This is an estate sale worth driving to, doncha think? There won't be any bargains, thats for sure, but holy cow there's GORGEOUS stuff there!!!

Chair fanatics DO NOT LOOK ;-) - there are positively drool worthy chairs. If you love barley twist anything what a sale for you! The house itself looks to be worth going for - probably emptying it out to be torn down :-(

The settees, the art, the textiles...... I'm practically vibrating! Anyone want to go?

Oh.....I wish I lived closer. Such beautiful items there.
It would be fun to watch even if the prices are high.

I may be interested in going, but unless I'm reading the ad incorrectly, it starts on Saturday, not tomorrow, Friday. And it continues thru Monday, which, I think, is unusual for an estate sale.

Buyer Beware> I have bought items from Goodwill off and on for the past few years. We didn't have a store close by. One thing you need to check is the outrageous shipping charges and handling charges. I saw a lovely metal vintage style tea pot I would love to have....bid 3.00 reasonable............shipping 10.00........handling.....2.00. Hmmmmmmmmmm tea pot not so attractive at 15.00 and that's if you get it for the 3.00 bid. I love looking thru all the items Goodwill has but some of their shipping rates are way out of line. All these items are donated and I know for a fact it doesn't cost 10.00 to ship one tea pot. Don't want to rain on your parade just want to make you aware. I also bounce between goodwill and ebay and yes I am a wicked sniper...............LOL Does anyone remember Andy's Warehouse Auction? It was run by Fingerhut no less..........oooooooooh the bargains I got there and their shipping was reasonable. How i miss them. There were a couple others but I don't remember the names. Sigh! Hmmmmmmmmm maybe I should google. Then there's freecycle.............I can't begin to tell you all the goodies I have gotten off there. Ok so I belong to 5 different ones.............:) I subscribe to all that are within a 50 mile radius and try to pick up two or more items on one trip if possible. Anybody watch the Junk Brothers? My husband, 2-year old daughter, and I, were sitting behind this guy at a religious meeting, so after the final prayer, I introduced myself and welcomed him. He was with some friends of ours and it turned out that he had just met them the week before. He had been traveling with his wife and small daughter to move to another state, when a drunk driver hit them head on in the desert fog. His truck was totalled. The baby was in a car seat and was fine. His wife suffered many serious injuries and was taken to our local hospital. That's how he came to meet my friend, who had been called when people of our same religion had requested help at the hospital. Well, anyway....he was thin and stressed and trying to figure out what to do. There was no instant connection--no attraction. I invited him to dinner with us, but he declined. As it worked out eventually, the wife was air-lifted to a hospital in the city where her parents lived, where my (DH) was moving. Because of the wreck, the ensuing lawsuit against the drunken woman who had just chalked up her 4th accident while DUI, and both vehicles totalled, DH lost the job transfer to the new state. A few months later, he was back at my meeting. He had to return to fight the legal battle in person, so got a job in my town. His wife, on finding out that she was getting a nice sum as a settlement for her injuries, decided to stay with her parents, keep their daughter, and divorce him. Within another year or so, I found myself divorced about the same time his divorce was finalizing. I moved into a room for rent as a temporary measure while saving to move to California. He was renting another room in the same house. Somehow...some way.....without ANY prior notice of each other in the preceding 2 years, we became friends. A few months later.....we both moved out of the house...and into our own place as husband and wife! One of the things we both thought was funny as we began dating, was finding out that he thought I was nice to show a concern for him but he never gave me another thought. I felt bad for his situation, but he seemed to have no real personality. Until we started to really talk while living with the family that owned the house, neither had much opinion of the other. Red

Well, this is the end of the first day. Just put the older one down at 8pm and had to install a night light for him too. He does fine in his mom's room these days, but with her not there tonight to sleep in the same room, he needs a night light. He used to sleep in his uncle's room right next to the bathroom, but this is the newest sleeping arrangement since the holidays when all the bedrooms were full. I loved rocking the 2 year old and singing songs before putting him down. Don't get to do that much and probably not for much longer. Maybe by then, our older son will provide us with a grandchild. He is marrying in September. We got out the Bristle Blocks I have saved for over 30 years. I was pleased to see that they were selling them again by the time the grands were born. Mr. Potato Head has been put together several different ways today, and the Fisher Price 30 year old barn, animals and farmer family are scattered about too. My back aches! Should be fine by morning.

