I think the chairs and the table you chose are a great start to get what you want- beautiful look by the way!!! I would get the table in black for sure. Can you post a pick of the room you are working with? You have a great start so far!! I think if you can post a pic of your space it will be easier for everyone to share ideas :)

I like rug #3 better. It has a slight floral pattern but is not flowery.
You could also consider a table like that with a faux Biedemeier treatment. You would keep the top in the wood color but paint black to the sides and as an accent. If you google the style or look on ebay, you will see what I mean. It is a very classic look.

Sheila: Thanks for the encouragement! I have been really overthinking this area. I found the inspiration picture after my chairs were purchased and the table selected.

Homebody: Below is a picture of the space as it is now. Please try to ignore the dog marks on the sides of the chairs. That's why I'm changing them out.

Diana: I thought about a two-treatment table, but thought a stained top and black bottom would be too country. I couldn't find a picture that seemed to match your description.

I think you are heading in the right direction if you want to emulate your inspirational picture. That table in black and black legs on your chair with the third rug would be great. Are you going to do a couch too?

Joyce: That's kind of what I thought. The rug is a key component and I'm really having trouble finding an inexpensive animal/grandkid friendly. (In the past week, my DGS dropped a huge spoonful of ice cream on the rug and our male Aussie, who has....ahem....poo removal issues, (TMI??) sat on the rug.) I found a couple of better candidates than those I showed, but I'd like to keep the cost under $300 or so. I also have to have a 5 by 8; a 6 by 9 is too big. I've been focusing on green and brown because that's in the picture and I love green, but maybe I should expand my search to a different color but similar pattern?

Vampire: No sofa. No more room. On my other thread, it was suggested to get two folding bamboo chairs for when my grandchildren visit, which is what I think I'll do.

I also have this pricey Tibetan rug rolled up in the basement. Does anyone think it would work? I'm thinking not.

My DIL's mother is also an accomplished artist and I try to encourage my grandchildren to draw, hoping they inherited her talent; how I wish I had it!) Those are some great choices. I especially liked the first one. It looks like it has green in it, but the description doesn't metnion it. And you had the size perfect!

I LOVE the chairs that you bought (Where, if you don't mind??? Comfy? Yes, black legs!) and what I'd do is hunt flea markets for a pedestal table and paint it myself, if you have flea markets available to you...
Your current rug could stay...can you buy a small, patterned rug and layer it?? Or do try the one that you have downstairs. It just may work.

I think the lower heights of the chairs and table play into the look of your inspiration photo. I get a feeling of just sitting, chatting and wanting to linger at the table.

I really like the pattern of the 3rd rug you showed. It's got a definite design without taking over the space.

The suggestion to paint the apron and pedestal of the table black sounds good to me along with painting the chair legs black as well.

Well you are doing a great job and it did look like there was no room for a sofa, that's why I asked. I like the idea of folding bamboo chairs.

Thanks, Anele, for taking the time to find those rugs. I'm hoping to find one with a green in it because (I know this is stepping over dollars to pick up a penny BUT) I already own 2 large pieces of green velvet fabric and green is one of my colors in the adjoining great room.

Lake Geneva outdoor chairs. I went to North Carolina to sit in chairs and these were VERY comfortable. It was surprising how many high-end dining chairs were stiff and uncomfortable. I have been watching Craigslist for a table, but I can't go bigger than 42 inches, and I want a more streamlined base, and they're hard to come by. I like being able to choose my finish and size. And thanks, Loribee, for the inspiration photos.

Mona: Are you saying to leave the top stained and paint the rest black? That would be my first choice, but I'm afraid of looking country.

I personally like the 1st option in your group of three and really like the one you have in your basement. It would then be your own version of the inspiration picture.

I also like rug #3 with the black table and paint the chair trim black as well--though better than that would be a nice, dark brown, like SW Woodsy Brown. I would live your window trim as is.

That rug, though, only comes in 6 by 9, which is too large. You're both very thoughful for helping out, and make me think I'm on the right track.

I also spelled Biedermeier wrong last time. The pieces I have (inherited, and from the early 1800s) have a semi orange tone to the wood and black accents. It is a very classic European look. The table that came with my set got ruined and so was not transported over when my grandmother passed (not my decision), or I'd take a picture of that table. My grandparents had their dining room set up like your picture. There was a loveseat of sorts plus dining chairs around the round table. It was a larger table than yours and had 3 or 4 slimmer chairs, but it is what I thought of first when I saw your inspiration photo.

I was intrigued by those outdoor rugs. Hard to know what they look like in person, but if you're dealing with messy grandkids and pets in an eating area, the "scrubbable, hoseable, bleachable" aspects of those polypropylene rugs have some appeal! If you find one that's too big, I'll bet it wouldn't cost that much to have it cut and rebound at a rug store.

Just a thought.

Thanks, Loribee. I ordered my table. I got 40 inches, rather than 42, since DH said that would work better in my space. I also got it stained a black color versus the paint. The Amish salesman took my inspiration picture and customized the base and the pedestal to more closely resemble it. He said it would take close to 3 months to make because, as he said, "It's hunting season, and if William wants to go hunting or fishing, he'll just take the day off." The chairs should be here in a few weeks; they said 8-10. I've also about decided to go with the below rug because it has gold in it to incorporate the gold in my roman shade. I got a sample of it, and it goes perfectly. I'm still thinking about the great rug suggestions I got for a change. I usually change rugs out every 6 months or so because I get bored. I ordered some gold velvet to make the pillows. I'll be sure to post pictures when I get it done, and what a sweetheart you are to remember!
Also, thanks, lovesummer. I've seen some great indoor/outdoor rugs. I have this one in my sunroom, and love its cleanability. It was also only around $100.

Can you bear another set of opinions...?

The keys to the look you are emulating are color discipline, symmetry, scale of pattern, and quality of finish.

The three patterns in the inspiration photo are the tile pattern of the rug, the rough fiber of the chairs, and the tufting on the sofa. Everything else is smooth (the painted table, the velvet pillows, the lacquered lampshades, the simple bases).

The rug brings the grid of the windows to the floor without copying it, and its mossy gray-green color looks natural, like a forest floor, while the tile pattern is reminiscent of old Portugese or Dutch tiles. The green pillows are the only other color besides taupe, cream, black, and white, so take care when you choose your rug to stay within a disciplined color palette.

You can also see that the scale of the pattern in the rug is large, and its surface soft and plush, by comparison to the chair's rough texture and the size of the woven pattern. The fabric on the very simple sofa is also velvety and smooth, and the tufting adds depth while maintaining its strict form.

The first rug you showed doesn't have any of that contrast...its pattern is small scaled, its color is very like the color of your chairs, and its texture is also rough like the chairs. What makes the inspiration room work is the contrast between the soft plushiness of the rug and the rough natural fiber of the chairs. The third rug that laurensmom posted has some of those characteristics, but may not have the softness and the plushness, which adds the sense of luxury to the scene. Most of the ones you've shown, or been shown, have none of that depth and lushness in their construction.

I also think you might want to rethink the stain-vs-paint decision. The grain of the wood will add yet another texture and pattern to your mix, and won't help produce that serene, smooth, modern touch. I'm very glad you aren't opting for a natural top and painted base...that would give you a country kitchen look that is nothing like your inspiration picture.

Keep looking at your inspiration picture, and analyzing every aspect. Then you'll be able to incorporate all the elements that make that very sophisticated but relaxed and hospitable space work for you.
