Loribee - Pics of LR Changes/ Additions

Loribee here are a few quick pics that you requested of the changes and additions that I made in my LR the other afternoon. A few things need tweaked like moving the walls vases down a tad but right now I'm just glad that I finally got around to implementing the thoughts floating around in my head! Next up is painting the ceiling BM Chelsea Gray w/ some paint that I have left over. I hope I have enough! I'm loving the wall color that I've choosen and do not regret going white. I think that the gray ceiling will look amazing w/ the white walls.

You can catch a glimpse of the linen like curtains in the first pic. I finally got them hung on rings. They look washed out in this pic.

Following Decorating Rule #16 "Decorate for the way you live not the way you want to live" I got rid of all of my dry clean & spot clean only pillow covers and replaced them w/ machine washable ones. The euro pillows are used by both dog and kids to lay and sit on.

The ladder that I've toted around in excess of 15yrs also saw life as a hanging rack to dry flowers before going into my basement for the past 10yrs. Our kids love getting cozy under throws so I wanted them to be easier for them to get (they used to be crammed under the TV and you could never close the doors). Each kid insists that everybody has their own and I don't want to see 5 throws laying everywhere. I'm going to put felt strips on th eback of the ladder where it leans against the wall so that it doesn't mark them all up. Please, please, please ignore the jammed in silk flowers! I was just looking for something to throw in there to get an idea as to whether ot not the vases would work beside the TV armoire.

Some old wooden boxes that I've had longer than I can remember are now holding candles and another old cheese box is holding the remotes. The handle on the old tool tote box makes it easy for me to clear of the coffee table in a flash when we eat in the LR.

Other upcoming changes are to finally put up the 3rd black and white pic that I have to finish that series and get a toy basket to put in place of that tiny round table by the ladder. Not sure if I'm going to get a weathered grey one like the ladder or the one that is the same color as the armoire. I'll probably get 2, one for each side of the armoire under each vase.

I'm not Loribee, but I love the warmth of this room! You have given me an idea for our remotes-what a unique way to use that tool carrier. The wooden ladder looks great with the throws on it. This inspires me to work on mine. Thanks.

Not loribee either, but I gotta tell you, great job! I am now on the hunt for one of those tool boxes and have a pretty sweet idea of where I can get my hands on one (dad's basement, lol).

Thanks everyone. I know art is so subjective, but it is nice to hear that others like it as well. She isn't for the faint of heart, but I love her and I'm glad others can appreciate the piece too. DH has gone from saying "well fine if you love it" to "that was so the right call, it looks amazing in our house." Maybe he just has good survival instincts?? girlville - I love fireplaces too. We plan on staying in this house for another decade at least, so resale isn't an issue for us. That said, it is only a painting, we can move it and do the fireplace anytime, and likely would before we sold the house. I have explored another couple of locations for the painting, including on the wall near our peninsula seating in the kitchen. The painting is large and given its orientation I honestly think that the location shown in the photos is the best spot for it. She could overpower almost any space, but our LR is a good size with nearly 10' ceilings, so that helps. I've considered putting a small (i.e. not very high but longish) fireplace in under the painting, but worry about the heat and the impact on the painting. If we do an ethanol no-venting fp they don't give off much heat, so that may be less of an problem. loribee - I didn't like the caramel colour on that segment of the wall before the painting went up. I think it works reasonably well with the painting though. Anyone else have thoughts on colours - does the caramel seem okay? What about the large white wall that continues into the DR? It seems a little anemic to me. Thanks again!

Thanks! I'm glad that it can inspire people to go for it and it's quite flattering to have it saved to files! jlt - the majority of my frames come from IKEA or Wal-mart. Sometimes I change the overall look by buying or having a different mat made for them. Many are just simple cheap document frames. Others come from TJ Maxx etc. and some are gifts. A fair amount came already framed like the French Landmark prints and Big Ben. Les - Thanks! I decided to go w/ the bright white because I wanted it to be crisp looking and (this may sound crazy) I didn't want the entire room to be 'over thought'. I still have a fair amount of grey strips up because I think that a grey or (better yet) a delicious black room that is adjoining would be phenomenal. I'm so torn because the thought of a black office across the hall is tugging at me like you wouldn't believe. I can see it - DH can not but he hasn't said no. I also really want the LR, office and central hall to flow as one since they are all so small but can easily serve as one large space since they are so open to one another. I also love this room: It really has become effortless to me ONLY because I don't make it a goal to finish any w/in a set period of time. It is always a work in progress and so I don't pressure myselfone bit. All things will fall in place. Eventually! Things that I do that has made it happen a lot easier are to just keep stacks of pictures and stacks of frames so that I can grab something and start working whenever the mood strikes. There's nothing worse than having the mood strike and then being limited on choices at hand. That feeling has made me feel pressured and end up feeling that it will never work out so I've quit. I started picking up frames here and there and just squirreling them away. And don't let the fact that you have a frame that fits into an arrangement but no picture stop you from hanging it anyway. That's when you hit yuour picture stack and have something enlarged or shrunk to fit. Some of my 1st ones are painful to look at because I tried so hard.

