I repurposed my FR bookcase to DD's room!

After having the FR bookcase sitting on CL for over a week, it finally hit me that I could use it in my DD's room and swap out her toy storage bookcase. As it's a tall narrow piece it really opened up her room which is very small. We are very happy with the result. I wanted to show you while it still looks "pretty."

I was able to move in some additonal books that were in the FR there as well (second shelf). There is a 6-year age gap between she and her older sister (DS is 8-years-older) so I have a lot of books the older siblings have outgrown and she is not ready for, though these past few months she has started reading at a voracious pace and I think if she has the books in her room, she may start reading them too before too much longer. She is an avid stuft animal collector so it's always a challenge to find space for all of them so tried to work some of them into the mix. She said it now looks like more of a big girl room. Next project is to revamp the bulletin board which I plan to paint and put over her desk as well as clear up the desk top so she can actually use it. All ready for second grade!

And wouldn't you know this, as soon as I completed it, someone was interested in buying the bookcase. I'm not selling anymore.

Here is the old toy bookcase we had in her room which I plan to put on CL as well as sell/donate all the stuff she has outgrown.

Thanks for the offer, val. DH would kill me if I took on any more furniture, though (he's going to be um, surprised, when my bilevel mid century side table shows up if I can win one on ebay for super cheap -- ha!).

Just had a thought -- next time I'm up in the bay area, we should meet for coffee! How fun. We're planning a trip this winter, maybe around X-mas.

The new/old bookcase looks great with all of your DD's stuff on it! My DD's bookcase/storage hasn't looked that pretty since I decorated it right before she was born, ha!

I really like the Madaline theme you did. Very cute. Did you paint it yourself? Toy/book/games/puzzle storage is always a challenge, though we are slowly moving out of the toy stage. I was thinking of your play room. I bought the toy storage case online through a place that makes furniture for preschools. It's been really useful with the rounded corners and deeper storage so I could do stacking bins, but since we are phasing out all the sorting type toys, this setup now works better. I just need to find a good home for this one now. Most of my friends IRL have older kids and this is perfect for anyone with preschoolers. CL it will go then.

I would love to visit you sometime, here or there. If you ever come this way, do send me an email. It would be nice to meet you. We go down south occasionally as well as I have relatives in Mission Viejo.

You donÂt think the first arrangement looks like a cave? I would hang the picture on the wall, not lean it, but it looks rather cramped. I have a pair of tall thin buffet lamps I was planning to use with the picture, except that the shades would hide part of it, making it look even more cramped. If I kept it in the middle, I thought of pulling that case out more from the rest to set it off, maybe 4-5 inches. What do you think about this idea: I have a piece of 1 Â¼ thick granite, left over from my kitchen, I could put on top: almost same width but 18 Â½ inches deep (except IÂm not sure about the color, which is rusty red and black). The cases themselves are only 11 Â½ deep. That would mean the granite would project out from the front 2 inches, and the back of the bookcase about 5 inches. Make it look like a sideboard? But that makes the short case definitely the focal point in the room: IÂm unsure about that. Otherwise, in the other layouts, there really is no focal point. I imagine the eye will wander over the row of cases and then zero in on one of the art objects. The downside of #1 is that the corner canÂt be used now for a floor lamp. I can take the tall skinny case shown at right angles in the corner and put it by the door in place of the short case. But unless itÂs a skinny lamp it wonÂt fit in the corner. The uplight floor lamp I was planning to put there, because it throws a lot of light upward, has a 20" wide shade. The last arrangement before I posted here was #3. I find I am already dumping things on the short bookcase next to the door! But itÂs the only place to put my notes and tools right now. If I took back the short one to do #1, I could get another short but narrow one (15") for that spot, so I could still put a lamp on it. I know it will all look different once I have the books, art objects, and pottery on them, but I donÂt want to set them all up then decide to move the cases around again! There is no ceiling light, and there is only one window. Daylight is enough if you want to sit RIGHT next to the window, but I doubt I will ever sit there and read in the daytime. I am dependent on having good lamps in the room. I hate to clutter it up, though, I looked at Ikea (where I bought the bookcases) for bookcase lights, but they were all halogen, which is too hot; and too modern in style. I put a floor lamp in the corner for picture 3, and it cast a lot of light (could not use that shot with it on because it washed out the exposure). I wish I were not being so indecisive about this.

