Are you a good mom or a bad mom?

I posted this on the Parents Forum, but thought I'd put it here too in case people here didn't get a chance to check it out. This quiz really made me laugh!

Everything I do and don't do makes me feel like a bad mom.

For instance, if I work with DS on his spelling words, I feel like a bad mom because I'm not giving him any relaxation (down) time. If I don't work with him on his spelling words, I feel like a bad mom because he fails his spelling test or doesn't get a good grade.

If I have him do chores, I'm a bad mom because I'm making him put off creative things that he wants to do. On the other hand, if I don't make him do chores, he's not learning responsibility.

If I stay home with him, we don't have any money. If I go to work, we don't have any time together.

If I let him stay up past bedtime to spend time with me, I'm a bad mom because he's not getting enough rest. If I make him go to bed on time, I'm a bad mom because I'm not spending quality time with him.

I divorced his dad because he was violent and cheated. So I'm a bad mom because I took his dad away. If I would've stayed, I would've been a bad mom for letting my kid be in that abusive situation.

As far as FSD goes, I'm a bad FSM if I don't buy her what she wants. If I do buy her what she wants, I'm a bad FSM because I'm indulging and already over-indulged kid and teaching her to be materialistic.

I don't know who she is - other than a mom and obviously a comedian or maybe a motivational speaker. The radio station I listen to actually played this today (KLTY). A dad called into the station and sounded like he was begging them to play it. I got the link from a website called It's Good to be the Queen - for moms of all boys. Linda Ford, who operates the website sends a weekly e-mail newsletter and this was in her newsletter.

I think you're doing pretty good if you're just now starting to feel like a bad mom, Britta! I've had a great case of mommy-guilt (97% self-inflicted, of course) since I went back to work after kid #1 eight years ago! Can't tell you how many times I went to grocery store at 10:30 pm the night before to pick up cupcakes from the bakery (you know, the WAAAAAAY over done kind with 2 inches of fluff frosting that's been "frosting spray-painted" and then dusted with those sugar sprinkle-things? - no way anyone's even going to think I MADE those things!!!). Of course, I do try to home-bake the necessary stuff as much as I can, but sometimes daughter doesn't give much warning that she needs a snack/whatever to take to school: Apparently teacher appreciation is going on this week at her school. There's a "theme" for each day. "Goodies" was yesterday, all I had to send was stale vanilla wafers! Needless to say, she went sans cookies - I rationalized this by saying that the teachers didn't need a horde of "goodies" anymore than I did! However, today they were supposed to take a "sweet smelling" gift (this crazy present-fest goes on for a WHOLE WEEK!!! Imagine!) and so I made good by getting a nice basket from Bath & Body.... Oh, I could go on, but hey - I'm mostly just happy that everyone is wearing (semi) clean clothes, has brushed hair/teeth, and clean faces/hands. If we can do that everyday, it's been a success! Try to laugh at myself often. (Remember, I'm just double-wide trailer trash, after all!)

Are you a stay-at-home mom? Yes If so, a) what age was your child(ren) when you began to stay home with them? since birth. I graduated nsg school 6 days before she was born but I've never put it to use YET why do you chose to stay home with your children? I find being at home keeps me very busy & fulfilled. I've never understood SAHM who claim they are bored. I have 1 daughter, 3 dogs, a home & my husband's business I do much of the work for plus I made sure to start involving myself & my daughter in school & plenty of activities. Gosh if I never have to work I would be so happy BUT chances are that when the last of my kids is in fulltme school I'll at last work part-time. are you financially secure enough to be home and not work? Like everyone else we could always use the extra $. We don't have a retirement a/c set up, we have to buy our own very expensive health ins., we havn't been on a great vacation in several yrs, we no longer go to fancy dinners, our home could use allot more remodeling, our cars are old but in good condition & paid for & I am always comparison shopping BUT we have no debt despite every month praising when we've paid the last bills. Our daughter is in private school & already takes 4 sets of lessons at age 3 & when we have our day trips or do happen to go out we truly go all out & enjoy, plus since I have no family help at all I have been lucky enough to be able to pay for a mothers helper or sitter for those times I need to catch up on the home, errands or the business paperwork or go to my many medical appts (I was diagnosed with MS a yr ago). All in all I'm happy, but my husband is self employed & he'd like to make a switch right now & he can't b/c we don't have enough $ in the bank nor another income. I had a stay at home Mom when I grew up & feel there is nothing better. I think that while kids are young I prefer being aorund for safety & to be involved in all the firsts, then they start activities & who else is going to chaperone them everywhere & then later on I want to be around so they have support & hopefully I can prevent them from making some bad choices that they might make had they not had any parent at home during the day after school. what are the ages and gender of your kids? daughter age 3 & working on #2 Michie

