Arctostahylos tree, 10-15 ft high, berkeley yard
Comments (13)A. densiflora 'Howard McMinn' is a really nice and easy-to-grow manzanita, but it is unlikely to have a tree form (unless pruned up... and even then, it will probably not look right). It's usually wider than tall. In NorCal, you're looking at probably a 4' x 6' shrub after 5 years, and it may slowly approach 8' x 8' after 20 years. A. bakeri 'Louis Edmunds' is taller than wide and, with some pruning, will can look like a 6' x 4' mini-tree after 10 or so years (it'll eventually get to 8' or so tall). A. pungens and some of the A. stanfordianas have similar forms. If you're looking for a 10'+ tree-like manzanita, the A. manzanita hybrids (most notably 'Austin Griffiths', 'Dr. Hurd', and 'Monica') are probably your bets bets in Berkeley. Big Berry manzanita (A. glauca) from SoCal should also make it there, provided that you don't water (after establishment) between May and November....See More$10/ft to install checkerboard marble 12' tile? Is this high?
Comments (6)Your quote could be high, and it could be in the right ballpark. It depends on exactly the amount of labor you are talking about. Stone is always higher to lay than ceramic because it's trickier to work with. Does that include all of the prep? A floor that will have stone tiles on it will need to be twice as stiff as one that has wood so additional underlayment may be needed or even beefing up the home's joists with some blocking. Is this a straight or diagonal pattern? Diagonal means a lot more cutting and more time. Does this include sealing? Marble is porous and will abosrob stains unless kept sealed. Bear in mind that sealing will not prevent etching when it comes into contact with any acidic substance. This means that your installer has to be careful in cleaning grout off of the tiles as any regular acidic grout cleaner will etch it. It's usually better to seal the stone after it's been installed but before the grouting occurs. This is a PIA for the installer and adds time to the process. You pay for the extra time always on any project. Get more quotes, and make sure that the same exact labor and products are being compared....See MoreShould I lower my 10 ft Island to 34" height?
Comments (18)I'd totally notice! Drove us nuts that our counters were a little lower than standard height when we bought our house (knew it needed to be remodeled from the 1920s original though so it didn't matter). That being said I think it depends on how much it costs. I also really like having some standard height and some higher height in our kitchen so that there are work spaces for different people. DH doesn't mind the cooktop being lower - ergonomically it just doesn't matter as much as for prepping....See MoreISO Advice RE 10 ft tall Cactus
Comments (8)I would love to put it outside, but I doubt at this point that I could get it out the door. Our living room is super bright, and it isn't hiding in a dark corner or anything. I'm guessing maybe the light is too filtered? The best I can do is put it in a clear window with the curtains open during the day. Our main, very large, windows are colored, causing the filtered light. I'm not sure how long the previous owners had the plant, but they did have tinting over the regular windows, which I have removed, so should be able to provide direct sunlight....See Morethreeapples
