Where can I buy toile transferware?

I'm looking for brown toile plates and whenever I do a search, I come up with a website called decorativedishes.net. Has anyone bought from this company and is there any place else to find them? I've also checked ebay, but they don't have much in brown. Most of the ones I like are around $39.00. Is that about average?

I'm up late tonight and on a posting spree! lol.

Ebay! You can get the plates you want for only $10 or $15 in excellent condition.

I always use the "Buy Now" part of it. I hate bidding.

Ideefixe, the brown transferware from the arts and crafts period is exactly what I'm interested in. eandhl, yes I asked about the vendor but she only comes in during a weekday morning, once a week. Unfortunately that's when I'm working too. She has an amazing collection for sale, though. One thing I don't understand - she has a notecard attached to each piece but it never tells the date or even range of dates. Why do you think this is? Linda, now I'm really confused. : ( "It's all authentic transferware, weather it's 150 years old or made yesterday. " Does this mean that it doesn't matter how old the piece is that I buy?

I also love transferware and had a difficult time deciding which color so I just buy any one that appeals at the time! If you can't decide on any one color you might consider the polychrome which has many. I originally started many years ago with a dinner set of blue/white and more recently bot a set of pink/white. I also have many plates as I can't seem to pass them by when I find them inexpensively. I have almost every color there is I think and use odd pieces in vignettes or arrange plates on walls. I recommend you do a bit of research as there is a great difference in quality in transferware made in Britain vs. made elsewhere. Recently many companies are having it made cheaper in other countries which usually means quality declines. While I only buy 'made in England' transferware there is a difference between the older pieces and the newer even with that. Brown may be difficult to find as it has been the more popular color recently and perhaps not as much was/is produced. One of my favorite colors is purple which is quite rare, at least in my world. I only have one very old plate which is chipped, crazed, and cracked but haven't had the heart to break it in pieces for crafts *yet*. I love Nancy's blog - it's especially fun to see pieces on her etsy site that I have bot at a yard sale for $1 - $10 that she sells for $15 - $hundreds!

Mila - sounds like you have a plan, and I know what you mean about not wanting to wait to follow through on your plan. There's always room for more roses if you get creative! Glad the pictures helped you get tempted - they're all great climbers and you can't go wrong with any of the three you mentioned. Summers - for sure you'd have to finagle a way to attach the canes to the trees, and that's getting way too close to Quadra for my skin's sake. He's big and thorny, and between two trees he'd be just waiting to pounce. For sure you'd need another kind of support in addition to the trees, or he'd be flopping on your other roses as you mention. I used to grow my Quadra as a free-standing bush and he was at least 7' wide and aggressive with space. Can you stretch some sort of trellis or arch between the trees for extra support? He might not bloom as much in part shade beneath trees, but I'm all for giving it a try if that's where he is. I have Veilchenblau beneath a huge oak tree and it's pretty impressive (though it doesn't want to climb). Cynthia

Can I propagate Rosa fortuniana through seed? Where can I buy it?

I have never seen Fortuniana set seed anywhere I have encountered or grown it. Fortuniana is considered to be a cross between R. Banksiae and R. Laevigata, therefore a hybrid which would not germinate true to the type from seed. So, no, IF you could find Fortuniana seed, you would not be able to raise the exact rose you are looking for from its seed. And, I know of no source for Fortuniana seed as it has never set seed in my experience. Where are you located? You may be able to obtain cuttings, depending upon where you live.

I collect transferware and have had good luck at Ebay, Marshalls, TJMaxx and Homegoods. In fact, Homegoods has some brown transferware in sets now for fall. If you have a store near you check it out. I've seen some with the turkeys for Thanksgiving and some w/ birds.

Msrose, if your transferware doesn't need to be vintage, you might check out "Look in the Attic." It's all new stuff, but pretty nice reproductions.

Thanks, everyone! It definitely doesn't have to be vintage, but I am looking for individual plates, not sets. Do the stores you mentioned sell sets only?

"Look in the Attic" does sell a lot of sets, but they also have individual plates & platters. Taking a second look, I don't see a lot of brown, so this may not be a helpful site for you while on this particular mission.

The suggestions from the others should lead you to solo plates & platters. I'm not an ebay/etsy shopper myself, but those places are great resources if you are (I need to get on the bandwagon!) I agree w/Cooper & Bonnie, TJ's or Marshalls should have what you're looking for. Just this week I saw the turkey plates Bonnie was referring to at both stores in my area. They are beautiful dishes. I collect transferware but only vintage, not new pieces. I buy many of my pieces at antique stores and you can pick up some real deals. I have also bought off ebay and etsy (search under vintage, not hand made).

I use Johnson Brothers "friendly village" pattern for the winter holidays. I bought almost every piece I own in it off ebay.

Mrs.Rose you can buy REAL antique brown transferware for $39.00 and probably less in this recession for plates. Platters are a different story, think $300.00 for big ones, give or take. Scour the antique shops and buy antique ones and if you get tired of them you can sell them and get your money back, unlike new ones.

At the stores I mentioned you can definitely buy single plates. If you have time to search antique shops you can also find lots of transferware. I have a mix of both old and new and buy a piece here and there. I have a "dinnerware addiction" for sure!

Oakley, glad you like the site! I think they have some neat, well-priced items that are really fun, even if they don't have the panache & appeal of a true vintage find.

Bought a pair of blue transferware candlesticks that I really like from them. Very pleased with the quality.
