There are certainly recessed cans for sloped ceilings that are available at both the big box stores. Another option is sconces that could be mounted on both sides of the stairway. The recessed can(s) may involve access issues.

Have not seen any such recessed cans/trims for stairs...is the can a regular can and a special trip installed? Is the trim one of those eye-balls?

Just out of curiosity, why aren't there any lights there now? And a question to the pros here...aren't stairway lights required to have a 3 way switch so they can be operated at each end?

Why no lights...who knows? Luck of the draw I guess buying a used home. But I plan on adding them and using 3 ways at the top and bottom when I can figure out lights to find.

I do not think there is such a special can. I would guess people use trims/eyeballs for this.

You can use sloped ceiling fixtures for this. I think light-o-Lier makes a remodel can rated for direct contact with insulation.
I would probably use 2 or 3 stair lights on the wall going down the stairs if you have access from the basement.

recessed lights for sloped ceilings are kind of pricey. If the slope is not extreme, eyeball trims work just as well.

A couple of wall fixtures would be even cheaper.
I assume appearance is not much of an issue for basement stairs? so probably the most imortant consideration is which is going to be easier to wire.

Wiring is not an issue...my basement is being gutted and sheetrocked, so I can get access to anything. I cannot find any sloped cans...is there such a thing, or is it a regular can with a special eyeball or trim.

The reason I asked why there were no existing lights is this part of the NEC:

(2) Additional Locations. Additional lighting outlets shall
be installed in accordance with (a), (b), and (c).
(a) At least one wall switch-controlled lighting outlet
shall be installed in hallways, stairways, attached garages,
and detached garages with electric power.
(b) For dwelling units, attached garages, and detached
garages with electric power, at least one wall switch  controlled
lighting outlet shall be installed to provide illumination
on the exterior side of outdoor entrances or exits with
grade level access. A vehicle door in a garage shall not be
considered as an outdoor entrance or exit.
(c) Where one or more lighting outlet(s) are installed
for interior stairways, there shall be a wall switch at each
floor level, and landing level that includes an entry way, to
control the lighting outlet(s) where the stairway between
floor levels has six risers or more.

I was wondering why there wasn't anything there to begin with when it seems there should have been to get a CO.

If there is no such recessed can on the market, I guess you can use one of those white ceramic housings that attach to the ceiling that the bulb screws into. But you need to have clearance otherwise you can bump into it.
