where to put baby grand piano?
Comments (45)I'm on here trying to figure out what to do with my own piano in my new house. I noticed acm's comment about don't worry which way the lid is pointing--the sound will go everywhere. That is the truth! It is for aesthetics that you want the lid to open to the room. I personally would rather look out the window while I play piano than to look to the people in the room. About the heating register... You don't want the heat being blown on the piano--true! What my Registered Piano Technician told me was to take the register cover off and cover the bottom with plastic wrap to seal it off. As long as you only do this one one register in the house, it should not place too much wear and tear on your furnace....See MoreHelp with small room.and a baby grand
Comments (13)My sister has a 7’ grand. Some how my DBIL figured out how he could get under it on his hands and knees and raise up each leg a little at a time while Sister then slipped a cloth pad of some sort under each leg. After each leg had a pad under it, they could scoot it around without a great deal of effort. In their current house, the piano is upstairs in the bonus room. Movers put it up there without damaging the house or the piano. Nevertheless, my sister could not stand to watch....See MoreHelp us place a Baby Grand Piano in our Living Room
Comments (10)Since the piano will be the star of this space, you need to consider these guidelines to ensure high quality sound and a healthy location for the grand. The visual bulk of the piano with the lid open will be sufficient to replace both of your tall casegoods pieces. A good spot might be to place it diagonally across the corner where the keyboard is now. The lid should open against the corner so the sound will be thrown out in to the room and not against the walls. That might also locate the pianist somewhat under the chandelier, which could be helpful in reading music. With the two tall pieces out of the room, move the sofa and sofa table opposite their current location, and then work on placing the two chairs at the best spots for enjoying the music. Perhaps one could go in the corer with the drop leaf table for a reading/listening spot near the window. The other one Might angle near the hearth or under the sconce near the doorway to the other room You'll have to play with them a bit....See MoreBaby grand in family room
Comments (12)A cautionary tale: When my brother took up the piano, we located it in the family room. It was a big room, which had once been the formal dining room in this older house when it was built, back in the days when there was no such thing as a "family room." The family room was open to the large living room via an archway that was huge so didn't block sight or sound between the rooms. We watched TV in the family room. All did not go well. My brother (who is now a professional piano player) was obsessed with playing the piano. Our house was one of the few among my friends that had rules of when you could NOT play the piano. He used to sneak it in during commercials but always bled over a bit into show time. Finally, my parents couldn't take it anymore, they turned our one car garage into a family room, converted the old family room back into a formal dining room, and kept the outdoor heavy wooden door between the kitchen and the new family room so that we could go in there and watch TV and close off the constant sound of the piano. The folks had wanted a two car garage anyway, which they then added on to the house. We needed at least one place to go and watch TV away from the piano. Now maybe you aren't that obsessive about your piano, but I think that a TV watching space and a piano playing space may have conflicts. How often will probably depend on your lifestyle. We were never big on TV in the bedroom, but at my last house I turned the upstairs guest bedroom into a TV room where someone (not saying who but is initials are DH) could go to watch TV (football in particular) without any disturbance. Again, YMMV on this but I was lucky I could do that at my last house. Our current home is "open concept" and it makes it much harder, particularly now with hubs giant screen TV taking up so much real-estate in the family room and it being open to so much of the rest of the house. I now retreat to the master bedroom in the back of the house for quiet, I have an office niche in there . . ....See MoreArlingtonVAremodel
