaus/Restoration Hardware look but made out of solid wood and with the option of leaves. Any suggestions? This will be expensive and I am trying to do my research. Thanks!

The tolix is also available at Pottery Barn I believe.

Thanks palimpset, I will check it out. I was just there today, but I will look online. Have you sat in one? Just don't look very comfortable to me.

Don't write off fabric just yet. You could use microsuede, Crypton, or any of the newer indoor/outdoor fabrics available now. My DD chucked a whole bowl of tomato soup on one of my pale blue microsuede chairs and I swear it cleaned up perfectly. I think softer lines, and fabric, would bring some balance to the angularity of your room. I love the artwork and might think about pulling some color from the painting next to the stairs into said fabric. I know and love your kitchen from the KB. Nice to see you over here. looking forward to seeing more! :-)

Phoggie!! It's nice to hear from you again! I can't believe what a great memory you have.. those lamps were 4+ yrs ago! How exciting about your new home, I'm sure the Amish crew will do you good! Thank you everyone! I just returned from actually "seeing" all the sample! I got a price locally - it's CRAZY, I guess they don't want my business! They are 50% higher... Anyway, the samples I saw were awesome, and helped me narrow it down between Barcelona & Pecan, but they really almost look the same!? I was about to ask the designer some questions, and he helped.. somewhat. In regards to the hutch, I think I will do the same color... 12 to 14 weeks before it arrive... so just intime for the holidays!

Thanks, Pal. I wasn't sure what the year was on the tag-- you think it was 1974? I'm fine with it being vinyl as long as it's in good shape. Tomatofreak, I just know I can't judge comfort by a photo-- we are going by in a few hours to test-sit. I think our style is pretty eclectic, so it could work.

jejvtr: Thanks for the feedback. I am still looking. You are right--that sight is addictive. I think part of the problem is my rug was an impulse buy--used Karastan on CL for $300--and the colors there tend to be more on the cool side whereas the curtains are more on the warm side. The navy reads more blackish IRL. I think I would prefer to coordinate with the drapes since I can see myself swapping out this rug at some point... My instincts don't always steer me in the right direction and there are lots of detours. How did your house turn out after you painted it? I remember some progress pics, but not a final. housefairy: Thanks for the tip on the fusable interfacing and the fabric guard. I will look into both of those for my project. ronnieroo: That is probably best to just order the samples. I saw on another DR chair thread where the poster bought fabric online and the online pic looked different than her pic. What fabric project are you working on? I haven't seen any posts from you lately.

On the Tolix the seat seems too flat.

The Emeco 1951 could possibly be an option @ $315-435 vs $245 for the Tolix. The seat is molded pretty well and they are really similar to the Heerenhuis chairs in the Kundig house.

The Emeco 1951 chair looks fun-isn't it the one made out of recycled coke bottles? I also like the Emeco 1006 Navy chair, which costs more. The thing is that I want to buy at least 4-6 of whatever I get. When we all are here I need 10-12 chairs. I won't make any decision until I get the table thing figured out. I have my grandmothers maple extending table but it is not big enough when all are here. It is long when extended, but narrow. I have tons of seating elsewhere, but I like us all together. Thanks for your help. I value your input because you know what you are talking about!

The plastic one is 111 which is neat.

I like the Navy Chair with the wood seat ($670-$1330)

and I would like one with a hard back, upholstered seat which is apparently not an option.

The 1951 doesn't have the bars but it's relatively inexpensive for Emeco. The Nine-0 has a lower back. We got one for my mom because it was lightweight and solid and she could push herself out of it using the arms. The lower back may not be okay for everyone but she was about 4'8''.
