Are you a good mom or a bad mom?

I posted this on the Parents Forum, but thought I'd put it here too in case people here didn't get a chance to check it out. This quiz really made me laugh!

Everything I do and don't do makes me feel like a bad mom.

For instance, if I work with DS on his spelling words, I feel like a bad mom because I'm not giving him any relaxation (down) time. If I don't work with him on his spelling words, I feel like a bad mom because he fails his spelling test or doesn't get a good grade.

If I have him do chores, I'm a bad mom because I'm making him put off creative things that he wants to do. On the other hand, if I don't make him do chores, he's not learning responsibility.

If I stay home with him, we don't have any money. If I go to work, we don't have any time together.

If I let him stay up past bedtime to spend time with me, I'm a bad mom because he's not getting enough rest. If I make him go to bed on time, I'm a bad mom because I'm not spending quality time with him.

I divorced his dad because he was violent and cheated. So I'm a bad mom because I took his dad away. If I would've stayed, I would've been a bad mom for letting my kid be in that abusive situation.

As far as FSD goes, I'm a bad FSM if I don't buy her what she wants. If I do buy her what she wants, I'm a bad FSM because I'm indulging and already over-indulged kid and teaching her to be materialistic.

Oh Emerald sounds about as happy as Chico! It was one of those stupid things where there was one layer inside the bulb that was black! That's why cleaning up a bulb makes me nervous when you clean up the neck and you see one dark layer. Are we just getting poorer bulbs? This happened to me with new bulbs this year too. Melusine was only 1 year old and never did much, so I'm guessing that this could have been the problem from Day 1. Sigh...it's hard to figure out what you can't see, that's why I cut her. The bulb seemed solid, but when I gave a gentle squeeze, liquid bubbled from the top. I had visions of her being rotten to the core. It was actually a lot better than I imagined and the 4 pieces are pretty big and just less a few layers. K

Thank you for that prayer, Toni! It was lovely! Happy Mothers day to all of our Mothers in fact, Mothers in waiting and Spiritual Mothers, and even to our male "moms". You are all very precious and very appreciated! Giving birth to a child does not make one a mother, it is love, attention, caring and devotion that does that. Being a mother is holding them close when they hurt or are fearful, laughing and crying with them, knowing when to let go and knowing how to let them come home again, even if just for a few minutes. It is support, cheerleading, playing the 'bad guy' when needed, encouraging them to grow, and try new things, even when all we want to do is keep them close. It is accepting the decisions they make for their lives, not grudgingly, but with love and understanding, even when those choices are not ones we would have made for them. It is loving where they love... and standing back and not getting in the middle. It is giving our opinion, then stepping back to let them be the person they choose to be. And it's even standing to the side and letting them deal with the consequences, good or bad, of the decisions they make. It is being there for them, even if the consequences are deserved. I think you're doing pretty good if you're just now starting to feel like a bad mom, Britta! I've had a great case of mommy-guilt (97% self-inflicted, of course) since I went back to work after kid #1 eight years ago! Can't tell you how many times I went to grocery store at 10:30 pm the night before to pick up cupcakes from the bakery (you know, the WAAAAAAY over done kind with 2 inches of fluff frosting that's been "frosting spray-painted" and then dusted with those sugar sprinkle-things? - no way anyone's even going to think I MADE those things!!!). Of course, I do try to home-bake the necessary stuff as much as I can, but sometimes daughter doesn't give much warning that she needs a snack/whatever to take to school: Apparently teacher appreciation is going on this week at her school. There's a "theme" for each day. "Goodies" was yesterday, all I had to send was stale vanilla wafers! Needless to say, she went sans cookies - I rationalized this by saying that the teachers didn't need a horde of "goodies" anymore than I did! However, today they were supposed to take a "sweet smelling" gift (this crazy present-fest goes on for a WHOLE WEEK!!! Imagine!) and so I made good by getting a nice basket from Bath & Body.... Oh, I could go on, but hey - I'm mostly just happy that everyone is wearing (semi) clean clothes, has brushed hair/teeth, and clean faces/hands. If we can do that everyday, it's been a success! Try to laugh at myself often. (Remember, I'm just double-wide trailer trash, after all!)

