I need help decorating my large, awkward living room. Here is how the previous tenants decorated (which looks very sad to me). I don’t know where to put the tv without closing off/abandoning the fireplace area. I don’t know what kind of sofas/sectionals would work best.

A couple of questions. How many people do you need to seat in the living room on an average day? Do you need a full-length sofa or could you get by with a smaller loveseat? (In other words, does someone in the family like to lounge full-length on the sofa while watching TV?) I'm guessing the TV is in the cabinet opposite the fireplace. Can it be moved anywhere else in the room? Right now you have two focal points at opposite ends of the room--the TV and the fireplace. And none of your furniture faces either one. If at all possible, I'd move the TV down closer to the fireplace. Right now, the fireplace is kind of ignored and seems out of place in the room. Is there room for the TV to the right of the fireplace? Then I'd swing the sofa around to face the fireplace and TV. Either have the loveseat at right angles to it to make an "L" shaped conversation area, or have two armchairs, maybe swivel ones, one on either side of the sofa. Move the cat tree to in front of the half of the sliding door you don't use, and put a bird feeder right outside the door. That way, the cats will be able to lounge as they watch their "kitty TV." Then use the end of the room where the TV cabinet currently is for a desk and the computer and maybe a bookcase for storage. Or you could put the curio cabinet there.

well, here's an example of floating the furniture if you want to get off the back wall: But, I don't think this is necessary with your layout. as grover mentioned, play around with what you have and see what looks best. In the meantime, pick a sofa and an area rug that you want. Then you can build off of that. right now everything in there is so neutral. Look at these rooms I've posted below. Some have a bold color velvet sofa, and some have a bit more leather and black/white. You say you don't know how to do color. So pick a color that you like and work it into an area rug, artwork, pillows and / or the sofa. the rich navy blue velvet is gorgeous with gray, wood flooring and other neutral textiles and camel colored leather so is a deep, forest green this one is pretty neutral except for the rug. every thing else is minimal and neutral This would look so nice w/your wood flooring, the warm colors in the rug, wood slat table, linen-type sofa, leather poufs would also work here. and notice the art work. It all just works together

Ask yourself the following questions and you may find the solution. Which view makes you happiest, looking at the fireplace or out your gorgeous window? Is the piano played on a regular basis? Is it necessary for the desk to be located in this room? Are you willing to close off one of entry ways into the room? (I would choose to close the one closest to the entry door). My thought is to continue to have the couch and two chairs facing one another, however give them a quarter turn so their bacsk are to the windows.

I can understand why you would want two sectionals. It makes sense with the tv above the fireplace. I think any seating you put directly across from the tv would be a strain to look up at for any length of time (unless you get a reclining couch/sectional). @Beverly s idea to open the room would solve many problems if the space above isn't being used. Otherwise I might try to leave the sectional ends open to each other so one side isn't rejecting the other. Or give the left side some light armchairs that can be moved around the space when needed

So I’m not sure what you are asking…looks like you solved the issue by furnishing the former owner’s tv area as a dining area and the fireplace as your living room.

I'd alter the fireplace surround/mantle and hang the TV above the fireplace

direct seating around the fireplace.

I'd replace that ceiling light, first thing.

Place the TV above the fireplace and the sofa either in front of the windows or as a divider from the dining area.

Thanks everyone - Sorry for being unclear - these photos are old/not mine. The space is currently unfurnished. There is another dining room so I don’t need to break this room into living room and dining room. I was thinking the tv would be too high about the fire place and then I wouldn’t know what to do with the “dining area”

OK, it’s too big for one room, will you do a quick floor plan with measurements? How do you see yourself using the space(s)? It really looks like it should be a dining room and living room, but if there is another dining room that functions well, let’s do away with the redundancy. Do you need a home office space, or do you have kids who would like a homework area? Or is it too open and noisy for that?

Oh..ok..so to treat the whole space as a living room with 2 seating areas, place 2 sofas back-to-back…the one on the TV side with a chaise end and the one on the fireplace side—a regular sofa with two chairs across from it, with end tables fit in where needed.

Get a piece of paper and draw out the dimensions of the room, then post a picture. The people on these boards are amazingly helpful when given more information.

You have plenty of room so there’s no need to mount the tv over the fireplace. We bought this house which has a very large living room and a 6’ tall fireplace. DH assumed we would mount a giant tv over the fireplace and buy a sectional with recliners to face it. I was quick to say that there was 0% chance of either of those things happening. This isn’t a movie theatre. 🙄

You have the space to keep the tv separate from the fireplace wall. Most mounted-over-the-fireplace televisions are too high and will create neck pain. Lower, and over a nice console, is better.
