I'm concerned they'll both fight your ceiling light fixture ... but of the two, I too prefer the second.

I am really excited about your son's adventure! Shanghai is such an exciting, dynamic and western-friendly city -- it'll be a great introduction to PRC. (In the late '90s I lived and worked in Beijing and traveled all over [well, not all -- it's a big place!] and when I made it to Shanghai felt as if I were in Hong Kong -- it was so occidental & accessible in feel.) I am really envious! What a wonderful gift you are giving him ....

I agree with rmkitchen that neither one seems to do any favors for your existing light fixture. The fixture seems to be saying one thing, the lamps another, and the more modern glass candlesticks still another.

If you are going to hang wall pockets with greenery on either side of the mirror, I am not seeing buffet lamps there as well.

I would prefer to see something along these lines in front of the mirror:

golden capiz 2 arm table lamp

Kswl, I surprised myself recently with the modern candlesticks, I can't believe I really like them since Ilean so heavily towards traditional. LOL

I managed to get about 2 hours of sleep after checking my son's flight status over and over. His plane is now landed and my baby (19) is now in China. We are so very proud of him and excited for him at the same time. He joked with us yesterday that he is going to be a 6 foot 2 guy in a 5 foot 3 world. He is so ready for this adventure and I am so blessed that he has this opportunity. Now to plop the lamps Less chose into my crude photoshopping!

Deborahnj, what a wonderful opportunity for your son! What is he studying, and how did he happen to choose to go to China? As much as we are excited for them when these things happen, it is SO hard to have them so far away!

Just to be clear, I was not suggesting two of the lamps I linked to be put on either side of the sideboard. I meant one, put in front of the mirror on the center, since you are planning to put the wall pockets on either side.

My son is an anthropology major and he wants to be an archeologist. He has been interested in Asian culture since he was a kid. About a month after starting school, he came home one weekend and told me about an international exchange program he was thinking about applying to in China. While I was excited for him, I really thought it was a whim. But he applied, got an early acceptance and the rest is history. It is a really great program for him as he will be studying the language and Asian history. He will also have an opportunity to visit other parts of China. It is a great experience for his field. His next stop for Junior Year, Japan! He took Japanese his freshman year and did really well so he is not intimitated at all with the language issue. This is 10x harder than when he left for college. I really thought was ready but I am having a really difficult time and this is only the 1st day.
