Searching for a not-so-ugly bathroom fan
Comments (15)I can't remember the exact details (it was a few years ago), but we had it all planned out before the fan went in (and it took a week or more to ship the cover), so we must have just looked at the specifications of the fan. We were working with a professional contractor, so we just gave him the idea and he ran with it. And yes, they are heavy. We had our contractor install it, and I do remember him saying that he didn't trust the screws that came with it, so he put in his own (more solid) screws and anchors. And we haven't had any issues over the past 3+ years. I wish I remembered the details of what he used, but I think it's a well understood problem and my guess is there are known solutions once you have the weight you need to suspend. Any contractor (or some of the savvy folks on this forum!) would probably know the right way to do it. We got the idea from a remodeling book at our local library, so it wasn't something we came up with, and you can probably find other examples and further details if you search around. There are a number of vendors if you search online, but I believe we got ours from Signature Hardware. Here is a link that might be useful: Signature Hardware...See MoreHelp with rough, ugly laminate counter edges
Comments (11)We have installed laminate over our existing countertop, and the edges look perfect. It sounds a bit like the edges were not cut and sanded properly. Or maybe the tools that your dad used to cut the edges were not the right ones, or were not sharp enough so the laminate ended up rough. We used a router to cut the excess off at the edge and its important that the router bit is the one used for laminate trim - a flush cut bit. Also, presumably the router bit should be sharp, not old and rough. We also then took a sanding file so that the edge wasn't too sharp. Ours looks great. If the Sharpie by itself doesn't do the trick, could you use a file to smoothen out the roughness? If nothing works, perhaps try again by installing another piece of laminate. There are lots of youtube videos that describe the process. I think that is how we learned how to do it....See MoreProblem with Samsung French Door Refrigerator's Water Filter
Comments (113)Always use Samsung brand filters. Filters from other manufacturers, even if they indicate compatibility, may damage your fridge and water filter housing, or break off and leave pieces of the filter inside (like the cap), preventing a new filter from being inserted. A few years ago, the HAF-CU1 model's design was changed from a 2-rib lock to a 3-rib lock in order to provide a tighter fit and better seal. However, the new filter design will still fit in older models of refrigerators, which is why the model and part number was not changed. The first time you switch to the 3-rib type, you may need to perform the "fully unlock the housing" procedure described here, even though the old 2-rib type was also a genuine filter. If the old filter inserts easily but the new filter does not, it is because the old filter is not opening the locking mechanism all the way to make room for the correct Samsung brand filter. It only opens the lock enough for itself to get out. To fix this, hold the old filter in the locking mechanism and turn it all the way open before letting it come out. This is sort of like using the old filter as a screwdriver to open the lock all the way. The steps are: Temporarily reinstall the old filter. While pressing the filter into the housing, turn it to the left as far as it will go, even past the point where the filter could be removed, until the filter can no longer be turned left while held into the housing. Remove the old filter, and install the new filter. If this method does not work, or the old filter is no longer available to use, visit our Support Center to request service....See MoreHelp!!! Cabinet color change leads to hinges looking ugly! What to do?
Comments (19)Thank you all for your replies and suggestions, especially the reassurance that mixed finishes is not at all unheard of. I went to the store and purchased some Rub n Buff to test. I have never heard of this stuff! I also bought antique brass and bright brass hardware at Home Depot to try spray on, too. Once I showed it to my husband, he said that if we were going to take the time to hand apply the rub n buff wax paint that it might be better and less time consuming to just spray all the hinges instead. Then he spoke to a friend at work who used Rustoleum metallic spray for all his hardware and that it turned out great. I had mentioned spray painting before to him, but his reaction was that it would not work long term due to the movement of the hinges. From what I have also read online, if you do several light coats, followed by a clear sealer topcoat, the finish lasts a lot longer, so we may go this route in the end. We have decided we aren't going to rush this. We are going to consult with a carpenter to get a quote for new cab doors and drawer fronts just to see what it would cost for a new style. I'm suspecting it is more than we can spend right now. If it is, then I will spray paint or rub n buff the hinges so that they "hide" into the espresso stain finish and then decide what color knobs to buy. Then I will re-finish all the bright brass on interior doors, so I will be left with only two finishes around the house... I hope! Thanks for the pointers and if anyone finds this post again, I welcome future input. I will post an update, too!...See Moremissmary - 6b/Central Maryland