Goodness you all! I think the last two comments summarize the groupÂs split opinion on this LR DR space. Half of you think the space is headed in the right direction, but that the furniture needs rearranging and editing to give it more coherence. You would place the two dominant red print chairs closer together, add red to the couch, and cull some of the mismatched stuff (the rocker, black chair, tapestry. . .) The other half of you are less bothered by the mismatching and think the room just needs something to tie it all together, such as a DR rug, serving table in the DR, or window treatments. I am somewhere in between the two groups. To my mind, because the room has so few colors, mostly just yellow, goldish tan, crÃ¨me, red and black, the mismatching generally is o.k.(and is what we can afford!) I do think, however, that some changes are needed to bring more coherence. This is what I am thinking now. (1) Leave the chairs apart, like spurned lovers. Reuniting them just feels like too much red pattern in a not-large room. (2) Get the black wood chair out of the LR (maybe putting it back by the fireplace instead of the yellow DR chair.) (3) Stain or replace the octagonal table in the LR to make it blend in better. (4) Add a small black serving cart (on wheels) for the DR under the light switches to better demarcate this DR and for functionality. (5) Change the lampshades in the DR chandy to mimic those in the LR. (6) Reconsider, maybe, my general antidrapery bias. In terms of cooper and sheshareeÂs questions. . . .the ottoman is a pretty old one from LEE. I got it used. I am very happy with its style, comfortable, and its maneuverability. The chair is 16 years old, made by Century and was called it Gatsby style. I donÂt see it on their website now. The chair has a tight seat and back and pretty exposed legs. Because its cushions are tight, it takes a slipcover well. Any more comments/suggestions?

Lovely space. Here are some ideas to consider. Put the sofa where the 2 red chairs are to create a more distinct area between LR and DR. Put the 2 red chairs opposite. See if this helps to balance out the space. I don't like the tone of the red chairs with the fireplace, and think that neutral leather would look nice. They are nice chairs and you might consider them in a bedroom or other room in the house. I also don't think the wood tone of the mantle shelf goes with the fireplace brick. It could be my monitor, but the brick has some pink undertones, the mantle is too orange. I would like to see the mantle stained darker like the curio cabinet. I think an area rug would look nice in the LR. I think adding window treatments would be one of the first things to do, as it would warm up the space, and help bring the 2 windows by the fireplace into proportion in the room. There are also a lot of vertical things going on, and not enough horizontal surfaces to "ground" the space. With the curio, china hutch, and secretary all being the same proportions, I would like to see some console tables or end tables that are more grounding at that midlevel in the space. I think the lighting is fine if you like it. But adding some lamps on consoles or sofa tables would bring some light lower to read in the space. Overall, a nice space.

Thanks! This is the first time I've ever had such a 'light' colored room and so far so good! I've tried and failed many times w/ white rms. (I find it easier to decorate w/ color) but I've been moving painfully slow on this and reading and looking a lot at the things that you guys post and a few select blogs.

I love being able to pick up the box w/ candles and remove it quickly when the littlest one is around and then after bedtime swipe their toys off the coffee table into the basket below and plop the grown-up display back! I'm also looking forward to decorating it for Fall w/ acorns and stuff and evergreens and berries in the Winter.

WIP - the euro shams are from RH Outlet - They retailed for $70 and I picked them up for $14.99 each over the Spring.

I'm not opposed to a dog bed but at 12'X13', my LR os possibly one of the smallest LR's around!

My next additions that I'm saving up for are a seagrass type rug and this sofa (I already have the long white slip cover):

Just perusing some old pages I've missed! This is frome last September. Can't be here all the time!

ttodd, you are gifted. The glimpses of your home you've shared are simply lovely, so soft and inviting.

Do you recall the wall color you used here? Did you paint your ceiling gray?

Please post any more updated pics you may have if you're so inclined!

Thanks Catkin - that was really sweet!

The wall color is SW Pure White. The only tint tio the pure white base is umber. I did get the ceiling painted grey. Almost. I got about 3/4's of the way done when I realized that it was just too dark. I went w/ either BM San Antonio Gray or Smoke Embers and it was too dark as was the Chelsea Gray.

The wall vases packed away as it was impractical for people to sit underneath them and are being replaced w/ small black and white barn pictures in large white mats.

I started getting irritated w/ the ceiling so I stopped and moved on to my mudroom and kitchen.

I also started getting irritated w/ my camera and trying to figure out which lens/ setting will give me a wide angle view. Something I desperately need since our rooms are so small.

Boy - there sure are a bunch of kids toys that crop up in my pictures aren't there?

ttod, always enjoy visiting your home via gw. I love your style and energy. My energy has been limited to the verbal sort the last few months. I yak about decor all day long and get home and hit the sofa! Keep posting - I feel the energy!