I was going to split them up, they're each only 19" wide and I have 24" to each side of bay. But now the seller says the crown is one piece, so I don't know how it would look to split them (though I was going to put the side with no crown against the wall, so swap the right and left as shown so "middle" was actually outside of each piece). I decided against built-ins for now since we are going to wait until we replace the carpet with hardwoods. Seemed easier to do it all at once (and we'll probably do a window seat then too). Plus even if my cousin built them it was going to be hard to find room to stain and finish two 8ft tall x 2ft wide x 1ft deep bookcases in the winter/spring. Now that it's summer I've been working on other pieces (waiting for good stretch of dry weather to take window sashes out and finish them - last week was literally making hay while the sun shone, this week has been finishing window casings for all the downstairs windows and a new continuous sill/stool for the bay, getting slider casing and baseboard installed. Plus *still* trying to figure out/get someone to install railing/newel/balusters (or at leas t a railing!) on our stairs, if you remember that thread from 9 months ago! I guess I'll keep looking for another matching Ikea shelf.

Ingrid, that's a good idea for really bringing your beautuful collection to life! I like the idea of choosing a color from one of your porcelains OR the most obvious, the wall color. Whatever you decide, IMO is something you should definitely do. Read below before you start. ;) C_and_J, great minds think alike~I suggested craft paint in another thread, how bizarre. Compared to samples, you can save a lot of bucks on paint you are never going to use and it just dries out. My DD recently spent $ 120 on paint samples since I hadn't thought of the idea. Keep in mind you can always mix to get what you're looking for, and if on sale, only have to spend a buck! Take your sample(painted on a piece of wood/foamcore/cardboard))to your paint store, ;)

The tv is currently on the opposite wall from the bookcase. This is our main room and right next to the kitchen, so a tv has to stay in this room. Probably getting a 65 inch. Yes, the one cabinet has wine glass holders there, but I don't think I want that set up as a bar there. The shelves above it used to have wine holder racks too, but I took that out. Ss a bar in the family room normal? This room is visible and centered fro the front door/foyer. (We had the sofa facing the fireplace when this picture was taken)

That looks great valinsv.

I have a question for you young mothers. Do you have to buy kits to anchor big pieces like that to the wall? I have been seeing this on tv lately & know I will have to do it when & if I ever have grandchildren.

We have one of those racks with the different colored bins from target in the playroom. That works pretty well. I can't even imagine a day when we'll be past the toy-sorting stage, LOL!

marti8a, it's best to anchor any tall furniture to the wall, particularly here in CA. Actually caught my monkey trying to climb to the top shelf of her bookcase a few months ago, so anchoring is important (although I can't imagine her doing something like that at grandma's house).

marti8a: That is what we are planning to do with L-brackets since we are also in CA. We placed it so that the path should it fall is not over the bed area.

sarschlos: It'll be there before you know it!! My oldest is 15-1/2; the youngest still leaves her toys strewn all over the house. I could've kept the other toy storage unit for another few years, but looking forward the bookcase makes much more sense for her and as I told DH if we store in the garage, by the time she'll be ready, it'll be trashed so here it is. The rest of her toys I'm trying to confine to here and a couple of bottom drawers in her dresser at this point. I did talk to her specifically about not climbing up to get stuff and I made sure to put everything she might like to handle on the lower shelves. The upper one is sure to fill with more trophies. Wait until you have that one to figure out! Trophy decor! If you play any kid's sport these days, you are automatically give a trophy so everyone feels like a winner.

My kids are both over 20, but they still leave stuff. If it's not makeup in the bathroom, it's stuff they don't have room for at their dorm apartments.