Only thing ugly is the name, "mom cave". Like cougar. Over both, strike them from popular slang! Agree with the others, think about what you need space for. We have a spare bedroom we use as an exercise room and another as an ofice, but I wish I had one more space for...lets call it hobbies. I love to read, gift wrap, do photography and framing, a little sewing now and then, always saving clipping for decorating, cooking and travel inspiration, and think about "taking up" other hobbies if I had room. Instead a little goes in a closet here and there, a shelf, garage or clippings tossed in a bag hidden in a closet until I get to organize...which is never. A room to organize all that, have book shelves, a comfy reading clair and a table for sewing, crafts, wrapping, fit extra clothes, would be awesome! Then I could close the door when it's a mess! I'd even share it with the exercise stuff if I had a big enough room. Alas, here in S CA we don't have basements. Bummer. Any space hogging hobbies worthy of that space? However don't get too comfy in there since the kids will probably want it back when they're teens. Can't imagine entertaining girlfriends in a spare room upstairs. Isn't that what all the other home living spaces are for. Hubby in his man cave, you in yours and kids running the aslyum? However... you might need it if you do decide to go for the Barbie Miss Kitty Funhouse, I mean you and the cougars gotta have a place to install the stripper pole!! :>) Barbie, Miss Kitty, Engineer Chic that comment cracked me up!

Yeash Ashley! That is exactly what I struggle with everyday. Most of the time I walk around feeling like a failure. That's why I googled "are you a good mom" and this is what came up. It put a little levity in my life!

Pretty much being a good dad is showing up. Not to demean the importance of dads or the effort they put in, and some are better than others, but there's a pretty much 75% chance (not scientific, just my opinion!) that a man who is there for his kids will be considered by others and himself to be a good dad.

Why doesn't that translate over to women? Or is this just my crazy thinking?

hahahah I answered in all seriousness just to find it was a joke. hahah I am the most horrible mom out there. oh it is too funny, but so true. and i so agree good dad is the one who is there, no matter what he does in terms of raising a kid as long as he is in kids life it is good enough. does not work this way with women.

I feel like an AWFUL Mom most of the time! My DS 7 goes to a private Christian School where the majority of the moms are SAHMs and parents are expected to volunteer a LOT. (Most of them are married to rich doctors and remind me of the 2 SAHMs on "The Adventures of Old Christine" if you watch that show! If you don't, they're VERY uptight and clique-ish, drive around their Mercedes and spend a lot of time planning where they are going to "lunch.") I almost never volunteer for anything b/c they schedule the parent stuff DURING THE WORKDAY and I am a professional who works 50+ hours a week, usually eat lunch at my desk, so I can't get away between 8 and 5:30. (I could easily be there at 5:30-6:00 p.m. but the SAHMs who run everything want to be home with their families then, so I don't get the opportunity.) I'm NOT trying to start a WAR w/ SAHMs here, whom I admire GREATLY, since I would pull my hair out if I had to be home with my 17 mo old every day (LOL!), just adding what makes me feel like a bad mom.

What is up with that Molly? It's the same at my DD's school. Everything is scheduled in the work day. That's not how it was when I was in school! I joined the PTA, only to find that it met at 8:30 in the morning. Excuse me? I have no volunteer opportunities at all, which really makes me sad because I want to be involved.

I find it interesting that when a woman is raising her children alone, no biggie.
If the father has custody, well "Oh, isn't he just the best! He's raising them ALL by himself"!
Say what? I've asked people what they actually mean with that implication...he's doing his job.

No kidding Deborah. No dis to all the dads who are raising their children, because I think it's great when a parent steps up to the plate....

BUT...

Everyone in my family feels sorry for my ex. Poor him. He's had such a hard time of it after the divorce. boo-hoo.

Excuse me? He was mr. party man, doing as he liked, while I took care of our child, went to school, worked, cleaned, etc. After I left him I had our child, had to work and deal with my emotions and deal with my child's emotions, move... etc... He had the luxury of falling apart and not working for 9 months...

Poor, poor him. He's had it so tough. I really feel sorry for him. And he's "such a good dad". HUH???? Because a good dad cheats on the mother of his child. A good dad does other unspeakable things around his child. Yup. He must be a good dad!!! Why? Because he's BREATHING!!!!

Sorry, just a little vent!
