Where to find 5.5 inch floor mouldings?

We recently ripped down all the 5.5 moulding in our living room, repainted the whole room, leaving the area where the moulding would hide it unfinished (not spackled etc). Now I cant find 5.5 inch base moulding anywhere. We have both a home depot and a lowes in the area but I have not been able to find larger than 5.25 inch baseboards on the shelves. Does this size typically have to be special ordered? What if I wanted 7 inch baseboards? Where can I find those? Any suggestions, websites or information would be appreciated! Thanks!

Mine is built up from two parts: a piece of flat stock with panel molding on the top edge.

Try looking up lumber yards in your town. We have a couple of lumber companies that have a good selection of base molding, you may have the same too!

Wow birkie thanks for that ! It looks like a couple Akarum cabs might work out just great. I'm going to head into the local IKEA this weekend to get some cabinet boxes in the sizes I think will work ... if it doesn't, it wasn't an expensive experiment ! Syllabus ... I am jealous of those extra 2 inches you have :-) I don't have a detailed plan for how I'm going to make this work, but I showed the pic to my builder and he grunted and said "Yeah I can do that". I have planned to use a Kohler Memoirs sink, which is attached both to the wall and to either a pedestal or a console. I figure we can rig up some sort of beefy support structure hidden within the cabinet. Now that the bathroom is framed, I am a bit worried that the Memoirs will jut into the room too much (it's 21" deep, and a square sink), so I am considering the Kohler Devonshire, which is 19" deep and rounded at the front. Isn't it funny how plans look OK on paper, but when you actually SEE the room things start to close in on you. LOL.

Exactly. I laughed about the 'junk food quilting' title, because that's probably me. But Fran has a point. How you choose to quilt IS the right way to quilt, once you get past a few basics. If you enjoy whipping out tops when the mood hits you then go for it! If you like the piecing or fabric art and hate the quilting end of it, let somebody else finish it! Quilting is the quintessential folk craft, and folk crafts don't come with rules. It's your baby, and your ballgame. After having spent many countless hours drooling over pictures of antique quilts, and also the prize winning quilts at shows, the common denominator the go across the board as to complexity and style, and there are those of us who enjoy primitive styles (think Gee Bend) as much as those five year projects (and they are awesome and I appreciate them too). To get too Martha Stewart with how a quilt should be made would turn off a lot of prospective quilters. What would I improve? Everything about my quilting, and it's happening gradually as I get more quilts under my belt. I love all my quilts, including the absolutely crude first one I ever made. Given my skills at that time, it's a masterpiece for my ability level and made with so much love, it's got a special place now on my daughter's bed, who quilts much better than I.

Thank you abundantblessings for your post and opinion. I actually like the way the picture looks just where it is since I am less than 5 feet but I was surprised when my neighbor told me he could lean back and hit his head and felt the picture should be moved up. I am going to see where my other friend's head hits who is stopping by tomorrow to see my picture since he is 6 feet tall and maybe that will help me make a decision. My client/friend bought me new hangers that had three small nails the two of them to hold up each side of the picture since the ones that came with the Art.com picture looked not sturdy enough. I will check to see how big the holes it is making are. I really am enjoying having color in the room and can't wait to get a flat screen TV after all my deadlines and professional continuing education classes end since I only have until the end of this year to catch up. I just could not stand living in all beige rooms any longer. . Again thank you! Anyone else with opinions?

Probably need a specialty woodwork store. That's where we had to get most of our our molding/trimwork.

Are you going to have a shoe mold/quarter-round in addition to the baseboards? If so, you might be able to make the 5.25" baseboards work, because the shoe will cover the gap.

We recently removed all of our carpet and installed glue-down cork. We did it the cheater's way by not removing the baseboards. This left big gaps -- huge gaps in some places where the base had been cut away aggressively over time to acommodate different carpets. We looked for the right shoe/quarter-round and none of it was tall enough to cover the biggest of the gaps. The solution? Window stop molding. It was 1-1/4" and did the trick.

If you don't go custom or specialty it's easy to build it up from 3 or more stock pieces from Lowes or Home Depot.

Our home also has that type of moulding. 2 yrs. ago we restored the 2nd floor back to it's original footprint. At one point someone put in dropped ceiling ripping out the tp of all of the dorway trim and throwing it away. Luckily my dad was able to make a tracing and mill the same thing but he wasn't sure. That's when he told us how to build up from standard stock.

Now that I know how easy it is to build up I can't ever imagine living in a house w/ tiny moulding.

Thanks all for the suggestions..I took some of the advice posted and I actually ended up finding a 5.5 moulding at Lowes and added a 3/4 inch shoe to fill the gap. We installed using some shims for now and are waiting to install the shoe until after we refinish our hardwood floors.