My parents were married for 25 yrs when they divorced. Their marriage didn't come first at all. I don't know that even us kids came first...LOL. My mother has not re-married, but my father has. I have been on both sides of the fence with step-families. I was an adult when my father remarried. I have taken my approach with my SS's from what I have learned as a child of divorce, and from the mistakes his wife has made. 1. The marriage to my DH is of equal importance as his children. 2. The children need one on one time with their father regardless of how good our relationship is as a family. Whether intact or not, children need one on one time with each parent. 3. If anything were to happen to my DH, the chilren will recieve all monies from his life insurance policy, any items of his that they want, etc. It has been made clear to me and my siblings that we are not welcome to a personal relationship with our father. We are allowed to have one with him AND his wife (which is fine, but sometimes you need one on one with your parents) When I got married the first time, my father was dating his now wife. He brought her to my wedding. That was the first time I met her. They had come from out of state (about 1,000 miles) to our wedding. I welcomed her openly. She was awful. Very rude to my brothers, my mother, and disrespectful to my grandparents. She made it clear that she didn't feel that I was old enough to get married, and that she would never allow her daughter (same age as me) to get married. (I was young...21) Six months later, her daughter married a meth addict. Nice.... Anyway, over the years she's pulled some pretty crazy stuff. Alienating one of my brothers totally, and pi$$ing of the rest of us. Here's the thing. I still invite her to all family functions becuase she's my fathers wife. I remarried a while back, and she was invited to the wedding, and she sat with my in-laws, etc. I would never dream of treating her with any disrespect. I don't have to like what she does, but she is my father's wife, and that is the choice he made. My relationship with my father isn't what it use to be, and that's pretty sad, but that is his choice. I love him regardless. So, understanding both side of things, my goal is to foster a positive, fulfulling relationship between my DH and SS's. They all deserve it. What's funny, is that my DH would never allow me (or anyone else for that matter) to come between him and his kids. Nor would he allow my SS's to be disrespectful to me. I've been lucky, my SS's are very good to me. I don't know what I'd do if they weren't. I know I'd be crushed. I just don't think it's ever OK to exclude a bio OR step parent. When my SS had his 12th b-day party, he was mad at his mother still (he had moved in with us a yr before)and I told him "you invite your Mom, or no party...period". He got the message. We're teaching him tolerance. It can go a long way, just like manners.

Yeash Ashley! That is exactly what I struggle with everyday. Most of the time I walk around feeling like a failure. That's why I googled "are you a good mom" and this is what came up. It put a little levity in my life!

Pretty much being a good dad is showing up. Not to demean the importance of dads or the effort they put in, and some are better than others, but there's a pretty much 75% chance (not scientific, just my opinion!) that a man who is there for his kids will be considered by others and himself to be a good dad.

Why doesn't that translate over to women? Or is this just my crazy thinking?

hahahah I answered in all seriousness just to find it was a joke. hahah I am the most horrible mom out there. oh it is too funny, but so true. and i so agree good dad is the one who is there, no matter what he does in terms of raising a kid as long as he is in kids life it is good enough. does not work this way with women.

I feel like an AWFUL Mom most of the time! My DS 7 goes to a private Christian School where the majority of the moms are SAHMs and parents are expected to volunteer a LOT. (Most of them are married to rich doctors and remind me of the 2 SAHMs on "The Adventures of Old Christine" if you watch that show! If you don't, they're VERY uptight and clique-ish, drive around their Mercedes and spend a lot of time planning where they are going to "lunch.") I almost never volunteer for anything b/c they schedule the parent stuff DURING THE WORKDAY and I am a professional who works 50+ hours a week, usually eat lunch at my desk, so I can't get away between 8 and 5:30. (I could easily be there at 5:30-6:00 p.m. but the SAHMs who run everything want to be home with their families then, so I don't get the opportunity.) I'm NOT trying to start a WAR w/ SAHMs here, whom I admire GREATLY, since I would pull my hair out if I had to be home with my 17 mo old every day (LOL!), just adding what makes me feel like a bad mom.

What is up with that Molly? It's the same at my DD's school. Everything is scheduled in the work day. That's not how it was when I was in school! I joined the PTA, only to find that it met at 8:30 in the morning. Excuse me? I have no volunteer opportunities at all, which really makes me sad because I want to be involved.

I find it interesting that when a woman is raising her children alone, no biggie.
If the father has custody, well "Oh, isn't he just the best! He's raising them ALL by himself"!
Say what? I've asked people what they actually mean with that implication...he's doing his job.

No kidding Deborah. No dis to all the dads who are raising their children, because I think it's great when a parent steps up to the plate....

BUT...

Everyone in my family feels sorry for my ex. Poor him. He's had such a hard time of it after the divorce. boo-hoo.

Excuse me? He was mr. party man, doing as he liked, while I took care of our child, went to school, worked, cleaned, etc. After I left him I had our child, had to work and deal with my emotions and deal with my child's emotions, move... etc... He had the luxury of falling apart and not working for 9 months...

Poor, poor him. He's had it so tough. I really feel sorry for him. And he's "such a good dad". HUH???? Because a good dad cheats on the mother of his child. A good dad does other unspeakable things around his child. Yup. He must be a good dad!!! Why? Because he's BREATHING!!!!

Sorry, just a little vent!
