No, they aren't a bad idea if that is what you want! I have them in some of my bedrooms. I didn't want drapes because I didn't want to cover up the nice trim. The shutters, like blinds, also allow you to filter the light. I don't really see shutters as exclusively contemporary or traditional--they can work in either setting.

It's a great idea! They would tie the two rooms together. We have shutters in the public areas of our house, but not the bedrooms. I sure wish we did though.

Nothing is more traditional than shutters, but they look fabulously clean in contemporary settings. We have them on every window and love them.

Wow - thanks so much! This is exactly the feedback I needed. I've never had shutters but am certain they will be perfect in the bath. Do you have any idea as to the insulating properties? I'm tired of the heavy look of the draperies in the bedroom and want to make the 2 room work together. It's the clean look I want! I've been 'lurking' on the bath forum for ever and have gotten so much help there and suddenly it hit me I need to 'refresh the bedroom as well!

I forgot to ask about the insulating properties of faux wooden shutters! We live the Central NY and need a bit for the long cold winters. Will faux wooden shutters be as good as sheers and lined draperies? Thanks! Lots of new heat in the bathroom so not worried so much there. Please excuse the confusing posts - I swear I'll get better at it!

Hi Tikatoo. I have shutters in every room of our first floor, and I love them! I have the 2" wood plantation shutters in white, with no visible wand "thingy" (can't think of the correct word). You just use your hands to open the top and bottom louvers independently, which is a real bonus. It works really well when the sun is shining in and you want to filter it, but still have the light. My husband likes them because he can control the light coming in when watching TV in our great room without making it too dark. I am so glad I got them, and I do think they help with insulation. You mentioned you are in central New York, and I hear the winters are long and cold! (My newly married son and his wife just moved to that area this summer) Also, I have allergies and they don't hold the dust like fabrics. I just use a swiffer duster (actually my husband helps with this a lot). I vote yes for your shutters!

I have vinyl plantation shutters in every room in my house and we love them. I chose the vinyl because a friend had the wooden ones and he had the job of getting them repainted after several years. I wanted white; perhaps this would not be an issue if natural wood ones are used. They are amazingly easy to clean - a damp cloth once a month keeps them perfectly. They do work very well keeping heat out in the summer and in, in the winter. We live in Eastern Ontario Canada so have a variety of weather to deal with. Our house is fairly new but our decorating style is not that contemporary. The shutters work with everything. We also had ours installed with the rod thing on the outside because we didn't like the look of it on the inside. I recommend them.

I love shutters cause they give the ultimate privacy. On a trip to Italy a few years ago, we stayed in a villa and the room had inside shutters, but they were more like a bi-fold door.

I'm separating the doors and doing a panel on each side of the window, and painting the same color as the rest of the trim in the house, and adding knobs to open. ;o)

It just would not be a southern home if you didn't have plantation shutters on a couple of your windows. We were just measured for the 4 bedroom floor to ceiling windows which face south. I can't wait. We were so sick of opening and closing drapes every night. The master bath is glass block so I have a stationary roman shade.

I too love plantation shutters but I'm concerned with how much they block out the view. We have a window in a bedroom that they would be perfect. It would allow the light control and the view is just the neighbor across the street. The rest of the windows in the house have very nice views and I would be concerned about limiting the view. I rarely ever seen shutters pulled back, it seems like the louvers are just opened.

Also has anyone had problems with teh faux white yellowing. We have an EXTREMELY poor window that is almost like a solar panet. Will my white faux become yellow?

Depending upon the grade of faux, yes they will yellow. I have a large window in LR and two sets have done this. My solution was spray paint which solved the problem. No clue why the other 6 sets have not since they are all on the same window.

As for view, I love them for both view and privacy.

Patty cakes, saw solid outside shutters used this way too. It is a great idea. Much easier to hang with the right hinges and may not need framing other than what is already on windows.
