Instead of the navy blue family for her, what about pink, or turquoise or yellow? What about lime green or orange for both of them? They all work well with navy, and there is no reason the bedding has to match.

After all, she is a 2 year old girl, he is a 10 year old boy. One might expect her to have fun little girl sheets with kitties or butterflies or Dora the Explorer, and him to have camouflage or tie dye.

honestly, it didnt occur to me to move out of the navy family. ds has expressed his desire for blue sheets, but I can probably work with him so long as there is *some* blue in there.
personally, I dont care for little girl sheets with kitties, butterflies or dora, just not my thing. since she's only 2, she doesnt really care one way or the other.
I like the lime green or orange idea...will play with that.

Although she's still a little young, you could always do denim comforters with different colored sheets and blankets or you could use plain sheets for him and eyelet sheets for her.

Bright green sheets for him and bright pink sheets for her with denim comforters might look really cute, for example.

Gran, when my grandson turned two and stated sleeping on a regular bed pillow in his crib, I bought him a set of crib sheets with matching pillow case that has trucks on them.

He'd happily go take a nap and "show me" the trucks. If you put girly sheets on her bed, she will notice.

Have you seen PB bedding for either babies or girls? I bought my GD a pink paisley crib sheet and it's lovely!

oakleyok, I did have a look at potterybarn, they do have pretty things. I'm not opposed to 'girly', but to 'novelty'.
someone bought my 7 yo son a spiderman blanket for his 4th birthday. he loves it. I cringe everytime I make the bed.
our compromise - I keep a duvet cover over it during the day. I cannot stand looking at the thing. so I am not about to go out and buy anything dora if I can help it! baby has some tacky 'princess' pillows (thank you, big sister!) in her crib, which she does love, but right now that's about all I can tolerate.

bird lover- I like the denim/different sheets idea. maybe I can add some denim bows or a small ruffle around the seams on hers (I sew so I was thinking of making my own duvet covers from flat sheets).

Granolamom, I respect your house, your way. But when the kids have so much fun with bedding that expresses their current passion for things, or makes the room feel like their own, why is that such a bad thing to you? They are little for only a short time.

My younger son was wild about construction vehicles (I have NO idea why)and particularly 'the mighty loader' as we all called it. He had bedding that had trucks and cars on it, and LOVED it - in fact, at 20 he still has the tissue box cover on his nightstand, despite having moved on long ago from 'the mighty loader' passion. He keeps it as a fond memory of that room decor - I think it says home and his space to him, even after being away at university.

I guess my point is that it is their room. Just as you choose sheets and bedding that speak to you in your space, shouldn't they have the same opportunity?

Besides, just wait until they are 10 or 12 and up and want posters and other decor that fits their interests! LOL

I relinquished all control in my daughter's room. She picked out the bedding, window seat fabric, wall stickers, rug, blinds and pillow pets when she was three. None of it was what I wanted, especially dislike the 5 pillow pets on the bed, but she loves it, sleeps well in it and is proud of it and wants to keep it neat to show her friends so makes her own bed every am. Ownership and pride are such important traits for young children maybe you could prepick a limited # of choices for each of your children to pick from and let each one express themselves on their side of the room. Worry less about matching and more about encouraging their sense of self. they might even surprise you and the room will turn out whimsical and unique.

ah, its my ocd coupled with my childhood traumas of ratty, mismatched bedding!
my kids decorate their rooms (and our kitchen and playroom) with their drawings, paintings, knick-knacks, etc. they all chose the color of their rooms, and they have assorted pillows/animals etc on their beds (and furniture and floor...). most of which *I* wouldnt choose, but its like you all say, their pride and ownership thing.
for some reason, the 'character' or 'novelty' bedding sets off my gag reflex. my oldest daughter chose a pink toile bedding (most of the house is modern decor), but I can live with that. another one of my sons chose americana-nautical theme in his room, really not my style, but whatever. the fleece spiderman is truly nauseating to me. so ds sleeps with it and loves it and so long as I can cover it up by day so I dont have to see it when I walk into the room, we're all good.
if this becomes the issue my kids discuss in therapy, I'm not doing too bad!
