I love the sectional and the wall colour is perfect. Perhaps some added cushions on the sofa to bring in some other colours in the room.

Hi - I think it will all be very good - just at the moment you are not seeing the whole finished picture. The colors on your mantel need to be brought into the room a bit with cushions, throw, perhaps an area rug, or if you do a coffee table the colors can be added there also with one or two accessories on the table. It will look terrific. Nice sofa!

Colors on a montitor are never true and we are seeing an empty room without any other furnishings makes it difficult to judge.

It sounds like you are not feeling any love for the couch. From the items on the mantel it looks like you like deep, rich saturated color. The couch is a wimpy pale tone. Being a sectional it is one large 'area' in the room not broken up so it has to be right and not stick out. If the couch color is not just right, you will find yourself draping colorful throws and piling accent pillows on it.

Does the couch come in a dark chocolate brown?

What woods have you decided to use in the room? This would be a deciding factor.

I wanted to keep it neutral colors. We moved about a week ago and I just keept the believable buff color that they had and I think is a nice color. The carpet is neutral/dark.
If I go with a darker sectional color it will not be contrast with the carpet.
If I change the color of the sectional maybe I have to go with a totally different color, like green (I am not too much into green furniture)
If I paint the wall in a darker color maybe the room will look too dark since the carpet is a bit dark.

Thank you for your words. Yes, we are going to buy a coffe table. I am going to borrow some pillows to see how they look before buying them. I will post pictures when I get them - and we will look into the rug!

I guess a chocolate color sectional could work. I can always place an area rug for contrast between carpet and sectional.
The thing is that I need to decide about the main colors (sectional/walls/carpet) befor placing accent pieces.

Its very safe. I like a bit more color, so I would go a few shades darker on the paint color. If you plan on adding pillows and drapes you can add more color and totally change the mood of the room. Maybe instead of the mirror, which just reflects the same colors I would hang a trapisty or a set of prints.

I also like a darker shade on the wall but I am concerned that the room will get too dark since the carpet is a medium/dark neutral also, the living room is 17'x17' wich I consider not that big.

I like each individual thing by itself (wall color, sofa, etc) but put all together makes the room kind of washed out. For example, I often have seen a patterned sofa with a plain colored rug (the rug picking up a color in the pattern) or vice versa and that seems to add more interest. I will be doing this kind of thing eventually with our sofa (brown leather sofa and loveseat) partnered with a patterned rug over a hardwood floor of blues, creams, and browns - the brown picking up the sofa color). Walls will be a neutral. Pillows will be a solid color with maybe a mix of a pattern if it works out. Sometimes you can mix patterns (e.g. stripes and squares) but you have to be careful. Just my 2 cents worth. You're on to a great start, however!

marthaelena, your sofa is perfect. Think long-term. The lovely neutral sofa will provide a good backdrop for other options as your tastes change, your floor choice changes or you move.

Tone on tone is always elegant and serene. Add splashes with accents on the coffee table, pillows and perhaps a chair next to the fireplace. At some point, you may exchange the large mirror for art and add a smaller mirror over the fireplace. You're off to a lovely start!

In looking at the first pic on the left, I can see the 3 colors together. The walls look at bit too yellow with the more brown tones of the carpet and the almost off white creaminess(?)of the sofa. The sofa is an investmant piece that should last quite a few years. Paint can always change, sometimes often. If you love the sofa, then think about changing the paint. Look for something without yellow. A greyed taupe would work. What is the accent color you want to use? Bring that in with pillows, throws etc. These images below feel very clean and serene. The sofa has almost the same tones as yours. Paint seems to be more taupey grey and cream. I think these colors would look wonderful in your room!

One more thought...what offsets the light walls and upholstery is the contrast of dark wood in the furniture, frames, mirrors etc. That contrast is what makes it work so well and still gives it a serene look.

I like the paint, carpet, and sofa. That acts as a neutral backdrop. Now with a striking large dark coffee table with colorful assessories and colorful pillows on the sofa and perhaps a great dark framed art piece (that brings all your colors together) instead of the mirror you would have a completed look. Also would you consider drapes hung high over the blinds?

I love the things you have chosen and the monochromatic color scheme. It is the perfect backdrop for pillows and accessories that can bring in a pop of color. What kind of coffee table will you be adding?

I think the color is fine. I think it is not looking right because there is nothing else in the room and that is what you focus on. Once you get some contrast in there I believe it will look fabulous.

I think the paint color you have in there now will work with it.

Maybe it's the lighting, but on my monitor your walls look more yellow & the sectional looks more cream with a touch of pink. I love the sectional and would probably go with a paint that is a closer match or one that contrasts more.

I like monochrome schemes, but the bright white shades draw my eye. I know you mentioned drapes, but are you planning on switching shades? Maybe a cream or ecru colored sheer would be less dazzling.

The shades caught my eyes first too. I don't care too much for the wall colour but love your sofa!

I think the walls and sofa are really very nice. If you switch out the large mirror with a large piece of artwork and then bring some of the color from the artwork down to the sofa it will be perfect.

I love the layout of your room and the color choices, but agree that the colors all wash together. I understand not wanting green furniture but can you get that same sofa in a really really light aqua blue? I'm thinking kind of like the colors in the pillows of the other posters pictures? That along with pillows in a darker blue of the same blue family, as well as the color of your walls and chocolate would look fabulous! Blue is a naturally calming color as well as the browns, and I think it would give a nice soft contrast to what you already have. Hmmm, I like that so much...I may do it in my own livingroom make over!

Replace the pillow covers on the sofa with ones that pick up the reds and greens from the vases on your mantel. You also need some strong vertical lines in the room to counterbalance the long horizontal weight of the sectional. Maybe side panels for the window with a vertical stripe that picks up the red, green and gold tones.

The problem is the warm toned walls against the cool toned sectional. I agree that it's easy to paint and her photos are great examples of a cooler monochromatic scheme. They are contemporary rooms, though. I find, for some reason, it's harder to do a traditional look in that palette.

Decide what 'look' you are going for and make decisions from there. Do you like art that's warm or a cleaner, more serene type?

Yes, we have a little bit of an issue with the lighting. There is a fan with no light. the only lights are the ones by the FP.
Thanks for your opinion. The sectional is a ROWE and I thought was in a great price. I wanted a Room & Board but it was almost 40% more by the time I pay delivery.

I love clean lines, clean looking accesoties and also contemporary. I do not like too modern (like some accesories with glass and stainless steel or MCM sofas)

I am almost minimalistic, I do not like too many small ornaments. Actually, about 75% of the accesories we have, are gifts.

I use magic to change the colors. Actually, I used an old version of -Fireworks, which is not as sophisticated as Photoshop, and selected the pillow, then adjusted the hue/saturation until I got a color that went with the items on your mantel.

Putting in the draperies actually required real magic ;-)
