'Tole' is the word that describes the type of painting on a piece, whether it's on wood or metal. In this case, the tray and stand are wooden.

I just read the ad again and it's listed as a 'tray with stand', so that tells me that they are two separate pieces! The stand probably folds flat for storage.

red ,they were the perfect sellers. VERY nice couple, fellow dog lovers who enjoyed giving the 2 of mine who came with me lots of attention.

The tray and stand was his mother's and she needs to downsize now. It's old, but just beautiful. I hung it in my 'breakfast nook' in the back of the living room. There was already a wire on the back where she had hung it years ago.

It has a wonderful glow to it, and I will enjoy looking at it there every day for years to come.

My3dogs, that is lovely. How do you hang them on the wall? I have several similar metal trays my mother collected that I'd like to display but not sure how to hang without marring the tray. I used a plate hanger for one wooden tray as you did above but wondering if there's another method. I have a large round painted tray that I rest on the floor in front of the FP but would like to get it on the wall for a better display.
Also, have you had good luck cleaning metal trays without affecting the finish adversely? The round one I have has marks that are visible in certain lights (like the picture below) that I would like to remedy.

memazz, I got lucky with this 'new' one, in that it's wooden, and there was already a wire between 2 tiny eyes on the back of it. I have hung all my others with plate hangers as they are metal. I have read about 'disks' that you can stick onto the back of them that have a hanger built in, but I have read about them coming undone, things falling, and don't trust them.

I start cleaning mine with water, and at times, I have even used a Magic Eraser on the really old ones to get grime off, although I don't want to recommend it, just in case....

I wonder if a light coat of wax, like Butcher's Wax, would even out the finish on your? I love the ones done in metallics, and that is what most of mine are.

Very pretty trays! I have a friend that has a whole wall of them in her home. It's such a beautiful display. Wish I had a photo to share.

According to this definition I found, it says:

ETYMOLOGY:

I just found out that "toile" doesn't mean what I thought it meant . . .all it means is canvas!

'Tole' IS a style or type of painting.

If you go onto eBay for example, and enter 'tole tray', you will see hundreds of them come up. There are also many books on the instruction of tole painting style.

I'll answer your other post with several definitions of 'toile'.

Yes, I've seen them on e-bay, but I don't usually trust e-bay for definitions. I see "tole" on e-bay refer also to objects that are metal but have little decoration, so I didn't think it referred to an actual style of painting.

I also see items described as "Italian tole" which are usually items with metal flowers-- the flowers are painted, but the shape is formed by the metal, so it is really the metal forming the decoration more than the painting.

Beautiful tray, 3 dogs, and a lovely addition to your breakfast nook! I've always loved tole myself, and even took a tole painting class back in the 70's, to learn how to do the correct strokes with the paint to form the flowers or fruit designs so intricately. We used wooden plaques to paint on, and during the early years of marriage, I had these little wooden plaques decorating my kitchen.....sigh, decorating on the cheap! I''ve since forgotten all I learned.

My mother had a lovely tole painted wooden tray, similar to yours in size, with the graceful bird that you see in some of the designs, that I remember well. I guess that's where I learned to appreciate this type of painting. I've been looking for something to dress up my bathroom, and your post inspired me to put in a bid on a small tray that caught my eye......wish me luck!

Shortly after I got the one above, I saw this one on eBay and won it for only $10.49. I look at them as art, so a very inexpensive way to acquire something original. I love raspberries and that is what caught my eye on this one. It arrived yesterday and has some great crackling in the paint due to age, which makes it even better for me!

That's beautiful.....especially love the wheat! I don't recall seeing wheat done on many trays, this alone makes it special to me. Very pretty! Well, being a Maine girl, you must of course love raspberries! We used to find them all the time in the mountains of the Adirondacks, growing wild alongside the road - I'm sure there are plenty of them in those Maine wooded areas, too!!
