I tend to doubt those chairs are original to the marriage. (And chairs are usually the first thing to go in an older set like this.)
Check out this mahogany duncan phyfe set. Here are more samples. What I see is the difference in the legs. Chairs are more geometric and boxy with a robust feel to the bottom. While feet or base of other pieces have a more elegant slope. It's hard to tell without the chairs being arranged around the table whether it's a nice blend or fighting it, maybe that will be the deciding factor when you see it in person? But as far as stain and color, it's a good blend there, imho.

Can't offer advice on the matching, but what a nice find. Love the buffet!!!! I just love craigslist.

What a gorgeous set! I'm not sure about the chairs, either, since they look more 1950's-60's, and more Chippendale-influenced than Duncan-Pfyfe. It could be as simple as turning the chairs over to see if the maker is on the bottom, and check the backs of the other items, too, to compare. Again, what a beautiful set!

I agree the chairs don't look the typical Duncan Phyfe like the table; but a good match none-the-less. What I notice is that the lines of the chairs with the swirley backs do match the swirls in the hutch cabinet. Depending on price, though, and if the pieces fit your space, it is a very nice find--esp. if it is a matched set of chairs.

Also, you can consider using Restore-A-Finish on them as well which may help a tad with the blending.

I am back from seeing the set. The price is 750.00 for all pieces.
Problem is the set was not in a house like in the photo but in the garage. You could not move two steps in the garage. The table was just wiped down with water before we arrived and was still damp. The chairs piled up in the back were so dusty that they looked white. The buffet full of dust and I could not see it straight on but from the side only and was only able to reach my hand in and open one drawer a bit. The china cabinet was in the smelly basement and I could see it. They seem to be in pretty good condition considering. I do not understand how anyone could put that up on CL and not even make an attempt at having it ready to show. I am not sure what to do. I am so upset that it cannot be seen properly and even though the husband was home , he made no attempt to help myself and daughter see the pieces better. I could not buy it without at least opening the table and trying the leaves and opening all the drawers of the buffet so I think we will have to pass. Some people are so weird.

Take care before you buy any piece that may have mildewed, such as the piece in the basement. I bought a lovely, quite large sideboard from an antique dealer 25 years ago. I was young and didn't know better and thought the smell would go away.

For the past 25 years it has had a musty smell that I cannot get rid of. I've tried everything from stuffing it with newspaper to airing it out and letting the drawers sit in sunshine for several days, to aquarium charcoal. It is UNUSABLE because of the smell. Anything I store in it takes up the mildew smell. Although it would be perfect for linens, I can't use it for that because of the smell. Right now I am using it to store batteries, DH's shoe polish, and similar things that won't take up the smell.

Seems like the shoe polish would do the trick! :)

Have you tried putting a cut up apple in the piece?

lyban - That's a shame. The set looked to be beautiful at one time. Those people should be ashamed!

I would offer them $500.....it's really a very very lovely set whether the chairs are original to the set or replacements.....and at $500 a steal....tiy could sell it easily if you didn't like the looks of it.
Go back....offer $500 and be prepared to give $650 and don't give him a check until it's out where you can see it...
