It's a while....SS Update and Question

I haven't posted in a long time, but I do read and gain valuable insight from all of you here.

Last time I posted I vented about my SS and the fact that he didnt seem to have any interest in anything, was graduating HS, and had no plan whatsoever. His only pleasure appears to be video games, which he watches most of every single day.

Well, DH and I basically dragged him through the process of getting into a local 4 year college. He moved into the dorm in September and has 2 roomates. I must admit I was shocked it ever happened. He signed up for core freshman classes. He is taking student loans and the plan for the rest is to be paid partly by us, and partly through him getting "work study". BM is not able to contribute anything. With his portion of the CS gone, I am not sure how she even pays her rent.

OK, so when the first semester bill arrived, DH wanted SS to feel a real investment in his education. When SS called about the bill, DH told him to take out his summer work savings and pay it. It drained his account to $0, but his tuition was fully paid, including housing, for the first semester.

The goal was an on-campus job. He never got one. Claims there werent any (I called and checked and learned otherwise). He also claims he couldnt get one off-campus...even at a fast food joint. He claimed "too much competition from the other students". He goes home to BM on weekends, and watches tv and video games with her all weekend. He visited us once (we are a 4 hour train trip away) for a weekend and didnt bring any study books with him.

First semester is over. He got an A- in a computer class (not sure which one) He got a D in math, C- in history, C- in "personal finance" and a "P" for pass in remedial english. He failed the entrance exam for english 101 so he was required to take this. Not sure if it even counts for college credit.

DH has been saying that SS was "going to be an engineer" and will be admitted to the college's "engineering school" soon. Sadly, the grades to not indicate a chance of that. He is required to have Bs for that to happen.

DH knows about the grades and was not happy, but he interestingly hasnt mentioned it beyond the initial reaction. Another tuition bill is coming due in two weeks. SS has no money. He is using his time off between semester to hang out at BMs house and......play video games.

I recently learned that a student needs a 2.5 or above gpa to get housing the second year. He doesnt have that right now.

My question is this: DH is oddly quiet about the whole thing. He isnt talking about it. He isnt expressing concern, talking contingency plans, or anything. He knows what these grades mean, and doesnt seem to be reacting at all. Is he in denial? Is he glad SS made it through semester one at all and figures there is room for improvement? Is he silently worrying? Does he just figure that the grades can be pulled up and likely that's what will happen? I am just being the normal supportive partner and made the decision not to talk about it unless he brings it up.

SS has never had a GF and doesnt seem to have any friends on campus (I ask him) he doesnt play any sport and hasnt joined any club.

I would appreciate knowing what might be expected in a situation like this, and what the parent, DH, is internally going through?
