I find it easier to decide these things looking at the furniture rather than the floor plan, but here's a thought. I've read that it's better to have the view from the entryway be open, rather than having a prominent big piece of furniture, like the back of a couch, blocking your view. The centered-to-window creates such an obstruction, whereas the centered-to-wall approach doesn't. Plus, as you point out, it looks like traffic flow is just better in the centered-to-wall arrangement.

I'd either center it to the wall so there's room for an end table or bump it up to the edge of the wall like this

I had thought about bumping it to the edge, which might make room for a chair and lamp in the corner - depending on the size of the chair. :)

This is a new construction and our builder includes interior design services. This is what the designer suggested:

Looks too disconnected from the sofa in either case. Is that just a result of the drawing? If yes, I like hilltop's option best. If it really is too far from the sofa, I would move it closer to the fireplace and position it like hilltop suggested.

Hilltop's got it: line up the end of your loveseat with the end of the wall, which will make room for a lamp in that dark corner. That free "designer" your builder included is worth just what you paid for her. That arrangement looks like hell.

powermuffin - the drawing is not to scale. I would guess they are about 3 feet from each other as of now (centered on the wall). Just enough space that traffic can comfortably get by. There is about 8 feet between the back of the sofa and the arched doorway, so plenty of room to move it backwards or forwards depending on the loveseat.

I'm liking aligned with the wall best, too. That will leave about 4 feet between the left end of the loveseat and the corner.

BTW there are small windows to either side of the fireplace, not represented in the floorplan.

Oh Magnaverde, that arrangement isn't even the half of it! I'm not the most tactful person out there, and my "thanks, but no thanks" was not well received.

I would put the life-sucking tv in the opposite corner, where it is much less visible, put the couch facing the fireplace, and two chairs with a table between them in front of the window. The two chairs give you just as much seating as the loveseat, but don�t feel like they block things as much.

I agree with Magnaverde - the designer is worth exactly what you paid for him/her.

les917 - I actually went searching for sidechairs yesterday. Didn't find anything I liked, but will keep up the search. The TV is in that corner because of the windows. Placing it opposite makes the tv almost unviewable (glare & reflection) unless the windows are covered. We could place a smaller one above the mantel, but I kind of detest TVs above mantels, at neck-breaking angles, etc.

That's an obscene TV though, 65" - so about 60" from side to side. I'm helping DH realize we can have a smaller tv, and still be a happy family. It's like a recovery process. He is a major audiophile/"TV"phile - thinks every TV must have full surround sound connected, wants "theater-like" quality, etc. Pshaw. All I can say is that we compliment where it counts, but it's usually not in the things we prioritize in our home. :)

I'm truly not a bad person, but I just have to share the "cover page" for the designer's portfolio (that is not facetious). It highlights her dramatic dining table chandelier...
