Okay, another "mystery chair" for someone to identify...

This is a swivel recliner purchased from a small Portland, Oregon family-owned furniture shop which specialized in contemporary furniture (apparently as a labor of love) that was having a closing-business-for-retirement sale 23 years ago.

I just happened to come across the store, walked in, saw the recliner, loved it, and bought it on the spot. It is a nice, clean, rather unique design, but I don't recall if it ever came with any manufacturer's information. It was strictly cash-and-carry that day.

As you can see, one armrest is currently not on the chair right now because someone sat on it (!) and broke it, but I plan to fix and replace it.

The chair is made up of flat wood (probably MDF) panels with a thin leather cushion that runs the entire length. The hardware that enables the reclining action is minimalistic, cool in operation, and probably custom to the chair.

I think it's a very nice clean, contemporary interpretation of a swivel recliner but I have searched all over (and under) the chair and can find no designer or manufacturer's identifying information.

Any ideas?

Can't tell you anything about it, but I love it! It is a spectacular chair and I would have snapped it up, too, if I had seen it! Great find.

If I remember correctly, there were TWO of these for sale when I walked into the store that fateful Saturday many years ago. I probably couldn't afford two of them then, and what would I do with a second identical chair anyway? However now, it "might" have been nice to have two of them, just because they're so rare - but they really don't work as well in pairs as, say, two Barcelona chairs...;-)

BTW, it may not look it in the photos but even with the flat panel design, this swivel recliner is very comfortable in both the upright and reclined positions. Undoubtedly the full-length padded leather cushion does help, but I think the designer got it "just right" in the dimensions - at least for me, that is. ;-D

Here's a head-on shot. Hmmm, maybe I should remove the remaining arm and just make it the ultimate in minimalistic swivel recliners?...

Okay...back again. The succulent I found that is closest to looking like yours is Portulaca molokiniensis. I have no personal experience with this plant & have never seen it in person, so I cannot vouch for the veining in the leaves being the same. But...take a look at the links below & see what you think. If/when it blooms, you could confirm. Well, double drats..... Back to the drawing board. Jenna, and everyone on the trail of this identity crisis, I have run out of ideas. Based on what I purchased, and what I'm seeing, I am totally stumped. This is the only plant with a green middle and a yellow/gold/cream border that I own. With corrugation especially. I think both 'Brother Stefan' and 'Dick Ward,' the two with light centers and green/blue margins, are the only other variegateds except for the ones with white margins and a crisp green middle. Besides the ones which are a solid color, that is. Well, I could have been shipped a different plant. And I posted the closeup of the leaf, as wrinkled as it is, to give someone a shot at counting the vein pairs. I've counted v.p. a total of two times, not exactly the expert level. But according to Zilis, the v.p. count and the color of the bloom is frequently the deciding factor in identification. Regardless of the frustration I feel right now, I will not let a brainless plant take me down. I suppose I can always call it 'Madame X' until then. Spartacus? I honestly do not know. But I never BOUGHT a Spartacus. Plant Delights does sell it, although they are sold out at this time. However, the fact that they sell it, means it could be what I got. The description at PDN says it is highly rippled on the edge, and it seems this one is sure rippled. And now I am leaning more toward that name. Jennaj, it sounds possible. I'll see if I can count v.p. to confirm. Gesila, thanks. I am pleased by the plants I found at Seawright's, even this late in the season. I chose smaller tops with a lot of stems in the ground, bushy leaves, seeking to give the plant a lot to absorb for its winter dormancy. And today I picked up some bonemeal to mix into the potting soil I'll move the ground-planted plants into as well. I got potting soil with no moisture retention additives. Now it is time to go do some digging before it rains tomorrow.

It's the weekend, so I can get back on the web. Thanks for everyone's answers, so far! I'm going to print them out and put them in my garden notebook, as soon as I start one Our house is older, so I've inherited whatever anyone else planted. There are just kind of plain landscaping evergreens in the front yard, and a straight walkway. Since major projects are OUT this summer, I've decided to soften the lines of that with some astilbe. I love flowing, feathery plants. Plants I have: Lily of the Valley (like everyone else on here, I guess. As we just moved, I'm going to have to try to trade what I have; someone maybe wants some...somewhere in Upstate NY!!), lots of forget-me-nots right now, and although they're spreading, I love their misty blue-and-white look. Lots of lambs ear, going to dig some of that, too. I have the unnamed roses that someone mentioned, too! I'm going to dig them; I think they're tea roses, and I really don't want to do any spraying, and I hate seeing plants get totally eaten up. Maybe someone will want some of these, too. I have three gigantic and healthy bleeding hearts (two pink, 1 white) that will do just fine where they are. Other than that, there are many things that I can't identify just by their leaves, so I'll have to wait and see. There's some wispy, deep purple spider shaped perennial that just bloomed. I like them, but don't know what they are. Anyone have recommendations for good plant identifying books or other sources? I found Pippi's Perennials at the Regional Market; she's very easy to talk to, and gives lots of information, so every payday, I plan to go and find some more stuff, in addition to my wintersown seedlings that are coming along. Carolyn in Jordan, who has done enough housework, and REALLY wants to get outside!

Texasranger, thank you!! It is so beautiful. I now have dozens of them growing in my yard, blue and white. Apparently the seeds must've blown out of the wildflower garden after I sowed them because they're growing in the wildflower garden AND the front yard, other garden beds, etc. I'm happy about it, though.. they're very romantic and interesting.. hence, the name, I suppose.. "love in a mist." I looked it up online and this is definitely what it is. A few of them have "died" and formed the big, swollen seed pods now.. those are beautiful looking, too. I will have to research when seed pod is ready to break open, or if it'll do so on it's own. What do you mean by "old fashioned annual?"

Thanks for the link. As they say, "close but no cigar" - it has a similar appearance, kind of like the "second cousin" version which has added on a few pounds over the years.

Accounting for inflation over the years, the price of that chair you linked to is probably in the same high-rent neighborhood my swivel recliner was in two decades ago.

Still wish I knew the name....maybe I might come across the 23-year old receipt when cleaning up, LOL!

I'm intrigued by your chair so I did a little surfing to see what I could find. Nada. However, I did notice that every time I Googled for anything with "recliner" in the title, I got a lot of images of nude paintings. Nevertheless, I found a page with some very interesting chairs I thought you might like to look at.

You chair is also reminiscent of the Rolf Benz 577

Thanks for the try, bbstx - yes, the Rolf Benz 577 is "similar," kind of a derivation, but I have to say, I still like my recliner best (one arm or two!).

I am glad I did make the on-the-spur decision to buy the recliner when I did. I hesitated for a moment, thinking I'd better confer with my better half first and maybe come back the following week, but I'm glad I just took the plunge.

Otherwise, I would be forever kicking myself to this day, lamenting "the one that got away."

I think when faced with "art," you just have to go with your gut. Fewer regrets when purchasing something and having second thoughts about it later, than hesitating and missing the chance - a chance that in many respects could quite turn out to have been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
