reinforcing plaster ceiling from above
Comments (2)Thanks for the reply. The fan is hung from a fan box which is supported by a 2 X 8 crosspiece screwed into the joists on either side. The ceiling plate, however, bears on the plaster via four rubber feet. I will balance the fan as carefully as I can but am still concerned about any vibration causing further damage. Thank you again J.G....See MoreHelp Electrical box for ceiling fan is off center!
Comments (12)The boxes are covered during the pour and then the plasterer plastered over everything. The plan shows the electrical box centered above the doors and all eight other boxes are correctly centered. When we went to look for the boxes and started chipping away we realized the offset. My husband says that when the pours are done occasionally things get pushed from their original location.I think I can live with ceiling fan location. But the light location is totally weird. The blades of the fan would probably hit it. I will have use the wall outlet and use outdoor floor lamps and just sacrifice the light outlet and cement it over. To channel to an appropriate location would not only be labor intensive and expensive but impossible to get the surface to look smooth and perfect.Having exposed wires on the ceiling in a pipe would be even more unsightly. The patio will be used for lounging and reading and looking a the view with a double chaise and chair. When you lay back and look up you would really notice the reconfiguation. Thanks for the suggestions....See MoreAny advice on hanging heavy (150lb) light fixture about bed?
Comments (8)A light that ways upwards of 150 pounds is NOT safely secured to a box. Even fan mounting boxes top out at 50 (though the code limits fans to 35 pounds). You are going to need to make some other structural support arrangement to hold this monstrosity....See MoreDoes this look like a ceiling fan-rated electrical box?
Comments (7)All ceiling fans, regardless of weight, must have a box listed for the use if the fan is supported by the box. It is more a matter of the vibration and wobbling that could strip the threads eventually. There may not have been a paddle fan there, but just wired for one as the second part of the code requires the listed box anyway. The code back in 2001 didn't include the second part, but it was still considered common sense and every electrician I knew back then did it this way. NEC 314.27 (C) Boxes at Ceiling-Suspended (Paddle) Fan Outlets Outlet boxes or outlet box systems used as the sole support of a ceiling-suspended (paddle) fan shall be listed, shall be marked by their manufacturer as suitable for this purpose, and shall not support ceiling-suspended (paddle) fans that weigh more than 32 kg (70 lb). For outlet boxes or outlet box systems designed to support ceiling-suspended (paddle) fans that weigh more than 16 kg (35 lb), the required marking shall include the maximum weight to be supported. Where spare, separately switched, ungrounded conductors are provided to a ceiling mounted outlet box, in a location acceptable for a ceiling-suspended (paddle) fan in single or multi-family dwellings, the outlet box or outlet box system shall be listed for sole support of a ceiling-suspended (paddle) fan....See Morebrickeyee
