HELP! My Victorian's main color is white!! Color(s) for trim???
Comments (5)You'll find colour experts/fanatics on the Home Dec forum who might be able to help, especially if you post a picture of the house. I know just enough to know that some very subtle differences could make a real difference to the outcome. For example, there are whites, and whites, and then still other whites. If it's a cool white with blue tones vs a warmer white with yellow or pink tones, your choices may look different. Of course, it may just be a white white - ours was too, by the way, when we bought it; white all over, inside and out. I came to appreciate that as I started stripping paint and realized that at some point the house was likely sort of an acid jade green on all surfaces inside and out, as were most of the houses in this neighbourhood. We did paint the house, and I'm happy we did - not an original colour though. I'm not a huge stickler for maintaining original colours for the sake of authenticity. You obviously do feel that way, and I respect that, but I would question your belief that changing the whole house colour would be more work than merely painting the trim. You might like to visualize whether you'd be happy with white trim if you changed the house colour. This is because painting trim is more work than you might think, especially if you have three porches. Having said all that, with a base scheme of black and white, your range of colour choices is enormous, and personal taste is going to play a huge role, as will the kind of presence you want the house to exude. Obviously earth tones won't go (rusts, olives) as they go with beige, not white; nor beiges or navies, being too close to your two base colours. I tend to think soft pastels might be your best family to look at, and you could go either two-tone (light green and darker green) or two contrasting colours: blue and yellow, blue and pink, etc. Those would be a bit country, I suppose, or maybe a little feminine. If you prefer a really dressy look, grey might be your best option, perhaps with some black highlights to connect to the roof. Taupe and black might also work for that look. You might consider photoshopping a few ideas, or if you prefer the non-tech route, taking a few photos, printing them out, and colouring on them. I'm linking below to a blog entry by Maria Killam on choosing exterior trim colours in which she also talks about different whites. The rest of her blog may also be of interest to you. Comments (7)What're your summers like, Nancita? What exposure does the porch have and what do you use it for? For our front, north-facing walk-in porch I chose a traditional Charleston green, a regional color which is almost black, for a deep, cool look that would harmonize with the lighter green foliage all around, but we were forced to go light on the porch we sit out on because the summer sun on even a medium green here will make it too hot to walk on. I noticed on browsing the web that current front porch floor colors are typically deplorably limited and boring, but I would think any color that was considered generally acceptable for a front door could be used in a somewhat muted or darkened, or perhaps lightened, version without raising eyebrows. For back deck color, you're outside but still separated from "nature" while sitting on it. Would you like a look that reinforces the shelter feeling (interior-style elements and colors carried outside), or would you like to embrace nature more and feel more as if you were sitting in a park or woods, only without your chairs sinking in? :)...See MoreWhite house - black windows or white
Comments (27)We went with the black. I thought our front door was original but on closer inspection its a veneer over particleboard. I really like the 3 windows over 2 or 3 panel windows, maybe in a black finish on exterior. I'd like to strip the paint on the front stairs, maybe. Or yes, paint them something else. The blue must go. Thanks for your thoughts, all. They were very helpful. I think we always kinda liked the idea of black even though we traditionally liked white. We were afraid it'd look bad or be too risky. Obviously some think so, and I guess it could, but we decided to go for it! I think it's the right choice. Hopefully by making things right bit by bit we can eventually get back to something of its former self. Adam...See MoreWhite House - but what trim color?
Comments (11)So on those odd scallop portions of trim above those two bottom windows and then that bigger ornate trim around the door, would it be odd to do them in the same white as the house? the house is also going to have those “sticks“ wrapped and have two square pillars with molding. would or should those be the same white as the house? same white but different finish? A brighter white? if the door being blue would be too much, what about black? we are committed to the navy shutters simply because the church had already purchased them so they will stay. :)...See Morekatinparadise
