Navy blue dining room and accent wall in kitchen too much?

Hi Everyone- My dining room is navy and white wainscoting- We are redoing the kitchen and considering a navy accent wall (remainder of the kitchen walls are cream, as is the family room that opens from the kitchen. Is this too much navy?

Considering that blue is a color that reduces appetite, I wouldn't choose it for the kitchen unless you are a dieting family. Try it at the fireplace wall, removing the family photos to a more private area like the hallway to bedrooms or in your own bedroom.

Me - not much a fan of contrasting/ accenting soffit up high, over the uppers. Is the flooring dark? what color are kitchen chairs?

Wow!!! An incredible story -- and amazing that you have dealt so well with such a mess! Well done indeed! :) 1) Yes -- another vote for the round table and more managable chairs. Pare down the chairs. Put the extras on your local Craigs List! 2) Yes -- another vote to extend the radiator cover. 3) Yes -- another vote to check out options like adding an outdoor screen in front of the window (with a fast cover like ivy that likes less sun) OR adding a covering like stained glass in a modern pattern OR simply adding bamboo blinds 4) Another vote for basic trim that matches the rest of the house. 5) Another vote to add a dash of color with cushions for the chairs (could have a couple of sets that work in different seasons?) and tablecloths. Thank you everyone for the advice! You've all given me a lot to think about. I hadn't thought of using the nook as a more functional space...what a great idea! I agree that the dark furniture with the white wall and florescent lightning is making it look so cold and harsh. I'm going to be working on the lighting first like you all suggested and then go from there. The couch and dining table are going to be replaced with warmer colored furniture after I get the lighting situated. The kitchen flooring is going to be replaced. I haven't figured out what color tile I'm going to go with yet. Any suggestions? Right now my favorite thing in the living area is the warm plank hardwood. Also, the black square is where a pellet stove was. I'm not sure if we're going to be putting one in or if we will be sealing it off. The A/C will be moved to a less conspicuous place once we get the windows replaced.

Hi, Johnny-- For your currently maroon room, I'd split it up in a few ways: Base, window and door trim to new white in updated palette (semigloss) Walls to your new grey in updated palette Keep overhead beams in current tone, but paint out the v-groove between beams in your new white (flat) Should add light to the space, highlight the roof architecture, and set off your updated flooring in there. One thing I noticed from your fireplace photo is that your wainscot paneling dies into one side of the fireplace and doesn't run that whole wall. That seems an odd place to end the run, so I'd consider having it run at least into the next corner or wrap that room, as well. Let us know how it all turns out - and keep on!

If you’re keeping that rug, I don’t love navy for the walls. I don’t like it with the sage/orange colors. Also don’t like the black chairs against the navy wall. I do love your windows, however, so pretty! I would add add some additional lighting if possible. If you can’t get some hardwired sconces, then plug-in sconces with a clean covered cord still look fine. Or lamps on a sideboard or small table. The room is going to look very dark if you paint the walls dark and only have 4 bulbs overhead in a single chandelier. Even if you don’t paint the room dark, having some more levels of lighting will be nice and make the room feel cozier. I don’t know what the other walls in the room look like in terms of where to place a fixture, but your photos look like they could use more lighting to me.

blue reduces appetite? I'm painting my whole house blue.

Could you post a pic that shows how the living room relates to the kitchen?

you have a lot of gray/silver in that room. not sure a navy is the right color.

what if you did a darker charcoal shade? or a grayish-blue?

I'm not sure I like the contrast of a navy accent wall against those butter-yellow walls you currently have. If you go with the navy, paint the other walls the same white as your wainscot.

I'd love it if the blue reduced my appetite- Win win :-) Seems like Navy is not the best choice...

Beth H- Would you mind sharing any suggestions you have for a darker charcoal shade? Or grayish blue?

@ Beth H. - red increases it, FYI! lol The psychology of color theory is really interesting. Apparently painting a prison pink reduces violence among the inmates! Who knew?

And it seems blue is a color many are painting their cabinets...I love your family photos and a FAMILY ROOM is a great place. I know I am not put off when in another's home and see their pictures. If you ever put the house up for sale the rules change. The issue isn't the color you chose it's the idea of an accent wall. There are other threads here about that and seems they are OUT.

I am the forum blue lover so can I just say I think that Slate Tile would be beautiful?

(and I have not noticed that blue reduces appetite. Then again, if it does, I cannot imagine what I would look like if my house did not have so much blue in it!! lol)

I think you could get by with a navy wall in the living room, but, right now, that white shiplap, jumps right out at me in the picture. Its way too white against your yellow walls.