"You don't understand your DH's way of thinking because your not codependent." Actually, I totally do. I had just not thought of that before. My mom is a (recovering) alcoholic. She has been sober for what will be 8 years this fall. I definitely had (and still do, to some extent) a codependant relationship with her. After my parents' divorce, it frustrated my dad to no end to see me "go back" to my mom time and time again, only to have her relapse and let me down. My mom is the kindest person but when she was drunk, occasionally, a mean streak would come out, and she would lash out with hurtful things. When I was pregnant with my DD she called me a slut. :( You have to know my mom to fully understand how crazy that is--she has such a kind, gentle spirit, the worst curse word I've ever heard her say is d*mn. She is very spiritual, quiet, a bookworm, etc. One time when I was about 12, she was drunk and my brother, who was 8, wanted a snack. My dad was at a baseball game, not knowing that my mom had been drinking--this was very early on in the course of her disease. I made my little brother some pudding and my mom staggered downstairs and flipped out for some unknown reason. She threw the pudding bowl across the kitchen, shattering it, and pudding went everywhjere. She slapped my face a bunch of times and shoved me out the backdoor and locked me out of the house. AUUGHH. It is hard to even think about this memory today. :( I was HYSTERICAL. I ran to the neighbors but no one was home. I remember sitting outside sobbing for what seemed like hours waiting for my dad to come home. My little brother came out at one point and said she had gone upstairs and fallen "asleep" and that I chould come back in. I didn't, I waited for my dad outside. I still remember my dad just hugging me and rocking me when he got home. He was FURIOUS. Took me and my brother to a hotel, and actually filed for divorce. My mom checked into rehab---her first stint--and was able to not drink for about 3-4 months. My dad at that point started going to Al-Anon and this is really when the cycle began. They did not divorce until I was 18, and she did not get sober until I was 21 years old. I am now 28. ANYWAY--my point is, I would continually let myself back in and I'd hope she had changed, and then she would drink again, and it would just be hurtful. Even when she wasn't mean, it was still awful when she would drink because she'd be out of commission for days, even weeks, at a time, and she would miss events, etc. It makes me sad to type this today. She missed my junior and senior proms because she was in rehab for both of them. Missed my May Day senior year--a BIG deal at school. Came to my graduation, but she was fresh out of rehab, and I had not seen her for about 4-5 months. I remember being happy that she was there, but just not trusting her sobriety at all, and feeling very detached from the whole situation. On my 19th birthday, I knew she had been drinking all summer long, and I hadn't really seen much of her; but still, I went over to her house for dinner, and she was drunk and all the food was burned. It was AWFUL. She had made a favorite meal of mine, and it just broke my heart to see her alone in her house, drunk, lonely and sad--but still trying to be a mom in some way. :( I will NEVER get that memory out of my head. :( I can almost feel how sad and depressed and lost she was. She is doing so well now, though. Still goes to AA meetings several times a week, works a program, and really has just changed her life. She has made ammends to everyone, even my dad. She is remarried and is a GREAT grandma to my DD. She told me when she made ammends to me a few yrs ago that she could not undo all the hurt her drinking caused our family, but that she could somehow repay that by being a wonderful grandma. And she IS. I think sometimes it is extra hard for me to see how BM is, and to see DH semi-believing her and giving her chance after chance after chance. I know how hurtful it is to grow up with an alcoholic parent and to see SS going through the same thing is really painful. It makes it even worse to not be able to really do anything about it.

bac717 if I said I like to be early would you believe me? I didn't think so ;-) That's a big oops - I misread the ad in my local paper - glad you caught that, thanks, or I'd be going the wrong day!! I was making a list of many house and garage sales and got ahead of myself. Can't go Sat, unfortunately but at least I'll never know what I missed.

The Saturday Sunday part isn't unusual although holding it over to Monday is, but a lot of that will be availability for pick up of purchased items. Anything selling at that point will be closer to bargain territory.

Come to Milwaukee. I have a ton of that kind of stuff from my mom's house that I don't know what to do with. It's been here for a year now.

Really les? Nothing? A lot of it is too foofy for my taste and the LAST thing I need/want is another tchotchke to dust! And I have no room or need for more furniture unless it's on a something comes in so something goes out basis. But I can usually find a way to use gorgeous linens or a piece of old silver in a more modern/funky way.

bac717 I generally check only my local Pioneer Press paper because I don't travel great distances for these sales - just not worth it in time/gas/$ for me. If I did this for a business it'd be a different story but this is more entertainment. If there's a particular piece I'm after I'll look online at ads out of my immediate area with Pioneer Press or CL - bought a desk in Hinsdale last month - but generally I stay in the North Shore suburbs.

As for meeting somewhere, I think this was attempted not too long ago - maybe it actually came about and I just wasn't aware of the details. GreaterChicagoland being as spread out as it is, it's tough to come up with a place convenient for all. Transportation is an issue for some people if they don't drive so even central locations can be problematic. But I'd sure be willing to try. I'm suburban north so naturally the first thing that comes to my mind is The Botanic Garden - with beautiful fall color, a bit of shopping and a cafe for an afternoon snack. Free admission, but the parking is expensive if you're not a member - $15/car. The Garfield Conseratory is beautiful - not sure what the autumn exhibits are. What are your ideas?

shermann I missed your post - have you considered having a house sale? We get ads in our local paper all the time for sales in WI because it's so close - you'd draw from this area for sure. Is there enough that it's worth hiring it out or could you do it yourself? I've found CL to be a great selling tool and you aren't limited to the 4 small photos they provide. Take good pictures of everything you'd like to sell, make a Picassa album, put in descriptions, dimensions and prices then make a link to it in a CL ad. Worked well for me. Heck - hire me and I'll do it for you! When my son was at Marquette I was up and back to Milwaukee all the time - what side of town are you in?

I'm in Franklin, dlm, in the sw corner of Milwaukee County. I was born & raised in Chicago, one of my kids still lives there, others are in Zion and Beach Park. I often meet my dtr at the Botanic Gardens.

When I get serious about getting organized and getting rid of the stuff, can I pick your brain? I have no idea how to get rid of it. I have a few tables, a dining room set, bedroom suite, starving artist oil paintings from the 1970s, oil paintings from the 1920s, crystal stemware and crystal bowls, china service for 12, odd plates, silverplate, etc.

I'm clipping your post for future reference, OK?
