Baby grand in family room

Hi, we are looking at purchasing a home that doesn’t have a formal living room, so my baby grand would have to go in the main great room. I’m curious if anyone has any photos of their piano in the main living space. My piano is very important to us, and we play quite a bit. Not sure if this home is the right one, but it checks all of our boxes except for the piano space.

I’m attaching a photo of the great room, and we would think about putting the piano where the Christmas tree is in this photo. Obviously not our furniture…

IME, baby grands take up more floor space than the average Christmas tree. If you usually have only two or three people in your living room area, it might fit. If you have more than that, the baby grand will likely be too big for the space.

If this space does not need to be a tv room, I would take the opportunity to create a music/library space. Do a wall of built in bookshelves where the accent wall is and get four super comfy club chairs in either leather or velvet, a couple of ottomans, and a couple of end tables. You could group all four together in the middle of the space, or do two groupings, one closer to the piano.

We need pics of your space .I think it can work some of the issues I would have are the sound in a loft space These are 2 pics I found so doable , good I am not so sure. Maybe try a stereo up there to see how the sound is before moving the baby grand up the stairs which will need a piano mover BTW

Unless the room is way larger than shown, an 8'x10' rug with the piano and bench fully resting on it, would work well for that size room. I like the general placement as the light will be to the player's back (helping to light the sheet music). When the lid is raised, the sound will be directed correctly. To give people a little more room to traverse the space, consider situating the piano a foot or so closer to the wall (where the bear is currently) and a foot or so closer to the window. The angle is great.

My sister has a 7’ grand. Some how my DBIL figured out how he could get under it on his hands and knees and raise up each leg a little at a time while Sister then slipped a cloth pad of some sort under each leg. After each leg had a pad under it, they could scoot it around without a great deal of effort. In their current house, the piano is upstairs in the bonus room. Movers put it up there without damaging the house or the piano. Nevertheless, my sister could not stand to watch.

I think you could make it work, but it kind of depends on the size and style of your other furniture.

We would be getting all new furniture, and I figured we could do a sectional that faces the opposite way from this one they currently have in there. My piano is about 5 feet wide by 5’3” long.

A baby grand will be the centerpiece of your room and takes up more visual space than its footprint, alone. It can work. But I doubt that a sectional will work in the space. Perhaps a couch and two or three smaller scale chairs? A sectional will compete in size and scale. Any way you can get a measurement on the room from the realtor, or view the home again to get measurements?

A cautionary tale:

When my brother took up the piano, we located it in the family room. It was a big room, which had once been the formal dining room in this older house when it was built, back in the days when there was no such thing as a "family room." The family room was open to the large living room via an archway that was huge so didn't block sight or sound between the rooms. We watched TV in the family room. All did not go well. My brother (who is now a professional piano player) was obsessed with playing the piano. Our house was one of the few among my friends that had rules of when you could NOT play the piano. He used to sneak it in during commercials but always bled over a bit into show time. Finally, my parents couldn't take it anymore, they turned our one car garage into a family room, converted the old family room back into a formal dining room, and kept the outdoor heavy wooden door between the kitchen and the new family room so that we could go in there and watch TV and close off the constant sound of the piano. The folks had wanted a two car garage anyway, which they then added on to the house. We needed at least one place to go and watch TV away from the piano.

Now maybe you aren't that obsessive about your piano, but I think that a TV watching space and a piano playing space may have conflicts. How often will probably depend on your lifestyle. We were never big on TV in the bedroom, but at my last house I turned the upstairs guest bedroom into a TV room where someone (not saying who but is initials are DH) could go to watch TV (football in particular) without any disturbance. Again, YMMV on this but I was lucky I could do that at my last house. Our current home is "open concept" and it makes it much harder, particularly now with hubs giant screen TV taking up so much real-estate in the family room and it being open to so much of the rest of the house. I now retreat to the master bedroom in the back of the house for quiet, I have an office niche in there . . .

Looks like that space is too small. I think the piano will out to at least the edge of the fireplace, unless you cram it into the corner with the keys facing out, which means when you play your back is to the audience. It will also block the right side of those French doors.

I think it might work…thats a big christmas tree. My piano is smaller like yours. When we built, my builder was able to have them mock up a little piano where mine was going right on the plan because I was afraid it was goint to stick out in the walkway. (It sits in entryway ”L” of staircase) Get all the measurements of the room and draw it to scale. Someone on here should be able to see if it fits. i would put the bench in the corner and the bell facing into the room. If you are in a cold location it might be an issue being so close to an outside wall. Pretty home!
