My old room was very similar, but we had large windows where your FP is.

The place I liked the sofa the best was on the far short wall, with an end table/lamp on each side.

We had two large chair's opposite the "FP/windows".

On the short wall next to your entry that's where we had our TV flanked by bookcases.

At one time we only had a loveseat and we had it jutting out in the room as you walk in the front door. It faced the far short wall. I loved it because it gave me a chance to place other furniture the way I liked it.

Thanks, justgotabme. I like it -- do you think there's room for the sofa? I'd be worried that it would block access if placed in the center of the room. How close to the fireplace would you put it?

I agree with justgottabeme, create three zones in the room.

I do think you can play around with what to put in front of the fireplace. You might be able to do the 4 armchairs around a round table/ottoman thing there. Or flank the fireplace with two loveseats. Or one loveseat and two chairs. Or face a small sofa towards the fireplace and put a chair at right angles at either end.

My living room is very similar, 12 x 25. My entryway is closer to the corner, and built-ins flank the fireplace.

Different, yet harmonious rugs break up the tunnel (facing different directions helps too, I think). The front third has a smaller rug, running away from the entry, a piano and a round table centered on the rug. It can look nice but people just throw stuff on it.

The center of the room has the larger rug, the FP flanked by armchairs placed away from the built-ins. Sofa facing FP, but not centered. Rug is not quite centered either. Does not bother me. My problem area is the back third, a corner filled with windows and a corner with a small TV that is hard to see.

I am imagining that your room is somewhat formal like mine? With all the windows, I can't imagine a den-like room. I am seeing 2 loveseats perpendicular to the FP, facing each other, small table in between. With a rectangular table on the wall facing the FP, with 2 small chairs on either side.

The back third would be good for some floor/reading lamps and comfy armchairs - more a private space. A round game table and small chairs would be useful, for cards or puzzles or what you like to do.

I have an extremely similar room.

The classic configuration would be a sofa facing the FP with two flanking chairs that match each other, facing each other. Your entry door makes that a little tough, but in my LR I "cheated" the sofa a little down toward the FP end of the room, and no one would notice. In my case I used a loveseat against the bottom wall, instead of a chair there, because I recovered a piece I already had.

If you are going contemporary, I have seen L-shaped sectionals in rooms like this, with the long bit against the the long wall and the chaise against the bottom wall. This arrangement seems to work.

I agree that two loveseats facing each other would look nice but frankly I don't think the room is wide enough for that, once you get tables, lamps, etc.

The top part can be outfitted with a games table, but I would use two chairs facing into the room or each other, rather than four. There isn't enough room for a card party up there.

I took out my built-ins and I'm glad; I was able to put strong floor to ceiling drapery panels there instead.

Okay here's a drawing of furniture placement. You'd have to get exact measurements first before you buy anything or use what you have, but if the scale is right on your floor plan this could work with the right sized furniture.

Our sunroom is similar in size (3 ft sorter) with one wall full of windows, one half filled with french doors, the third with two large openings (five foot and twelve foot) and the fourth wall has a door to a half bath with enough room for a buffet/hutch and pagoda etagere on either side of the door. I love rooms with challenges like this.

justgotabeme is right on. The only thing I would suggest differently is to move the pair of chairs a bit closer to the sofa to create more of a conversation area. If there's not a window seat between the bookcases, you might consider one.

And then - your lighting. If you have a game table, you will need a ceiling fixture. You will also need a table & lamp between the pair of chairs. Also consider light sconces flanking the fireplace. Lighting makes all the difference.

Curious to know what the plans are for color, etc. Keep us posted.
