problem w/ in-wall light timer

We purchased an in-wall light timer for our exterior lights this weekend.

Our exterior lights are on a three way switch (we have a switch in the porch and inside the house.

We decided to put the light timer inside the house and replaced the switch with the new timer.

Now when we turn the timer to "off" (so the timer function doesn't work) and turn the porch switch on the lights turn on for a second and then they shut off. We couldn't get the lights to stay on no matter what.

We replaced the exterior light bulbs with higher watt bulbs because we read some people had problems with the timers and cfl bulbs. This did not fix the problem. I looked on line and nowhere does it say that you can or can't use timers with three-way switches.

We decided that maybe the timer- switch was broken and removed it and will return it. However, we don't want to purchase another one if we are going to have the same problem.

Has anyone has this happen to them?

thanks,

renee
