Color Ideas To Accent Navy Blue (LivingRoom)

I have a navy blue leather sectional, and while it will be replaced in the next year or so, I would like to decorate my living room now. I just moved into my very first home (well the first one I've owned outright) and I would like to make it my own.

Now the question is...how can I decorate around this blue couch. I wanted to do a lighter blue on the walls, and then tie in the couch with throws and pillows (I saw a picture in an older edition of Better Homes and fell in love), but now I'm thinking I want to do the bathroom a similar blue and also the bedroom in another shade of blue...the point is..I don't want an all blue household.

I was thinking about a reasonable yellow. Not bright taxicab yellow or anything, and not a pale, slightly off-white yellow either. I like bright colors, but of course I want to be sensible...I don't want company to come in and be blinded. Of course I already have picked up some paint swatches, but I can't get a good idea of what would look good from the little samples.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions (on yellow or any other color that may look good), I would GREATLY appreciate your input.

Tan shades, like Tobacco Road, look marvelous with navy blue, and might be much more calming to the eye than a strong yellow would be. It's also easier to find other accent colors that pair well. While I love yellow, too, finding the right shade that's not too jarring for a space where you spend so much of your time can be very difficult. I'd steer clear of yellow, IMHO.

I've been thinking about it for..ever. I think I will go back to a happy, yet sensible yellow for the bathroom and stick with my light blue/dark blue scheme.
I agree that yellow is too eccentric for the living room. Especially for me..I'm a country girl who moved to the city and the neighbors drive me CRAZY...so I really don't need yellow in the room to wind me up, I need a calming soft blue.
The walls are brown now and it drives me crazy as it feels very depressing. I like some of the tan/brown shades but this one just doesn't inspire a good day.
Would anyone like to suggest a nice light, bright blue?

Jane's personal kitchen has a lot of Scandinavian and European influence I think, though she did throw in an antique dish cabinet that makes the area look rustic. She chose a Dornbracht tall faucet for the sink as I recall, and I saw a comment she made at Houzz afterward that made me think maybe her faucet hadn't turned out to be the best choice for her--still good, just maybe not as great as she'd hoped. I just ordered a couple of Brizo articulating faucets for my kitchen after much research and think I will be happy with them. The most memorable kitchen for me from Attic Mag's archives was the one with the working fireplace oven in the middle. It was such a simple kitchen with great functionality, and I think it was in Italy somewhere that she rented while on vacation. We really don't do kitchens like that here in the USA on any regular basis anymore now that gas and electric stoves have taken over.

And it seems blue is a color many are painting their cabinets...I love your family photos and a FAMILY ROOM is a great place. I know I am not put off when in another's home and see their pictures. If you ever put the house up for sale the rules change. The issue isn't the color you chose it's the idea of an accent wall. There are other threads here about that and seems they are OUT.

How about a yellowish tan I know some people on here have those....I have a yellow LR/Dr and love it, but its a north east facing room, so it needed to be warmed up.

That said it took me about 10 different yellows to get the right one....intresting enough I had to go with an orange based yellow as most others came off as green. Another tip if you go with a yellow...pick the color on the strip one shade lighter than the one you like...

Good luck...my favorite colors are yellow and blue...though I don't have any good light blue colors for you as mine are more medium blues. BTW, blue couch with blue walls, might make for a chilly feeling room depending on the orientation of the room.

Our hall is a yellowish tan... I think it is a soft color and not an overpowering yellow tone... It is Benjamin Moore Barley... I don't have any suggestions for a blue... Good luck :)

I love the crisp look of navy,yellow and white. Why not peek around here at some yellow ( search for yellow rooms on this forum) and some light blue paint colors. You can then go to Lowes/Home Depot and get a few little paint samples (@$3 each) and some poster board. Paint a few and put them up in your space for a few days and see what you like! You could always use a pale yellow on the walls and then use the brighter "happier" yellow as pillows or a throw blanket.
Post some pics of your sofa when you can!
