Paint color ideas for red, white & blue theme room

We are redecorating my 8 year old sons room with a Yankees baseball theme. The bedding is navy and red, with white accents, and the window valences are navy with white accents. I'm having a difficult time deciding on a paint color for the walls - definitely not red, which was his first choice! White seems too stark.

Any suggestions?

For a boy's room, I would do a warm gray, or khaki. It would depend on the saturation of the colors. "Red" can be a strawberry, or a glass of wine, or a slice of watermelon -- none of which look alike. :) Are these vivid colors, or muted versions, or...?

If you were sticking true to blue, I might suggest white and blue pinstriping on the wall, via Yankees uniform, but I would not do it if the red had much presence.

You could use your colors above and below a chair rail on the wall. That way, the color isn't too overwhelming. Maybe white above navy, and then paint or hang some red accents above the chair rail. A touch of black is always good, too!

I don't have a suggestion about the white paint color, but wanted to make another suggestion. I have a basement done in a similar color scheme. Only, I painted just the one wall with a patio door that looks out on the lake dark blue. The other three walls are white. I like that the one accent wall becomes the focal point of the room. It frames the view nicely, and the other three white walls keep the room bright and light. You may have other reasons for painting two opposing walls dark blue, I just thought I would propose another option that might work for you.

How about a yellowish tan I know some people on here have those....I have a yellow LR/Dr and love it, but its a north east facing room, so it needed to be warmed up. That said it took me about 10 different yellows to get the right one....intresting enough I had to go with an orange based yellow as most others came off as green. Another tip if you go with a yellow...pick the color on the strip one shade lighter than the one you like... Good luck...my favorite colors are yellow and blue...though I don't have any good light blue colors for you as mine are more medium blues. BTW, blue couch with blue walls, might make for a chilly feeling room depending on the orientation of the room.

Groveraxle, thank you SO much for the renderings. How helpful. I really hadn't thought of green much but all this feedback is making me reconsider. And I agree that the lemonade porch ceiling should be a sky blue (for both tradition and the joy of it). Pennydesign, the green/blue pots are from the stoop on my last house. Previously I had potato vine (which does well here), coming through the gumdrop shaped metalwork top pieces. I picked them up at a garage sale, long ago, and they seem to be designed to be part of a hanging plant but are so huge, I never got around to hanging them anywhere. So I stuck them on those pots to give them some presence. I've also wound lights around them in the winter to highlight the gumdrop look. I put them there when I moved just to sort of mark the path but they don't have to live there. This year I've been so busy with other house projects (all the boring and costly system stuff) that I haven't planted anything so maybe they look silly?

Off-topic: There are various spellings of picanniny and you're right, all are racist. My mom had a collection as well, unfortunately. It came just before the stuffed jointed bunnies, which gave way to americana and finally Noah's ark. Fortunately the 90s ended with her purchasing a new home that does not have a two-story wall in the dining room and her collecting themes days were over :-D The interesting thing is that she has very good taste otherwise and her home now is a well-curated blend of her lovely finds over the last two decades. On-topic: My laundry room doesn't get any warmer than the rest of the house, however it isn't a small room in the basement which may make a difference.

What color is his furniture, and what is the flooring?

If he really wants red, why not? Do the accent wall his bed is on in the red, and then a soft blue/grey for the other walls, kind of like the color for their road uniforms.

Thanks everyone! I was actually thinking about doing a solid navy on the bottom and white with pinstripes on top. His furniture is maple colored, with light hardwood floors. The red in the bedding is more of a strawberry color.

I will look into a light grey and khaki color too.
