Help with awkward living room dimensions

tadhg555

We are looking to redecorate our living room, but are faced with some challenges:

1. It's a long, narrow room (12'x23', approx).

2. The awkward relationship between the fireplace and the entryway makes it difficult to establish a clear center of focus.

3. There are built-in bookshelves along the far wall.

4. There's only one wall long enough to place a sofa.

We are completely open to any type of furniture--sectionals, curved sofas, armchairs, love seats, etc. The only current piece we plan to keep is a Morris chair with a foot stool. We do not have a television in this room - it will be used for entertaining, conversation and reading. We want it to be a welcoming space. We'd also like the furniture to break the strong vertical lines created by the dimensions already (i.e., break the tunnel feeling).

I can try to post a photo soon, but for now I have created a rough drawing of the dimensions of the room.

Any and all help would be appreciated - we want this to be our home for the long term and really hope to create a space we can love!

Thanks in advance.
