Installing GFCI breaker - no main breaker in panel

I live in a townhouse condominium. I'm planning to have a couple of GFCI breakers installed in my panel for my kitchen - GFCI wasn't required for the kitchen when the house was built. I bought the breakers and a friend was going to do the install for me until he took a look at the panel and noticed that there was no main breaker. He told me to hire a licensed electrician, which I'm planning to do. Rumor has it that there is a main breaker for each house somewhere else in our condominium complex. Do I need to track that down or will a licensed electrician be willing/able to install these breakers in a live panel without shutting off the main breaker? Thanks for your help.
